I have just stayed two nights at the Grand Plaza Hotel. This is my first visit to Toledo and I was there for two nights. I travel for business and pleasure, and I have about 200 hotel stays a year, so I have a lot to compare this hotel against.
The man at the front desk could use some customer service skills. The lobby is very outdated, but it sounds like it has been recently updated, so they should get a refund from their interior designer. I don't understand having to use the keycard in the elevator, especially for lower floors, and you have to run the card about 5 times before you get a green light. The elevator is awful looking and needs some serious updating. Once I got into my room, I noticed how dark and cold it was. I immediately found the thermostat to increase the heat and the panel was barely attached to the wall. The thermostat was at 68 degrees....in winter! I set the thermostate at 75 to get warm quickly, and 36 hours later, it has not gone above 70 degrees. I have seen review after review regarding the HVAC unit, going as far back as 2010, so obviously this hotel does not care to fix this problem. The lighting in the bathroom is minimal and I could barely see to put makeup on....it was just way to dim!
I found the staff to be unfriendly except for the guys at valet. I don't think the hotel was highly occupied, so I was able to get my car quickly each time and they were polite and helpful. The fitness center is one of the worst I've seen. Broken machines, heater blasting, and very poor lighting...why would you keep the fitness center with lounge lighting? Overall, I was extremely disappointed in this hotel and I will never stay here again. I'm not sure why anyone would have been pleased with this hotel...I can only assume they don't stay in hotels very often and therefore have lower standards.
