“Not bad....not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of July as we were doing Cedar Point and were really looking just for a place to sleep that was close to the park and cheap!

Plain and simple – you get what you pay for with this hotel.

The rooms were ok – nothing special. The only thing that bothered us was the damp/moldy smell that hung in the air. We had no problems with the front desk or anything like that as we didn’t have any complaints/issues.
The courtyard is pretty decent with a pool which we didn’t get to use but I did dip my feet in (it closed at 11 p.m. and both nights we did not get in until well after it was closed), but it looked clean and fine.

I was very disappointed with the free continental breakfast which consisted of coffee, juice, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, bananas, donuts, muffins, toast and 2 waffle machines. I thought they would at least have some more variety – i.e. bacon or eggs (a breakfast must). The second day of our stay we decided to go out for breakfast which we will do again if we stay here again in the future.

All in all, if we come back to Cedar Point again, we would probably stay at this hotel again as it was cheap and close and we didn’t have any issues the first time around.

“We lucked out here!”

Came in on a Fri. to go to Cedar Point and didn't have a room reservation. Very busy weekend and had hard time finding accomodations, then found this Days Inn. Boy did we luck out! Got nice rooms for a reasonable price. Plus, the location can't be beat! Just a short way down from the road that leads to Cedar Point. Overall, very happy. Only complaint is continental breakfast only went until 9 am on the weekend too. Didn't realize this and when I went down a little later than that the worker who was breaking down the breakfast was very rude!

Room Tip: Room 249 is a suite that is like an apt. Two bdrms. with king beds, two sleeper sofas, kitchen area...

“Sorry- but this is not the place to go!”

We had a late check in because of how far we had to travel. We also had to leave early the next morning- so no time to ask for customer service.

The room was disgusting! It reeked of mildew and body odor. There was even urine on the toilet seat! It looked and smelled as if someone was in there right before we got there- then left when we checked in- the beds were even rumpled. We have stayed in Days Inn before, but this branch is a bad link in the chain!

“Good place for the price”

It was clean and comfortable, though a little dated. Formerly the Sandusky Inn and Suites, the hotel is well cared for and has a unique charm about it that you don't find in the modern cookie cutter box hotels. Very nice courtyard surrounding the pool.
Staff was friendly and helpful. The surrounding area was a bit run down but not to the point where we felt uncomfortable.
We would stay there again.

“Room was a nightmare and I could not wake up!"”

We stayed at the Days Inn Sandusky OH on 1530 Cleveland Road for three nights from 6/22/11 – 6/25/11. We arrived at the hotel on Wednesday evening and I checked in. It was around 7 pm and the parking lot was almost empty. The hotel botched my reservation and put me in a smoking room. The smoking rooms were in a separate building on the other end of the parking lot from the non-smoking buildings. When I opened up the room door (Room 155) my sister, who was standing in the parking lot, gagged from the smoke smell that wafted out. I’m a non-smoker and I have stayed in smoking rooms before, but this was really bad. I walked to the front desk and asked the hotel clerk if there was any way I could change rooms because the smoke smell in my room was really overpowering. She said “Let me check”. Then she said “Unfortunately, there are no non-smoking rooms available for the last night of your stay”. I said, “Hmm, that’s not good. But two nights is better than none, can you put me in a non-smoking room for the first two nights?” She then said “No, I can’t do that. The system won’t let me change your room”.

Me: “So, you have rooms available, but you won’t put me in one of those?”
Clerk: “No, the system won’t let me do that.”
Me: “I don’t understand. If you have rooms available, why don’t you just put me in one of those rooms for the first two nights?”
Clerk: “No, the system won’t let me do that. Would you like me to contact my manager and check?”
Me: “Yes, please do. I’d really appreciate that.”
So then she told us to take a seat in the lobby. After fifteen minutes, she called us back to the desk and said “No, I’m sorry. But the system won’t allow us to put you into a different room.”
Me: “Really? You can’t give me a key for a different room for the first two nights?”
Clerk: “No. What don’t you understand? They system will not allow me to do that. I can show you.”
Me: “I understand the computer will not let you enter a different room. I do not understand why you can’t just give me a key and put me in a different room for two nights since they are available.”
Clerk: “The system HAS to match the rooms.”
Me: “Why?”
Clerk: “Housekeeping has to know what rooms are being used. The front desk needs to know.”
Me: “Can’t you leave them a note or tell them?”
Clerk: “The system will not allow that.”
My sister: “Can we just put a roll-away bed in our room for him?”
Clerk: “No. The type of room you are in does not accommodate a roll-away bed.”

It was pointless. She was adamantly not going to move me to a different room. There was no way to persuade her.
Me: “Do you at least have something to spray the room with? It’s really bad.”
Clerk: “Yes, I will call maintenance.”

Obviously, I was very irritated with the situation. I still do not understand why she could not put me in a non smoking room for the first two nights since she said rooms were available. However I figured I wouldn’t spend much time in the room, so how bad could it be? I met the facilities man at my room. He was very nice. He sprayed an entire bottle around the room and assured me it would remove the odor. He said he just wanted me to have a great experience at the hotel and if there is anything he can do to please let him know. He was a very nice gentleman and one of the few positives about this hotel. When he was done spraying, the room smelled like lemon pledge and I left to go out for dinner w/my family.

Three hours later we returned and I opened the door to my room. Unfortunately all we could smell was smoke. The spray was temporary at best. My sister asked me to sleep in their room but I assured her I would be fine. Now, if it was just the smoke and the clerk who could not change my room, this would have been an unpleasant but forgettable experience. However, things just continued to go wrong.

In my room, when I took off my sandals, I noticed the carpet felt a little bit damp and tacky. When I stepped between the beds, it was actually downright sticky. I looked at the bottom of my foot and it had something green stuck to it. The carpet itself was red w/green flowers so it was hard to tell, but when I get down closer I see gum or playdough or toothpaste or something. I don’t know what it was. I could also see hairs, what looked like fingernail or toenail clippings, and lots of other detritus. It was gross. I don’t know if they don’t vacuum or just need a better vacuum but the floor was filthy. At that point I was totally disgusted but I knew they wouldn’t change my room because “the system won’t allow it.” I got some toilet paper and folded it up five times and placed it on the sticky spot so I wouldn’t accidently step on it. It stuck to the floor. I got out my iPAD because I was bitter and was going to post a review. The Days Inn site says “Free High Speed Wireless Internet at Property and All Rooms.” There was no wifi in my room, nor in my sister’s room either. (There was a computer in the lobby.) Eventually I fell asleep, trying carefully to touch absolutely as little as possible.

The next morning I woke up to take a shower. As soon as the water hit the shower curtain, the aroma of smoke filled the air. I was so glad I would be getting out of there soon. I took my luggage and stored it in my car because I didn’t want it to get smoky from the room. We stayed at the park until it closed and were back at the Days Inn around 10:30 pm. My family dropped me off at my room, and as I walked up to the door I could see that although it was closed, it was not latched. When I closed my door previously I had noticed that you have to insert the key in order to latch the door from the outside. Evidently someone in my room had not done that. I opened the door and checked. My toiletries and cooler were there. The bed had been made. Luckily nothing was missing. (I’m glad I left my luggage and my electronics in my car.) The toilet paper was missing from the floor where it was stuck, but when I checked, the green gunk was still there. (I’m not sure how the maid removed the toilet paper but left the goo.) I decided to just brush my teeth and go to bed. That’s when I noticed a sweet ant at the sink, and then another, and another. I ended up killing around three dozen sweet ants. After crawling into bed, I found an ant in the bed. This was ridiculous. I called the front desk. I told them my door was open when I returned to my room and that there was an ant infestation. The clerk offered to have maintenance come down and spray my room. It was 11:00 pm. I didn’t want to try to sleep in a room where they had just sprayed bug poison so I say “No, I just wanted to let you know.” There seemed to be little point in asking to be moved to a different room since the clerk the previous evening made it clear that was an impossible request to accommodate.

Friday was similar to Thursday. I got up for breakfast and we left to be at Cedar Point when it opened. We returned to the hotel after the park closed around 10:30 pm. This time the door was latched. The toilet paper was gone (but the green goo remained). The ants were not at the sink. However, when I used the bathroom I realized that the ants had merely changed locations. I killed another dozen in the bathroom. Since I was driving home the next day, I decided to fill up my cooler with ice. When I tried to enter the ice/vending room in my building, my key would not open the lock. So I got ice from the non-smoking building across the parking lot. I went to sleep feeling glad that it was my last night in this wretched hotel. At 5 am Saturday morning, the smoke alarm in my room went off. I jumped out of the bed. It smelled smoky but I didn’t see any smoke, so I removed the battery from the smoke alarm figuring it must be a dead battery. (Seriously? The smoke alarm goes off in a smoking room and I wasn’t smoking. Could there have been a worse hotel?) When I went to check out that morning I was prepared for the clerk to ask if I had a pleasant stay. I was going to politely say “No. It was terrible.” Unfortunately, it was the same clerk who checked me in. She recognized me. She did not ask how my stay was. She knew.

This was the worst hotel room I have ever stayed in. I have to look back and laugh because it was so bad. My sister says her room was neither particularly good nor bad. I overheard a kid in front of me at the breakfast buffet talking on his cell phone and saying that this was the nicest hotel he had ever been in. It IS in an ideal location for visiting Cedar Point. Maybe I just had the worst room in the place, but it was really bad. I still can’t believe they could not and would not move me to a different room since rooms were available. I strongly urge anyone to reconsider before staying at the Days Inn in Sandusky, Ohio at 1530 Cleveland Road. I would never stay there again.

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in Room 155.
