I've stayed in Sandusky countless times and experienced one terrible hotel after another (dirty, bugs, broken TVs, no free breakfast, noisy, etc, etc). It got so bad that for my Cedar Point trips I'd drive 20 miles out of Sandusky just to stay away from its hotels! This year I tried something different by looking into Sandusky again because I didn't want to do the drive. I found this Knights Inn on TripAdvisor and although it had some questionable reviews, I decided to give it a shot.
We initially booked this hotel for 1 night through the Knights Inn website and received a great deal for booking in advance. When we checked in the room was clean and fresh and we had zero problems with the room or the staff, it was exactly what you hoped you would receive when going to a budget hotel...except for the room itself. Although the bedding was the typical outdated 90s floral pattern, the rest of the furnishing were fairly modern (including a flat panel TV). The star of this room however was the king size jetted tub, which was amazing after a long day at the park!
When we decided to stay another night, the hotel staff politely informed us that our current room was booked and we would have to move to another, without the jetted tub. Although this room went for $30 more because we did not book in advance, we were still very pleased. Everything was comfortable and clean and the move from one room to another went very well with zero problems; they even let us check in early so we could go ahead and go to the park without worrying about a room.
Some reviewers noted this hotel was noisy due to the train. Although yes, you can easily hear the train, it was by no means loud and did not disturb my sleep at all, and I'm not a heavy sleeper. If you really think it might be a problem for you, just bring some ear plugs. I also didn't hear any noisy dogs and no part of the hotel smelled like smoke to me, and as I have asthma and am sensitive to smoke, this was a big relief!
The location of this hotel was excellent. Coming off the Cedar Point causeway, it's just a left turn and about a mile down the road - this hotel is literally the last thing before you leave the town. The only downside is that there are very few places to eat and you do have to drive a couple miles if you want something familiar like fast food, but it did not pose a problem for us at all. Breakfast was, in my opinion, beyond what I expected for a budget hotel. It was a typical continental breakfast spread but what got me were the availability of options, including some Nature Valley granola bars and donuts from a local bakery. Every other guest I encountered was very polite. Also, if you bring a dog to this hotel, there's a large grassy area next to the hotel's parking lot.
Overall, all of my future trips to Cedar Point and Sandusky will involve this hotel. I was so glad to finally experience a Sandusky hotel worthy enough to spend my money on and it will be the only hotel I recommend to family and friends who are going to Sandusky. I only hope this hotel will keep up its class act for future visitors, including myself!
Room Tip: Book at least a week in advance!
