Potential Customers Beware!
The confirmation e-mail I received, indicated I had reserved a “3 Double Beds, No Smoking, Free High-Speed Wireless, 27 inch TV, Safe, HBO, Hair Dryer” room. While checking in, the woman assisting me (who also happened to be the general manager) stated that she was putting us in a different room that still had 3 beds and some more privacy. I asked “it’s still non-smoking, right?” and she replied “yes”. Without knowing any better I stated that was fine. She checked us into room 201. After carrying our luggage up the stairs, we enter room 201 to find that it had residual smell of smoke. With two people in my party having very sensitive allergies, it was immediately apparent that this was not a non-smoking room, which had been confirmed in my e-mail and addressed downstairs during check-in. I proceeded back to the counter and informed the manager that the room smelled like smoke and we would need alternative accommodations. She apologized for the inconvenience and moved us to room 2013, at the opposite end of the hotel. When I came to get the rest of my group, they informed me that the window ledges were dirty and there was gum smeared on the shower head in addition to a dirty bathroom and toilet tank cover that did not fit the toilet. We gathered all of our belongings from the room and headed down to room 2013. Walking down the hall, we observed the overall poor condition this hotel is in. There were bugs on the ledge in the hallway, bare plaster was showing throughout the entire hallway system and doors were open that showed cluttered storage rooms throughout the hallways. We entered room 2013 and it had a non-smoking sign on the door and smelled much better than the first room, which had no sign indicating it was a non-smoking room. We sat down our belongings and went to turn on the air conditioning. The air conditioning was not functional in the room. We then discovered that one of the pillows had orange/reddish stains/spots on them that looked like bodily fluids. Upon further investigation, over half of the pillows in the room were disgusting and looked to be stained and not clean. We pulled back the blankets to find the sheets had the same stains on them. The doorframe in the bathroom was also rusty on both the top and sides. Appalled by the state of this room, I proceeded back down to the desk, pillow in-hand. Another member of my party and I arrived at the desk and asked to speak to a manager. The woman who had checked us in and moved us stated she was the manager. We indicated that we were disgusted and disappointed with the pillow/sheet stains in the room. When we showed the manager the pillow case, her eyes got big for a second and her reaction to the stains was similar to ours. She apologized and said that she would send housekeeping up to the room immediately to serve any of our needs. We then asked about the air conditioning unit not being functional. At this time, the manager stated “it doesn’t sound like I will be able to accommodate your needs; I can offer you an immediate checkout at no charge.” We decided that checking-out was our only option because the manager didn’t even offer to get the air conditioning fixed or move us into better rooms. We informed the manager that our party was taking pictures for corporate because we found this hotel to be absolutely disgusting. The manager stated she would go in online and include how she resolved the issue with us by checking us out. While we simply thought she was not willing to work with us, checking us out seemed like a viable option to this manager. We agreed we would check-out and return the keys since she did not present any other options. The manager refunded us the $100 cash and then refunded the remaining balance to the credit card. She gave us the receipt for this, apologized for the inconvenience and we left. When we got back to the room the rest of our party had determined that there were dried up pieces of cereal in the room and that the rooms cleanliness overall was unacceptable. When I went to return the keys to the desk, the manager indicated that she had sent the housekeeping supervisor up immediately and they were addressing the person responsible for that room. The cleaning would cover the issue, but it could not change the fact that in both rooms the wood was badly chipped and gnawed on the furniture and floorboards.
In reviewing my credit card statement, it appears that I was re-charged for the entire room on the day I would have checked out in the amount of $182.86.
I was left outside this hotel with 4 people having to try and find same-day accommodations in another hotel. This inconvenience pushed our schedule for the reception back 2 hours when we finally found alternative lodging and got settled there. I've now been re-charged for accommodations we didn't stay in, and this experience keeps getting worse.
Contacted Choice Hotels corporate who called the hotel, which they specified in their e-mail was privately owned (disassociating themselves), and got my money refunded. Nothing else for the 5 misplaced people, late arrival to the reception because we had to go searching for vacancies elsewhere, and nothing to offset the increased costs we experienced once we found a place to stay.
Room Tip: Smoking and non-smoking are mixed in so you walk through smokey halls to get to some rooms.
