“Could be improved!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

We have stayed at the Comfort Inn quite a few times over the years due to its reasonable rates and location. Most faults were always overlooked. This particular trip I seemed to forget how uncomfortable their beds are!! The double beds are TOO small and have absolutely NO padding on the extra firm mattresses. The comforters are also flimsy. This stay the front desk attendant didn't bother checking that we were staying two nights and when we returned from Cedar Point we were locked out of our room. This also happened two months ago when we stayed here! There's no security since the side doors were always propped open. Last time the side door was broken and wouldn't open at all. Called to report our toilet wasn't working correctly at 8:30am and returned at 3:00pm to find it wasn't fixed!! Very frustrating and inconvenient. Breakfast was good although they need more seating. We had to take our food back to our room because there was absolutely no where to sit. Breakfast good! Wish they would add sausage links. Not everyone likes biscuits with sausage gravy. Bulk ice machines were nice addition. Pools are always nice. Didn't get a chance to use indoor pool this stay. Would stay again!

Room Tip: Try not to stay anywhere near pool entrance. Kids are noisy and like to bang on doors for fun.

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. We take very seriously both the good comments as well as the bad. You'll be interested to know that we've worked diligently with the front desk staff to ensure that they're properly coding keys for the correct number of nights stay and we've worked with our entire staff to improve the security of our exterior entrances. We've also undertaken a massive renovation and refresh project whereby much of the furniture and amenities will be improved. Thank you again for submitting a review. We look forward to your visiting us again in the future!

“Big motel but still makes those personal touches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

The Comfort Inn - Sandusky offers great amenities at a good price. Not to be confused with the other 3 Comfort Inns in the area (Maingate, Huron, Milan) this one sits on the main drag next to the Best Western which they also own. Rooms had been renovated recently & are quite large & were always very clean. They offer an indoor & outdoor pool as well as a sauna & hot tub. Breakfast was great with 3 choices of waffle mixes. Breakfast room is large & always active to accommodate the 300+ rooms. Other hot items were biscuits & gravy as well as an egg patty. Would be nice to see a meat patty that most other Choice Hotels offer for so you could make a breakfast sandwich. Rooms are nicely appointed & very quiet (60 person youth group was staying at the time & you never heard them). Hotel is quite active as it is one of the largest non-waterpark hotels in town (one look down the second floor hallway will confirm you of that). If you are looking for a close, quiet, room at a good price then this is the place to stay but be ready as there are always other guests buzzing around the lobby, in the pool areas or in the breakfast room.

Room Tip: If you have issues with stairs make sure you request a first floor room as this hotel has no elevato...

“If you like red stains, dead bugs, and mis-labeled rooms...”

Potential Customers Beware!

The confirmation e-mail I received, indicated I had reserved a “3 Double Beds, No Smoking, Free High-Speed Wireless, 27 inch TV, Safe, HBO, Hair Dryer” room. While checking in, the woman assisting me (who also happened to be the general manager) stated that she was putting us in a different room that still had 3 beds and some more privacy. I asked “it’s still non-smoking, right?” and she replied “yes”. Without knowing any better I stated that was fine. She checked us into room 201. After carrying our luggage up the stairs, we enter room 201 to find that it had residual smell of smoke. With two people in my party having very sensitive allergies, it was immediately apparent that this was not a non-smoking room, which had been confirmed in my e-mail and addressed downstairs during check-in. I proceeded back to the counter and informed the manager that the room smelled like smoke and we would need alternative accommodations. She apologized for the inconvenience and moved us to room 2013, at the opposite end of the hotel. When I came to get the rest of my group, they informed me that the window ledges were dirty and there was gum smeared on the shower head in addition to a dirty bathroom and toilet tank cover that did not fit the toilet. We gathered all of our belongings from the room and headed down to room 2013. Walking down the hall, we observed the overall poor condition this hotel is in. There were bugs on the ledge in the hallway, bare plaster was showing throughout the entire hallway system and doors were open that showed cluttered storage rooms throughout the hallways. We entered room 2013 and it had a non-smoking sign on the door and smelled much better than the first room, which had no sign indicating it was a non-smoking room. We sat down our belongings and went to turn on the air conditioning. The air conditioning was not functional in the room. We then discovered that one of the pillows had orange/reddish stains/spots on them that looked like bodily fluids. Upon further investigation, over half of the pillows in the room were disgusting and looked to be stained and not clean. We pulled back the blankets to find the sheets had the same stains on them. The doorframe in the bathroom was also rusty on both the top and sides. Appalled by the state of this room, I proceeded back down to the desk, pillow in-hand. Another member of my party and I arrived at the desk and asked to speak to a manager. The woman who had checked us in and moved us stated she was the manager. We indicated that we were disgusted and disappointed with the pillow/sheet stains in the room. When we showed the manager the pillow case, her eyes got big for a second and her reaction to the stains was similar to ours. She apologized and said that she would send housekeeping up to the room immediately to serve any of our needs. We then asked about the air conditioning unit not being functional. At this time, the manager stated “it doesn’t sound like I will be able to accommodate your needs; I can offer you an immediate checkout at no charge.” We decided that checking-out was our only option because the manager didn’t even offer to get the air conditioning fixed or move us into better rooms. We informed the manager that our party was taking pictures for corporate because we found this hotel to be absolutely disgusting. The manager stated she would go in online and include how she resolved the issue with us by checking us out. While we simply thought she was not willing to work with us, checking us out seemed like a viable option to this manager. We agreed we would check-out and return the keys since she did not present any other options. The manager refunded us the $100 cash and then refunded the remaining balance to the credit card. She gave us the receipt for this, apologized for the inconvenience and we left. When we got back to the room the rest of our party had determined that there were dried up pieces of cereal in the room and that the rooms cleanliness overall was unacceptable. When I went to return the keys to the desk, the manager indicated that she had sent the housekeeping supervisor up immediately and they were addressing the person responsible for that room. The cleaning would cover the issue, but it could not change the fact that in both rooms the wood was badly chipped and gnawed on the furniture and floorboards.

In reviewing my credit card statement, it appears that I was re-charged for the entire room on the day I would have checked out in the amount of $182.86.

I was left outside this hotel with 4 people having to try and find same-day accommodations in another hotel. This inconvenience pushed our schedule for the reception back 2 hours when we finally found alternative lodging and got settled there. I've now been re-charged for accommodations we didn't stay in, and this experience keeps getting worse.

Contacted Choice Hotels corporate who called the hotel, which they specified in their e-mail was privately owned (disassociating themselves), and got my money refunded. Nothing else for the 5 misplaced people, late arrival to the reception because we had to go searching for vacancies elsewhere, and nothing to offset the increased costs we experienced once we found a place to stay.

Room Tip: Smoking and non-smoking are mixed in so you walk through smokey halls to get to some rooms.

After me and my family got home from Cedar Point and dinner, we went back to our rooms and got ready for bed! And woke up no more than an half of an hour later to at least five bedbugs in our beds and under the pillows! Very disgusting and dangerous! http://www.medicinenet.com/bed_bugs/page2.htm#hotels

Room Tip: This plcae HAS to be disgusting especially is the bedbugs were visible. I would assume that they all...

We are sorry that your recent experience at our property was less that exceptional. As you are probably aware, all hotel properties deal with the unsavory issue of bed bugs as they are brought in and out of the property by guests. We have a very active system of pest control in place and do everything possible to combat this issue. We hope that you'll treat this experience as isolated and that you'll give us another opportunity to serve you and your family in the future. We're SURE you'll be pleased should you decide to give us a second opportunity!

“Like sleeping on a rock - should be called uncomfort inn!!”

All we wanted was a good night sleep after a long day at Cedar Point, all we got was a back ache and a bill including every tax imaginable. Got quoted $89.00 for the room, ended up paying over $100, the beds are literally box springs, I'm not kidding I checked. Not to mention I called in the morning to confirm the reservation, and when we got there, guess what, no reservation! The only thing decent about the room is that it is clean. I would have much rather saved my $100 and drove the 2 and 1/2 hours back home to sleep in my own comfortable bed!!! NEVER going again!!

Thank you for taking the time to write a response and to comment on the cleanliness of our property. Unfortunately, we live and operate our properties in a tourist destination area which is indicative of the taxes you paid on your stay. As you are aware, we have no control over the tax situation and this money is immediately turned over to the local taxing authorities. You'll be interested to know that we've recently undertaken the project of doing a massive renovation and refresh to our hotel property. Should you choose to try us again in the future, we know that you'll be pleased with the results!
