“Overall, it was pretty nice.”

My family and I stayed at, "America's Best Value Inn," in Mentor Ohio during the first week of August 2011. I was skeptical, because of the negative reviews I've read, but actually it was a pretty enjoyable stay. My room was clean, but a little small. The staff was cordial. I did hear a train whistle during the nights a couple of times, but it seemed in the distance, so it wasn't bothersome. The only thing we didn't like was that early in the mornings we could hear the noises from the next room. It sounded as if someone was opening some kind of desk drawer or something and kept slamming them shut. Same each morning. I don't know if they were purposely trying to wake us or what. The pool was nice and the kids really enjoyed it. We did have some other friends who hadn't reserved a room, but they decided on the spur of the moment to stay, so they got a one, and they said that room smelled a little musty and like someone had been smoking in it, and it was a non-smoking room. So, maybe it would be better to reserve a room for better quality. There is a McDonald's right across the driveway, making it very convenient to have breakfast. I would stay there again, but like I said only if I reserved in advance. Hope this review helps.

“Must read stay far from this dump. I have never wrote an online review but I fell this is a must”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2011 via mobile

I picked this place becuse the sighn out front advertised $24 rooms obviously it was realy $50 on a Tue night. This is not my complaint. I checked in found my room walked in and beds were not even made. I am not a picky person but when you walk into a room with beer cans and dirty beds that is bad. Even this would not push me to write an online review what happened next is unbelievable. I waited patently in the loby as he checked in two other groups I wanted to tell them don't do it but did not. When I finally got to the counter I told him the room was dirty and I would like a refund to go some were else. He looked at my recipt and told me I had the room for 25min and he could not refund me. I said what are you talking about he said I probably took a girl in the room and now I am done. I have not been so mad in my life. It took me blocking the counter and screaming at him to cobalt get my money. Checked into red roof in $18 more but two thumbs up

“Deceptive rate sign, dirty room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 March 2011

Stayed at the Americas Best Value Inn in Mentor, OH two nights ago. Want to report on my experience there. First of all, the large sign on the outside stated 'Starting at $24.99.' Since I was staying alone for the night, I figured a small cheap room would be perfect, and a bargain at $24.99. The desk clerk quickly pointed out that $24.99 is a single day if you stay for a week! The actual rate for one night was $39.99! Right away, I am feeling duped by a misleading cheap rate switch played on me. Right away any guest coming in has a bad feeling of being cheated. This is a deceptive business practice that should be discouraged or disallowed by any hotel.
Then he starts a lengthy check-in process where he is typing into a computer my address, phone, drivers license number, etc. Is all this really necessary? It took 10-15 minutes for this nonsense!

The room was a nice size, but it had obvious dog doo stains on the carpet, and the room reeked of cigarettes. Better clean-up would have made for a more pleasant stay.

At check-out the added taxes added up to a $44.09 final bill. I suppose that is an OK rate, but it would feel better if the actual rate was posted on the sign outside that invites you in for $24.99.

I am posting this review, so others will not be victim to this hotel's false rate advertising.

Thanks and hope Americas Best Value Inns change things.

“Pleasantly surprised!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2010

We stayed here while seeing the Historic Kirtland Center & Kirtland Temple. The reviews almost scared me off, but the place is apparently under new ownership. The room looked re-done, was very clean, nice bedding, no smells. It is located right off I-90, behind a McDonald's and next to a gas station, am/pm store, and a Subway. It has a nice pool. We experienced no noise. We took a morning walk in the residential neighborhood. It's not in a resort area by a long shot, but is a good no-frills place for highway travelers!

“Not a bad place to stay. It's Cleveland.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

I assume you're not expecting the Sandals Resort experience in the Cleveland area. If you are, check out the "Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Video" on YouTube for a reality check.

I stayed here as it was convenient to the historical sites in Kirtland. It is a very short drive there, although not walking distance for the average person. I wouldn't call it the BEST area in the world, but it wasn't unsafe. When I was checking in, there was a dubious-looking man trying to book a room and a lady of the night waiting outside for him. Or so it appeared. Moments after checking in and driving to his room, several police cars immediately swarmed the premises and escorted the gentleman away. NOT the hotel's fault, but yes, it's the kind of joint where people may be bringing their hooker.

I found the man at check-in to be friendly and accommodating. The many tattoos were a put-off to the family checking in behind me, but hey, it's the book and not the cover... He was more than willing to go out of his way for everyone as far as I saw. The room is not what you would want to see on your honeymoon, but the bed is supportive, the sheets were clean, I actually felt safe leaving thousands of dollars worth of electronics in my car (I was moving across the country). In the morning, everything was there. Shower worked, although the bathroom was tiny. Towels clean. It was 40 bucks... you can't complain.

If you're going to Kirtland and are on a tight budget, I would recommend the place. If your business is in Cleveland, it may be a little far out to be convenient. I was only there one night but I feel comfortable saying don't be put off by the negative reviews--if you want a cheap roof over your head, clean sheets, and service that doesn't bite your head off just for trying to give them money, you'll find it.
