“Beautiful Location - pity about the hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

LOCATION: In the heart of Freycinet National park, a couple of kms from the Wineglass Bay trail and super close to a beautiful beach.
ATMOSPHERE: 70s dated lodge that seems to be more apt to an old skiing resort.
MENU - FOOD AND WINE: proper restaurant serves good food - highest prices I have seen in Oz
SERVICE: friendly
PRICE: This place is shocking expensive for what it is
HIGHLIGHTS: Location
DISAPPOINTMENTS: Dated decor, our cabin was exceedingly basic
YOU WILL LOVE IT IF: You have money to waste and want to stay in the heart of the National park
YOU MIGHT HATE IT: you are expecting a delightful lodge hotel

Room Tip: Ask NOT to be put in cabin # 1.

“Beautiful location, but overpriced”

As others have stated on Trip Advisor, the location of the lodge is second to none. Pristine water views from the main building and surrounded by wilderness. Be aware that to stay here you also require a National Parks pass - for two nights the cost was $48.00. The Freycinet cabin, to our dismay, had a view of nothing but trees and the paths leading to other cabins. This is only a minor thing as we did not spend a lot of time in the cabin. The cabin itself was very comfortable, once we were able to figure out the air conditioning. Dining can be very expensive in the restaurant and even the "cheaper" option of the Tavern was not that much cheaper. We thought we would see if the pub in Coles Bay was cheaper, but even a burger option there was $25.00. And alcohol prices were a little high too! Not sure I would stay here again, I would probably look to book something with self-catering facilities and bring our own food/drinks.

“Great views”

Found the cabins very basic. Ate at the restaurant, wasn’t very impressed. Waste of money – service was very slow and the restaurant wasn’t even at full capacity. The tavern was much better, in terms of service and food. Breathtaking views but not much to do – an enjoyable short stay but I wouldn’t stay more than 2 nights.

“3 star service for 5 star prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

The location of this accommodation is fantastic. The cabin we stayed in was also amazing, recently refurbished and I really dont think you could want for more in a room. The jacuzzi bathtub was huge and so was the bathroom. Clearly they have spent a lot of money on the room itself and both myself and my wife were very impressed with the room.

Unfortunately that is where the good things finish. When you are paying over $430AUD+ per night for a room (same rate as 5 star hotels in Sydney) you expect a little customer service from the staff (well we do at least). But there is none to be found at this hotel. Sure the staff are friendly in a Youth Hostel kind of way, but do not expect anything like what you should get for these prices.

An example of this was when we booked a cruise on Wineglass bay (AMAZING BTW), only to show up at 8.30 am at the allocated time and date only to be told that the cruise was cancelled and a message had been left with hotel staff the day before. So I went back to the hotel and asked if there were any messages for our room and the guy at the desk looked in his rolodex and then his computer and said "no". So I pointed out that a message had been left but it had not been passed on and he apologised briefly but said they didnt typically take messages for guests!! Now this kind of annoyed me because it states that they will do messages in their information pack in the room, plus I figure for these prices they could take the odd message, especially when it would save a guest getting up early and driving to a cruise that had been cancelled. So I made it clear that I wasnt impressed that we hadnt been informed about it and left it at that. Then on checkout we mentioned it again to a different guy at checkout and he said he had personally checked with the person who took the message and that that person had tried to deliver the message to the room but because our do not disturb sign was on she couldnt deliver it. I asked "Couldnt she have put the message under the door?" and he said yes she should have dont that but "sorry" she didnt.

We also ate at both the restaurant and the bistro and neither were very good on the nights we went. When the waiter asked us in the restaurant how our starters were we both said "Ok", but I guess he could tell we werent impressed so he pressed us further and so my wife explained that the mussels she had had were a bit dry. Well this seem to shock the man that anyone would criticise their mussels because "they sell 100kg of mussels per day and everyone loves them". That may be true, but my wife is Belgian and a bit of a mussel expert and if she says they were not great then I believe her, but he didnt. So instead of taking the customers' word for it the staff just ignored us for the rest of the evening. The main courses were better than the starters and we would have said this if asked, but from that point on nobody spoke to us. We werent trying to get any money off the bill or anything, just giving our honest opinion about the average quality of the meal at above average prices.

As others have mentioned here, the décor of the main lodge is truly stuck in the 80s. The restaurant is very tired and dated, and the bistro is actually quite hideous inside. Cheap plastic tables and old chairs.

So overall we were left pretty disappointed by the Lodge. You just cant charge these sort of prices if you are going to five a level of service that is very much "cheap and cheerful", even if your rooms are good and your location amazing...

“Private and cosy setting all year round”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

I would say this place was overpriced but nevertheless delightful accom, with wooden flooring, secluded balcony, very homely and personal-quite unlike all other 5 star accom I have stayed in.Breakfast was oustanding, along with service. No TV by the way, which is fine and no signal for most of the time.It came in at 0230.Surrouned by wildlife, which comes awake at night, much to the kids delight.
The walk from the carpark to wineglass Bay is wonderful and easygoing.Take water.

Room Tip: 42 was very nice
