“Beautiful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We stayed here for one night enroute to Strahan. We stayed in a recently renovated spa suite. The semi-detached cabin is very rustic on the outside and was located at the end of a small road with 2 other cabins. It was large inside with an enormous bed and crisp white sheets. There is a small sink/kitchenette area. We had little canapes, cookies and port available. There is a leather sofa in front of a fire you can choose to light. A glass door opens onto a balcony which looks straight out on to bush and a small stream. The bathroom is large with a corner spa and large shower area. Fluffy white towels and robes are provided. After dinner the bed had been turned down, heavy drapes closed and a scented oil candle had been lit in the bathroom.
Once you park there is no need to drive in the lodge area. There is a free guest laundry. We ate in the general eating area and it was OK. Breakfast was served in the restaurant area and was a buffet - very disappointing. The eggs had been sitting for some time and all of the pastries were mass produced and not warm. No pancakes!!
Would recommend the walks in the lodge area. The Enchanted Walk with a guide was really worthwhile. We saw pademelons, wallabies, a wombat and a blue wren. No platypus to be seen. Heard kookaburras.
This was the most expensive night on our holiday. The room and location was great but the food was disappointing. Yes, it's very remote and a long way to bring everything in but nothing compared with the quality of food available on the top of glacier ski areas in Austria.

Room Tip: The spa suite with the little extras was very nice.

“Overpriced hotel with worn out rooms.”

There is one thing that is indisputably good about the hotel: the location. It is located right next to the entrance to the Cradle Mountain National Park. You can get to Lake Dove and Cradle Mountain in 20 mins. What leaves a lot to be desired about this hotel is the conditions of the rooms. I know this is supposed to be a country lodge and the rooms are not supposed to be as luxurious and refined as those you find in a 5-star hotel in a city. But for what you pay, which is a lot, the rooms were simply not up to standard. My room was quite worn out and worse, looked nothing like they did in the photos. I chose this hotel despite its costs because I thought the rooms looked great in the photos. I was disappointed.

I was also disappointed by the service. The checkout time for this hotel was 10am, which I was told was standard in Australia, but certainly not so in the rest of the world I have traveled to. When I asked for a later checkout, I was told flat out no. Other hotels in Australia have accommodated me. So my request was clearly not unreasonable by local standard. I was quite surprised by the staff's curt response.

In short, if your prime concern is location and you are not too concerned about room conditions and costs, this hotel is fine. Otherwise, I would think twice about booking here. And the photos are certainly misleading.

“Great place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time. Stayed in a KIng Billy Suit, great suite with balcony hot-tub etc etc. Great service and great food as well with good wine selection and knowledgeable staff. Plenty to do, hiking, fishing etc. Went to the Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary - well worth it! A great place to spend a few days in the nature, recommended!

“Rest in the wilderness”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We enjoyed this lodge, nestled in the woods. There are several cabins here, and the view from ours was great: of a mature forest, complete with wallabies hopping by. The cabin itself was fully appointed, with full bathroom, and standard amenities. The buffet breakfast in the lodge, included in the price, was good. We also enjoyed the walking trail, which started only a few feet from our cabin door. There were several trails emanating from the lodge, and our only regret was that we didn't have time to explore them all. The staff were very helpful, helping us book a last-minute visit to the next-door Tasmanian Devil Centre.

“Location has the wow factor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We had 2 nights at CML in a contemporary spa cabin. The cabin was exactly as promised on the website with everything needed for a short stay in such a great location. There is no Wifi in the cabins but this is available (at a cost) in some of the public rooms.
We had dinner in the Highland restaurant both nights. The service was friendly and the food satisfactory given the location. It is not fine dining nor were the meals some of the best in Tasmania (as stated on their website.) There was a reasonable choice on the breakfast buffet and the quality of the food was ok.
For us CML was all about the scenery and wildlife which did not disappoint both within the grounds of the lodge and at Dove Lake. The Nocturnal tour was great as was our close encounter with a possum on the way back to our cabin.
