We stayed for one night recently and were really looking forward to the weekend based upon how the hotel advertises itself as the 'best kept secret in Pulborough'. Our room was old, dingy and tacky with a very uncomfortable bed. We came down in the morning for breakfast and had to walk through a freezing sitting room. Very unwelcoming to say the least! A roaring fire in the sitting room fireplace on a cold December morning would have been nice. We ate dinner in the dining room the evening before. The food was good but there was a very distinct smell of damp in the restaurant which may the dining experience unpleasant. It was a very disappointing stay.
Having stayed at The Chequers earlier this year we were eager to renew our acquaintance with this lovely hotel. It is so full of old-fashion charm we regard it as a "gem" in the heart of Sussex countryside.
We were so lucky to get our favourite room, number 2, which is so full of character. The ensuite was immaculate so top marks to the cleaning staff. The bedroom also was spotless. So no cause for complaint there.
We took all of our meals in the hotel restaurant as there is no reason to seek food elsewhere. Why? Because the chef is excellent. Peter introduced himself to us when checking if our food was ok. He gave us some history of his culinary experiences which all adds to the enjoyment of the meal.
Taking our morning coffee (they have an expresso macine!!) in the delightlful gardens was an added pleasure.
We understand that the hotel is currently for sale so lets hope that the new owners keep up the current excellent standards.
One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Warm and friendly service, very clean and comfortable rooms, great food and lovely garden. All set in a typical English village with beautiful views. I will definitely stay there again.
I have relocated for business to the area and have been resident monday to Friday most weeks from February to the end of June.
I have found Pete and Jen to be excellent hosts who are complimented by very helpful staff.
The rooms are clean fresh and welcoming, the menu is limited but varied with a good selection of fresh veg. More importantly Both Pete and Jen are happy to develop the eating experience. On reflection 56 meals eaten and all enjoyed.
I am happy to recommend collegues to stay or just visit for a well cooked, well presented meal
