“Good breakfasts but can be noisey and not very clean!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

I have stayed in this hotel on business several times in many different rooms. In most rooms the noise from the road just outside is unbearable. Then you have the constant banging of the fire doors, stomping on the timber stairs.

On some visits especially late arrivals it was difficult to get a parking space.
Cleanliness is a problem, especially in the bathrooms. Hair and worse found on the floor! Cobwebs seem to be being collected too!

One good point is the breakfast. All you can eat, great choice and quite good quality.
the staff are also very polite but then most of them are not English.

Verdict, you can do MUCH BETTER for the money!

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms near the fire doors. They bang all night long

Dear Sir,

I would first of all like to thank you for your review on Trip Advisor on the 3rd February 2012.

I was very disappointed to read that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I have spoken with all the reception team it would seem you did not make your feelings known to us at the time of your stay.

As you had not made your complaint to the hotel direct, I do not know what room you stayed in or when you stayed with us. I have done a full audit of all bedrooms and bathrooms and had a meeting with all housekeeping staff to raise your points.

I am glad to read that you enjoyed your breakfast and found my team to be polite and friendly, however was a little surprised to read that you think most of my staff are non English, as in the month of January I employed 49 staff and of which 3 are non English.

I would like to point out that we have over 1,000 people stay at the hotel per month and our reviews via Best Western and other agents are very good. I take your comments on board and my team will work even harder to improve our amenities to our guests.

Please feel free to contact me direct on the below telephone number or email.

Kind regards

Matthew Milliken

“Terrible nights sleep”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Tiny, single room for the same price as a double. The bed was so lumpy I ended up sleeping on the floor for most of the night - which is hard with a single duvet and little space between the bed and desk chair. I'm only 5'3" and my feet were touching the unit at the end of the bed! Shower was tiny, as was the rest of the bathroom. Furniture and decor need updating, although the room was clean. The room was too hot (couldn't get to the radiator controls) but opening the window let in too much noise from the busy road and planes. Breakfast was OK, although waiting staff took an age to acknowledge our arrival.
It appears I am not the only person who did not enjoy room 210!!

Room Tip: Aviod room 210!

“The Perfect Party room for Verne Troyer, Warwick Davis, Ewoks, Wee man and Bridget the Midget.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

The Birch Hotel offers you a once in a life time opportunity to relive you child hood.
If you want to remember what it is like to sleep in a bed made for a ten year old.
To be able to turn over the large TV at the end of your bed with your toes and the chance to soak in a shower so compact it evokes the memories of being a three year old bathing in the kitchen sink then room 210 is the room for you. You don't only get all this, oh no, you also get the soothing sound of the ambient trance like drum and base from the bathroom extractor fan and if you are on a health kick and looking to lose weight, the room double's up as a Sauna not only in dimensions, but with not one but two radiators which at no added expence were very kindly left on all night. So if you have driven miles whilst away from your family on business a fantastic value price of £79 is all you need to stay at 'The Birch Hotel'.

Room Tip: For all the above, ask for room 210.

Dear Sir,
I would first of all like to thank you for your review on Trip Adviser on the 17th January 2012.

I was very disappointed to read that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I have had a look at our records and we have not had any complaints from guests in sometime, after speaking with all reception team it would seem you did not make your feelings known to us at the time of your stay.

As you did not make your complaint to the hotel direct, I am sorry that you did not give us the opportunity to recertify the problems you have spoke about in your review. I have been to look at room 210 and as you booked a standard single room, the bed is a standard single as to which you would expect following your booking requirements. We do offer double rooms for single occupancy if you had wished to have a larger bed.

I would also like to mention that the bathroom in 210 will be getting fully refurbished in June 2012 as part of an ongoing program.

The one radiator in the bedroom is fully adjustable manually, so guests can select what temperature they would like. With regards to the fan in the bathroom, I do agree with you that it is noisy and I will have maintenance change it ASAP.

I would like to point out that we have over 1,000 people stay at the hotel per month and our reviews via Best Western and other agents are very good. I take your comments on board and my team will work even harder to improve our amenities to our guests.

“Lovely day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

My brother held his wedding here, the food was excellent and the day went without a hitch, everyone had a lovely time. The staff were accommodating and friendly. The room was clean and airy and I had the best nights sleep in a long, long time!!

My only gripe is that check out was still 11am on a Sunday...none of us went to bed until 2am, so this was a slight shock to the system to have to be out so early! I know that it can take time to clean rooms (I've been a housekeeper in a hotel), but maybe, it is worth extending the check-out time for wedding guests as we felt a little rushed after such a lovely day,.

“Good value for money - free WiFi.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

Stayed 1 night for business purposes. 15 mins. from Gatwick Airport. My overall impression is good.

Room
Clean and tidy with a comfortable bed. WiFi at the Birch is complimentary, easy to hook up and works like a charm throughout the hotel both on laptop computer and phone. This is a major benefit when you travel for business from abroad and phone expenses quickly run high.

Staff
All members of staff were friendly and made me feel welcome.

Food
We had supper in the bar area, food was not alright. But why are the starters served at the same time as the mains? Breakfast was excellent.

At the rate paid, I'd visit again if in the same area.
