“Horrible, horrible place. To be avoided at all costs. Do not be fooled by the brochures and the pictures online!”

My daughter (aged 14) and I arrived at Butlins on the 22 August 2011. I had booked ‘silver accommodation’ having been assured by the Butlin's representative telephonically that we could expect a neat and clean room with pretty gardens.I had looked at the photographs online and the silver accommodation seemed adequate and quite attractive. What an unpleasant surprise we got! Firstly, having queued to book in (queuing being a common trait at Butlins), we were unceremoniously directed to our room. I might add that I have stayed in many hotels both in Europe and in Africa and I have never seen anything quite as dismal and cheerless as this room. Not only that, the room was filthy, there was no door on the wardrobe cupboard (which was dirty inside, full of dust and debris) and a few sad wire hangers on display. The beds reminded me of something similar to a prison, the carpets and walls were stained – quite unbelievable. Even the complimentary tea/coffee/sugar bowl was unclean with human hairs in the bottom of the bowl. Quite disgusting. My heart sank but the look on my daughter’s face was the worst part of all. We had been so excited and had carefully saved for this little break and to be so horrifically disappointed. As for the gardens, my goodness, cigarette butts everywhere, dirty windows and doors, what an utter disgrace. We were both so depressed that we just decided to eat, watch some TV (on a tv that is possibly older than my daughter, with a really poor quality picture hanging precariously in the corner of the room) and just go to bed. We had decided to go home the next day. The following day we decided to look around and I convinced my daughter that we should at least stay for one show. I may add that despite telephonic assurance that the ‘Red Coats’ would make sure my daughter would have fun, they were rarely to be seen and all the daily shows and entertainment seemed to concentrate on younger children. That is fine but I should have been told about this failure to cater for teenagers, despite what is set out in the brochures. We watched a show that evening and decided to leave the next day. However, during breakfast it occurred to me that I should at least complain and I went to guest services and complained to ‘John’ who was very kind and understanding and who promised to upgrade us. I must say that at that stage we were not even feeling positive about an upgrade as we figured that it would be just as bad. However,we were transferred to the Ocean Hotel which was a revelation and although we did not really leave our room for the next two days, the remainder of our holiday was spent in clean surroundings. However, despite the upgrade, I still feel almost violated and most definitely ‘ripped off’. There is no doubt in my mind that the online pictures and brochures are a complete misrepresentation. For the two days I spent in that disgusting room I feel I should be refunded in full. To make matters worse, we decided to leave very early on the Friday morning i.e. about 8.00 am as we had a long journey back. Despite the booking form clearly stating that breakfast started at 8.00 am, there was a different notice on the door of the restaurant stating that breakfast started at 8.30 am so we missed breakfast. I have communicated my disgust to Butlins who 'in a nutshell' feel that by upgrading us, for the remaining 2 days of our holiday they have 'done enough'. A complete and utter waste of time and money. I feel it my duty to warn others about this place. Just plain awful.

.

Room Tip: Don't even bother.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your stay at our Bognor Regis resort.

I was really very sorry to read your comments about your accommodation and that you didn’t enjoy your time with us. The fact that you were left feeling so disappointed is entirely unacceptable and this certainly isn’t the impression we want any guest to have when they arrive – I’m sorry we got things so wrong for you.

I wanted to take this opportunity to address some of your concerns.

Our accommodation and facilities are thoroughly cleaned before every break and since your stay we’ve also refurbished our silver apartments in Oyster Bay and they all now have new bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms. I’m confident that if you came back you wouldn’t experience the same problems. But this doesn’t address the fact that things weren’t perfect for you, so if you don’t feel things were dealt with satisfactorily whilst you were away you’re welcome to email me at Butlins.socmed@bourne-leisure.co.uk with the details of anything you feel needs further investigation.

It’s a shame your daughter wasn’t able to find a show to see during the day, but there really is plenty for teenagers to do on resort in the daytime. There’s Splash Waterworld, beach sports, archery, fencing, the funfair, football and our VIP club with sessions like silent disco, go karting, Wii and Xbox challenges and bowling. I hope that if you come back and see us again your daughter might be able to make more of what’s on offer for her age group.

I’ve passed all your comments to the relevant departments so they can be addressed. Once again I’m sorry your Butlins experience wasn’t a good one, but thank you very much for letting us know what went wrong and providing us with the opportunity to make things better for future guests.

I do hope you’ll decide to come back and see us so we can show you how good a Butlins break can and should be.

Kind regards,

Katie

“Christmas Fantasy weekend”

This is the third year in a row that we've stayed at the Ocean Hotel (dinner included) for the Christmas Fantasy Weekend. The first two years were great but this year was a MASSIVE disappointment. Every corner seems to have been cut. The visit to Father Christmas was dismal compared to last year. The children no longer get a present to unwrap - just chocolate. The food was poor quality compared to before. The pantomine was the same as last years but a lot less funny - very very disappointing. There was hardly any entertainment on the Sunday. I could go on moaning but I'm sure Butlins know where they've made the cutbacks. We pay alot of money every year but will not be doing it any more. It's the children I feel sorry for.

Room Tip: The Ocean Hotel is very nice, very clean & the staff are very helpful.

“mixed feelings”

we went on a sun holiday £9.50 upgraded to silver. I would advise you to do so if your budget allows . If you are disabled the place is quite unhelpful, the parking etc is not convenient unless you manage to book one of the very few disabled places with parking at extortionate prices. The shows were all very lovely and worthwhile, people queueing up to 2 hours and we wondered why, to get good seating of course which would be all gone by the time you got in,it was like a mad dash.. quite scary .it would also be nice if Butlins could arrange disabled seating areas for wheelchairs.
The food and the drink was expensive, ie a squash at the bar £1.40 - thats right cordial with tap water... the reps were all smiley and cheery, ready to help- but if you asked a question you went right out of their comfort zone, question left unaswered -asking them to ask management was met with a blank stare. On the plus side there were a lot of friendly customers who has been there before and were able to supply the answers the butlins staff couldn't.
the accomodation was far from any parking, airport trolleys are provided which you push with difficulty, again not disabled friendly at all. But the staff offered to help when you could find one. The apartment we were in had a kitchen, living room/diner , 2 bedrooms, shower/toilet. very warm, heaters in each room. kitchen appeared clean but all the dishes and glasses were filthy, encrusted with dirt. welcome pack of tea towel, sponge, liquid and tea/coffee, uht milk provided, excellent as you needed to wash those cups before using, bleach would have been most welcome to soak them for 5 mins. hard to manage a wheelchair over the door frame bump, a person will need help.
the rooms were surface clean, dirt , old hairbands on top of cupboards, under beds etc..
No carpet clean or dustpan or mop provided.
the swimming pool was big and lots of fun, lots of slides etc .. lots of staff lifeguards .. changing rooms were not so nice, perhaps matting would be nice as it was slippy and soaking wet with so many customers, or more mopping with disinfectant to get rid of the smell.
Please don't get me wrong, all in all we enjoyed it , but it was expensive
If I had paid full price I would have been upset. we stayed in the Oyster Bay complex. N or P I think. The entertainment offered was varied and too much to chose from, we had fun and would go again if it was a bargain break, I certainly wouldn't pay full whack. I am just saying what I observed.

“Weekend away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Having booked a 90's weekend at Butlins I was a bit apprehensive on the quality and what I had let myself in for.
I needn't have had any concerns, admittedly I did pay for an upgrade to the meals and accommodation, as on arrival I was swiftly and pleasantly guided to my chalet. What a surprise, everything was clean and, OK a little shabby, but very comfortable. I do have one gripe, the tea making facilities were downstairs but the only tap and sink were upstairs.
After unpacking my wife and I did the grand tour. The place was buzzing and everyone was having fun. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I wasn't overwhelmed by the plastic glasses but can see why they are used.
Now for the food.
An excellent choice for breakfast, Continental, full English or even both and all served fresh and the English was piping hot. The evening meal was not a dissapointment either. Once again plenty of choice, it's rather difficult when you have the option of Roast beef carved for you with all of the trimmings, or crispy battered fish and chips, or pork stroganoff just to name a few. And to top it off, a superb range of hot and cold deserts.
The evenings entertainment was of a good standard too. I think I came away a stone heavier than when I went.
I just have one small comment, the entertainment during the day was virtually non existent, having said that, it was a great break and we will be going again soon but this time as a party.

Room Tip: If you are just going to party then basic is fine but it is worth upgrading
