My daughter (aged 14) and I arrived at Butlins on the 22 August 2011. I had booked ‘silver accommodation’ having been assured by the Butlin's representative telephonically that we could expect a neat and clean room with pretty gardens.I had looked at the photographs online and the silver accommodation seemed adequate and quite attractive. What an unpleasant surprise we got! Firstly, having queued to book in (queuing being a common trait at Butlins), we were unceremoniously directed to our room. I might add that I have stayed in many hotels both in Europe and in Africa and I have never seen anything quite as dismal and cheerless as this room. Not only that, the room was filthy, there was no door on the wardrobe cupboard (which was dirty inside, full of dust and debris) and a few sad wire hangers on display. The beds reminded me of something similar to a prison, the carpets and walls were stained – quite unbelievable. Even the complimentary tea/coffee/sugar bowl was unclean with human hairs in the bottom of the bowl. Quite disgusting. My heart sank but the look on my daughter’s face was the worst part of all. We had been so excited and had carefully saved for this little break and to be so horrifically disappointed. As for the gardens, my goodness, cigarette butts everywhere, dirty windows and doors, what an utter disgrace. We were both so depressed that we just decided to eat, watch some TV (on a tv that is possibly older than my daughter, with a really poor quality picture hanging precariously in the corner of the room) and just go to bed. We had decided to go home the next day. The following day we decided to look around and I convinced my daughter that we should at least stay for one show. I may add that despite telephonic assurance that the ‘Red Coats’ would make sure my daughter would have fun, they were rarely to be seen and all the daily shows and entertainment seemed to concentrate on younger children. That is fine but I should have been told about this failure to cater for teenagers, despite what is set out in the brochures. We watched a show that evening and decided to leave the next day. However, during breakfast it occurred to me that I should at least complain and I went to guest services and complained to ‘John’ who was very kind and understanding and who promised to upgrade us. I must say that at that stage we were not even feeling positive about an upgrade as we figured that it would be just as bad. However,we were transferred to the Ocean Hotel which was a revelation and although we did not really leave our room for the next two days, the remainder of our holiday was spent in clean surroundings. However, despite the upgrade, I still feel almost violated and most definitely ‘ripped off’. There is no doubt in my mind that the online pictures and brochures are a complete misrepresentation. For the two days I spent in that disgusting room I feel I should be refunded in full. To make matters worse, we decided to leave very early on the Friday morning i.e. about 8.00 am as we had a long journey back. Despite the booking form clearly stating that breakfast started at 8.00 am, there was a different notice on the door of the restaurant stating that breakfast started at 8.30 am so we missed breakfast. I have communicated my disgust to Butlins who 'in a nutshell' feel that by upgrading us, for the remaining 2 days of our holiday they have 'done enough'. A complete and utter waste of time and money. I feel it my duty to warn others about this place. Just plain awful.
