“Incredibly unhelpful staff and dated rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Apologies for the lateness of this review as I stayed here last August. I was so disappointed with the staff at The Copthorne and unfortunately it really marred our stay. I wanted to take my Mum away after a bout of illness and when I researched the hotel and noticed the Executive suites I rang the hotel to ask about the layout and if we might be better off sharing a suite rather than having 2 separate rooms. The lady completely misinformed me so when we arrived and stated we would prefer 2 rooms instead, I was surprised that the extra charge was going to be equivalent to the cost of another suite, how does that work out? 2 standard rooms for what would end up costing the same as 2 suites? We decided to stay put in the suite. I've noticed their website still claims the Executive suites have a separate bedroom and lounge, they do not, there are 2 "areas" but no door in between.

The next morning we went to the "Club Lounge" for the breakfast that was included in our stay. The room is virtually a shoebox with a sofa and a desk area and absolutely stunk of cigarettes. There was a half eaten pastry amongst a couple of other mini pastries. I went downstairs to inform them of the problem and request if we could eat either in our room or the restaurant. I was informed that this was not an option unless we wanted to pay for another breakfast otherwise we should go back up to the lounge. I understand a guest smoking somewhere they shouldn't isn't the hotels fault but also why should we be expected to eat in a tiny room stinking of smoke? I really didn't think it was a big deal for the hotel to organise a coffee and a couple of pastries for us to eat in another location but as the front desk were not prepared to budge we went out for breakfast. On returning to the hotel and letting the manager know how unhappy I was we were told we could eat in the restaurant tomorrow as if that was some kind of enormous favour to us even though we had 2 mornings of breakfast included anyway and had just paid to eat elsewhere. The staff here have a lot to learn about how to treat their guests and it's unfortunate that the manager couldn't apologise and offer the restaurant breakfast without making us feel that we were the problem. Also on our last night we couldn't get a parking spot for some time as there was a wedding going on which was a real pain after a long day out.

Dear Guest

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience from August '11. I was disappointed to read that you had left without us being able to resolve any issues you had experienced.

Since your visit I can confirm that the breakfast offer has been reviewed and is now taken in the main restaurant as a continental offer. This certainly ensures that we are able to present a consistent offer.

Without knowing the date you stayed or your personal details it is impossible for me to comment at this time regarding the difference in rate between two suites and two standard rooms. Please feel free to contact me directly to review this further - matt.ward@millenniumhotels.co.uk

Thank you once agian for sharing your experience and I hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back soon.

Yours sincerely

“Great location shame anywhere above ground floor feels like a time warp!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Surprised to see the standard of rating this hotel gets - can only assume the suites are much better than the basic rooms. As I walked into reception I thought it looked good and more modern than colleagues had given it credit for but alas entering my 1st floor room I was quite surprised by the old fashioned (not a look they were trying to achieve - everything was just old and tired) decor and furniture. The heat hit me - truly tropical so I switched the radiator off and opened a window - it still remained warm. I was above the leisure facilities so think that may have kept the heat up. The sink area in the bathroom was good but the shower was rubbish - like a jet of water. Was shocked to see in this day and age it had a shower curtain and personally I just don't like them. Bath was complete with 2 black marks - needed replacing. To be fair though the bed was comfy and the room was actually clean.
The noise from the gym could be heard but to be honest the hours that I could hear it it didn't bother me. The pool was good and the staff courteous just a shame about the actual accommodation! Breakfast was always really good - best scrambled eggs I've eaten in a hotel!!
It's in a great location in Dudley as Merryhill shopping center across the road (6 mins walk) - loads of shops and a decent food court.
Shame about the rooms - could be a good hotel if it was refurbished - would be happy to pay more if it was!

Room Tip: Don't take 108 - I should have asked to move so partially my own fault.
