“great budget guest house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

myself and my partner stayed the night in this guest house.we had been travelling allnight from norfolk so all we wanted to do was go to sleep so when arriving at annies they made our room up and let us in straightaway.when we got in the room it was lovely and basic and very clean.they even gave us the family room even thou there was two of us!the owners made us feel very welcome and because we was on a quiet road we had a very good nights sleep!the best bit of the stay was the breakfast!if i was ever to go back to south shields then i would stay here again!

“Great Digs....”

Stayed in Annie's for nearly 5 weeks whilst studying at South Tyneside College as the Halls of Residence was full of Cadets! :-(

During this time I couldn't fault it. My room was cleaned every day, the shared bathroom and toilets were in great condition and when I had time to eat breakfast it was excellent. It was possible to get a weeks laundry done on the same day for about £5 or £6 which was one less thing I had to worry about while I was at the college. My wife joined me at various times during my studies and Linda was very helpful at letting me chop and change rooms to accomodate this.

My only complaint would be noise as it was a terraced property but so is nearly every other guest house in Shields and it was certainly a lot less hectic than some of the other places on Ocean Road, which can be a bit loud on the weekends (though it a great place for a curry!)

On the whole though Annie's was exactly what I needed for my time in Shields and would definitely stay again if I return to the town in the future.

“Contrary to the opinions expressed in other reviews I won't be back.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

After reading the reviews on tripadvisor I was confident about booking this guest house. Upon arrival the owner's daughter was very chatty and welcoming - offering me a map of the town and asking if I had any special requests such as soya milk etc. In terms of the effort of the owners in making you feel welcome it can't be faulted. Also, in the room there was a large flat screen television, free wifi, a hairdryer and iron. However, I had concerns about the cleanliness of the establishment which meant I opted not to have breakfast there.

When I arrived late at night I was asked to fill in my details in the dining room and whilst doing so noted that there crumbs on the set table and that the mats etc were shabby. It all looked a bit worn out and dirty. When I went up to my room the first pillow I lay on smelled of sweat. The internal bathroom was fine and with a good Mira shower but the door kept springing open and wouldn't remain closed. Walls are paper thin so you can hear conversations in other rooms. The Guest House advertises that it has memory foam mattresses - this may well be the case but I suspect it perhaps has cheap memory foam toppers as my bed felt nothing like my own memory foam bed (in terms of support). That said, the bed was not uncomfortable - apart from the fact I had concerns about how clean the bedding was.

Early in the morning I decided not to have breakfast in the Guest House but to walk into South Shields. Walking down the stairs, the smell of fat emanating from the kitchen turned my stomach. When I returned from being out (at about 9.25am), someone had been in my room and opened the windows. I then felt like I couldn't use the toilet before checking out in case someone came into my room again whilst I was in the toilet with the door wide open.

The owners were friendly and helpful, and the rooms were well equipped however, I had serious reservations about the cleanliness of this guest house and left for a business meeting smelling of stale fat. Needless to say I won't be back and wouldn't recommend it. You would be better paying £20 extra to stay in Newcastle.

Room Tip: I wouldn't stay here again!
