After reading the reviews on tripadvisor I was confident about booking this guest house. Upon arrival the owner's daughter was very chatty and welcoming - offering me a map of the town and asking if I had any special requests such as soya milk etc. In terms of the effort of the owners in making you feel welcome it can't be faulted. Also, in the room there was a large flat screen television, free wifi, a hairdryer and iron. However, I had concerns about the cleanliness of the establishment which meant I opted not to have breakfast there.
When I arrived late at night I was asked to fill in my details in the dining room and whilst doing so noted that there crumbs on the set table and that the mats etc were shabby. It all looked a bit worn out and dirty. When I went up to my room the first pillow I lay on smelled of sweat. The internal bathroom was fine and with a good Mira shower but the door kept springing open and wouldn't remain closed. Walls are paper thin so you can hear conversations in other rooms. The Guest House advertises that it has memory foam mattresses - this may well be the case but I suspect it perhaps has cheap memory foam toppers as my bed felt nothing like my own memory foam bed (in terms of support). That said, the bed was not uncomfortable - apart from the fact I had concerns about how clean the bedding was.
Early in the morning I decided not to have breakfast in the Guest House but to walk into South Shields. Walking down the stairs, the smell of fat emanating from the kitchen turned my stomach. When I returned from being out (at about 9.25am), someone had been in my room and opened the windows. I then felt like I couldn't use the toilet before checking out in case someone came into my room again whilst I was in the toilet with the door wide open.
The owners were friendly and helpful, and the rooms were well equipped however, I had serious reservations about the cleanliness of this guest house and left for a business meeting smelling of stale fat. Needless to say I won't be back and wouldn't recommend it. You would be better paying £20 extra to stay in Newcastle.
Room Tip: I wouldn't stay here again!
