“Friendly Welcome - easy access & good parking - Food Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

The Bridge House has recently changed hands & we had just a sunday lunch, as its a convenient place for us to meet. The location off the M23 is very easy to find plus parking is good. The main reception has been nicely made over & now is very welcoming. The staff are very attentive & friendly. The menu was al-cart (no set option) with a good selection (6 starters & deserts plus about 12 main options. The food varied in price from about £12-20 for main & typical 3 course being circa £30.
The quantity of food was genorous and the quality, while being delivered with finesse, was a bit bland (I maybe wrong but food sort of seemed packet assembled rather than fresh made). Also for a Sunday there was not sunday lunch (roast dinner) option.
The staff were very friendly & accomodating plus service was swift & food delivered quickly.
The dining area was tidy & everything clean & hygenic.
Only slight dining area consmetic issue was we found our table all ready for us - but there were lots of other scattered funiture in the dining area which made the room look cluttered & generally untidy.
So, if you are looking for a not to expensive meal with easy access from M23 without having to pay excessivley - then this is a good pace.
I score as average because I feel food could be better for price.

“Busy hotel, hard working staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

My wife and I stayed at the Bridge House Hotel for two nights in December. This was our second visit to the hotel, having stayed there a year earlier.

On the first occasion we had been lucky to be booked into a spacious bedroom which was well decorated and clean. This year we stayed in a similarly furnished, but smaller room. Both the bedroom and particularly the en suite are looking tired and in need of some refurbishment..

On the positive side this busy hotel 'churns' customers and visiting parties at this time of year, apparently effortlessly. Staff are very hard working, polite and efficient.

Breakfasts invlude a selection of cereals, fruits and yoghurts etc and a full English. The meal is supervised by a charming and often comic member of staff who is clearly competent and pulling all the strings around him to satisfy guests' demands.

If the room had been fresher I would have happily marker this hotel as either good or excellent - as the staff certainly are.

Room Tip: Ask before accepting a room whether it has been redecorated since the hotel was completely refurbish...

Thank you for your review and so sorry that after just a few years after we totally refurbished the Bridge House Hotel, you feel this very busy hotel needs freshening again.......some measure of how busy we have been and we will look into this.

Your comments about the team are most kind and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Bridge House Hotel soon.

Kind regards

“The most disgusting Hotel that I have ever stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

A lingering smell (similar to stale air freshener)
A small attic room with sloping ceilings which my husband constantly bumped his head on
Dirty skirting boards, Carpet and mould on the bathroom ceiling
No bath, tiny shower room, the water from the shower drained so slowly that we almost flooded the room, I think this was to ensure that you don't spend too much time in it
Towels as thin as tea towels and grey from over washing, I wouldn't use on my dog
No toiletries apart from liquid soap fixed to the wall
A balcony which we couldn’t go out on as we were told it was dangerous
Heating not working and took 30 mins of negotiation to eventually fix it
Noisy heating unit
Loud music up until 1 am, when we complained we were simply told it will go off at 1 am
A door onto the balcony which was locked, disgusting mould and grim on the patio and fencing

Room Tip: Yes, Go down the hill to the Best Western

Thank you for your review and I am so sorry you were disappointed with the hotel.

The entire hotel was refurbished a few years ago and new air conditioning was installed which also provides the heating, although we do have stand alone electric heaters for those who prefer this.

The rooms vary in size and this is reflected in our pricing and to a large extent is governed by demand and I am sorry that it appears you stayed in one o the smaller rooms toward the back of the hotel although I am surprised you were disturbed by noise in this bedroom.

Our linen comes from a large laundry company and we have passed your comments on to them, and we moved across to large containers of quality soaps and gels in our bathrooms several years ago due to requests from our guests and as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to get away from the small disposible toiletries. Yours is the first adverse comment we have recieved and I am sorry you were not happy with this.

I take your comments onvboard although I am disappointed and slightly surprised by them as the vast majority of comments we recieve on Trip Advisor are very complimentary.

Balconies at one time [before we took over the Bridge House Hotel] must have seemed a great idea, but as I am sure you will appreciate, health and safety and litigation has changed dramatically over the past few years and as such we have to keep some balcony doors locked.

So sorry we werent the hotel you expected, and I do hope you will give us a second chance and perhaps on that occassion you could contact Linda Darbon the GM to ensure you recieve one of our larger rooms and get the sort of stay more normally associated with the Bridge House Hotel, Reigate. Kind regards

David

Thank you for your reply but rather perplexed at the pretty good ratings you gave us and your comments about small bar lounge reception area. We certainluy dont purport to be a country house hotel with acres of lounges and the public areas are i fact pretty generous for the size of hotel. Dont really undersatand the room being described as "basic" as all bedrooms and bathrooms were fully refurbished a few years ago and have flatscreen TVs with movies, high speed internet access, air conditioning etc.

Apologies over cold toast and I am confident this would have been replaced immediately should you have asked, and "tinned peaches" were amongst a range of items on the breakfast buffet and are increduibly popular......perhaps some of us remembering whistfully back to our youth.

Sorry you werent happy but thank you for the ratings.

Kindest regards

David

“Would not stay here again if you pay me!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

I booked a room here about 2 months ago as this is the venue for friends' wedding. The "special function" price was £87 for 2 people room & breakfast; with no choice of rooms (however, we were able to request a non-smoking room). I did not receive a confirmation number or email; the receptionist/reservationist simply said "that's booked". When we arrived the reservation was in order so far so good....

I did feel cheated though as the room rate on the website is £50 per room only and breakfast per person is £11 so altogether we should have been charged £72 for room and breakfast. You would think that the hotel would honestly offer a special rate as they would be guaranteed full occupancy instead of ripping guests off!

There was a horrid smell in the corridors, not sure from what or where but it persisted throughout the time we were there.

The room was a good size, functional but reminded me of a Premier Inn with what can only be described as a clothes rack in the main bedroom. Where the rack was positioned, it meant the door could not be closed - not a very smart move by their designers! There was an area that could have been used as a closet but the door had been removed and it was used to hold an iron and ironing board. The bathroom was spacious.

We were early for the wedding so we decided to get a coffee in the bar/reception area. When my husband asked the waiter, his reply was "go over there I'm out of here" indicating us to go to reception to place our order. There was a nice looking coffee machine behind the bar but what arrived was horrid, instant coffee that had been put into a cafetiere - SO disappointing. We would normally have returned it but it was getting busy at reception and there was no one behind the bar.

The wedding breakfast was a buffet which looked delicious. I say looked because we were one of the last tables to go up and I was lucky enough to get a little salad (bearing in mind there were still a couple of tables worth of guests behind me) and half a piece of ham. I heard someone speak to the restaurant supervisor and her answer absolutely astounded me - "the food went much quicker than we thought, the chef is just preparing some now". For 120 guests, the buffet had not be replenished once the entire time, how did they think it would cater for so many guests. We felt so bad for our hosts as the queue had formed whilst guests waited for the chef to prepare the food! If the hotel is going to be tight on the catering then they should have had staff helping guests to the food and also to keep an eye and alert the kitchen ahead of time. This was extremely poor management. If the hotel cannot cope with catering for this large number then they shouldn't have contracted this event.

The hotel did seem to redeem themselves by the evening function and provided plenty of food.

The following morning, I decided to have a bath but without my specs on it wasn't until I got into the bath that I saw on the side of the bath were several hairs (from areas below the waist) and neither my husband nor I had used the bath! I couldn't get out of the bath fast enough.

I agree with a previous reviewer regarding the breakfast - cheap sliced bread served cold, very greasy cooked full English breakfast, absolutely disgusting coffee (cheap instant) that I had to ask for a cappuccino even though I don’t usually drink milk but I knew they had the nice coffee machine behind the bar and it was the only way I was going to get any decent coffee.

All in all, the wedding was fabulous - the bride & groom so in love and looked beautiful but I will never come near this hotel again.

Thank you for your review and sorry you were disappointed. The Bridge House Hotel, in common with other industries uses a best available rate which means that, particularly for weddings where it is important to try to accommodate as many guests as possible a rate is set for the event. During the time this rate is in operation, it is honoured, despite the fact that the rate to other guests may rise. From the description you give you recieved one of the large rooms and the lower rate available on the internet would be subject to availability and almost certainly for a smaller room.

Buffets are notoriously difficult to "guestimate" in terms of quantity to provide and whilst there is a "rule of thumb" that is used ie previous experience, every so often more is eaten than originally planned so the hotel has to act quickly to provide more food. I am pleased the hotel responded to this challenge and that you were told the real reason and not fobbed off. Conversely is loads of food is left over on the buffet the question may be raised as to why are we paying for food that no one wants? You also mention that the hotel further reacted to this situation by providing ample food for the evening.

Linda Darbon, the General Manager has raised the housekeeping matter with the team and I am sorry.

Breakfast is generally well recieved and I am sorry it wasnt to your liking, apologies.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write a review.

Kind regards

David
