“A shame... Could be something so much better.”

I booked a deluxe room on a Saturday at this hotel on the day of arrival as a last-minute overnight treat with my girlfriend. Getting to the hotel was very easy and in a very good location. Hotel looked great from the outside and the grounds were equally impressive. It's a shame that as you come up the hotel drive the welcome sign directs you straight to the car park at the back of the hotel so you don't get that initial wow you might expect driving up a long lane with a stunning hotel in front of you. What was also off putting was a big metal container in the car park by the health club that looked like a base for a make-shift carwash centre run by eastern-european immigrants. Very strange...

However, we arrived through the reception and greetly warmly. They offered to take our bags upstairs which was good and the whole process of checking in easy and efficient.

The room was very nice, decorated well... Large bed, massive tv and nice amount of space in the room to breakdance in. Small problem was that there was a cot in the room but this was taken away by staff not long after reporting the problem. Something good to note was that the reception desk called our phone around 5 minutes after we arrived to check everything was ok with our room, which was a nice touch. Sometimes it's simple things like this that make a lot of difference...

We unpacked our stuff, wandered down to reception and booked a table for dinner that evening in the restaurant.

The restaurant was ok, but not great... And very expensive for what was offered. We arrived in the bar area around 15 minutes early to our table time, sat and ordered 2 large glasses of wine. There was no background music played out in the bar area and it was quite obvious the people sitting around the tables felt awkward making conversation as anything said could easily be heard by anyone. It was more like sitting in a library than a bar. This unfortunately was the same when we sat and dined... No music whatsoever and a room filled with lots of people whispering to each other. We felt there was little intimacy and with loads of kids running around freely the restaurant massively lacked that romantic spark you'd expect.

What was very strange as well was that we was told to order from the menu in the bar area before we had even sat down at our dinner table.

The menu had around 5/6 choices for starter, main and dessert, priced at 47 pounds per head. This isn't terrible but my girlfriend is a vegetarian and would have expected a lower price for her meal as a risotto isn't going to cost the same as a sirloin of beef. We didn't want a starter when dining and was told this was ok, however no price was pointed out as to what this would be per head. I would have much preferred a menu with individual pricing on food rather than a lump sum for the lot.

The food was ok but nothing really to write home about... Wine was overpriced as expected and the final bill (a main, dessert, bottle of pinot and 2 large glassed of pinot) around £150 which didn't include service. I've had meals in London michelin star restaurants for less and without the circus of kids running around. Quite disappointing. Couldn't really fault the staff though... Seemed mostly fun, attentive, young... except they possibly could have had a word with the people dining with the rebellious kids.

Anyway, back to the room after dinner. Managed to fall asleep around midnight no problems... Woken up at 3am with the worlds loudest baby in the room next to us who didn't stop crying all night. I know this isn't the fault of the hotel but perhaps they could allocate families with babies to a certain area of the hotel, rather than allow them to stay just anywhere. The walls must have been paper thin as well... Literally sounded like the kid was in the room with us. I managed to film the noise from our room with a camera phone it was that bad. It was one of those unfortunate situations where you're undressed and unpacked so moving room would have been a massive hassle...

With the previous experience of the kids running around the hotel I wouldn't recommed this hotel for a romantic / relaxing trip at all. Just one for larger families I guess who are used to being kept up all night.

We brought up our grievance with the receptionist upon checkout who offered £100 off our bill but still, that only brought the total down to £300 which is still in fairness a lot for a night in a hotel which you don't get sleep in.

We left feeling pretty shattered and not feeling any value in our stay, even with the money off. A terrible shame.

Ps. The spa isn't built into the hotel... It's a seperate building to the back of the hotel. We didn't visit so can't comment on the facilities.

Room Tip: Ask for a room when arriving away from people with children. I would imagine the reception should kn...

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write a review on Trip Advisor. I am sorry that you felt misled by the signage on the main drive as it clearly directs you to the front of the hotel for reception and the left fork is directed to our Health Club and Spa as well as wedding and conference guests. We operate a car wash facility for members of our private health club; this is a local business based in Redhill and your comments about the ethnicity of the people working there is unfortunate.

I was disappointed to read your comments both about the ambience of the bar and restaurant as they are not comments that are replicated elsewhere, and about the fact that you felt your girlfriends meal should be cheaper because it didn’t contain meat. Clearly the raw ingredients of a dish, which in the case of vegetarian food that is organic is not necessarily lower, are only a part of the cost of preparing and serving a dish and our pricing is based upon the whole fine dining experience.

There were no children dining in Cloisters that evening and I am sorry that one little boy who was attending a wedding was not prevented from entering the restaurant and disturbing you.

I was surprised about your comments about allocating part of the hotel to families. In general we have very few children stay with us and it is regrettable that you were disturbed by a child that was ill in an adjacent room. As soon as you told us of this problem, we did offer to move you to another room which you declined. When you then raised the issue upon checkout we discounted your accommodation bill by £100.

Yours sincerely

“Stunning Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We spent a weekend here, arriving late Saturday, we used the spa (sauna, steam, jacuzzi, swimming pool) - all good but was expecting area to be bigger. Our room was an Executive Room (No. 42) bed was good size but was an uncomfortable night's sleep with a slight dip which we didn't expect from 'new' bedrooms only refurbished a few years ago. Also the bathroom was tiny. The ceiling above the shower was so low as it was angled and you had to climb into the bath carefully through the small gap between the screen and the wall, so it felt very cramped. We were top floor so maybe the other bedrooms that aren't in the roof are bigger. The furnishings were all very modern and we had an enormous TV and a spectacular view of the beautiful field landscape. We had a lovely dinner, food was slightly nouveau cuisine, so portions were delicious but small. So we had enough room for dessert which is always good! We had a drink in the bar which was very quiet (maybe because it was January) although we didn't get to actually eat in the stunning Cloisters restaurant because they were fully booked, so maybe people went to bed early. I was really disappointed not to eat in the Cloisters restaurant because the tables are candle lit and run along the windows overlooking the scenic view, we were taken to another room which was abit more old fashioned and seemed like an 'overflow' restaurant. The Bar area probably needed some low music or something to add abit of nicer atmosphere. In the morning we used the spa for facial and massage, both were lovely. All in all a lovely weekend, with a couple of small gripes.

Room Tip: Make sure you are booked into room with a view.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post a review; it is much appreciated. I was particularly pleased to read your comments about dinner and that you were able to enjoy one of our fabulous desserts but I was a little disappointed that you felt the Gibson was an ‘overflow’ restaurant. In fact it was the original, oak-panelled dining room of the Fielden family when the house was first built in 1872 and because of its architectural history, we have not changed much of the room at all except our course, it would have had one huge oak table in the centre of the room in those days.
Thank you for your feedback about the bed in room 42; it has now been replaced. When the house was re-modelled into a hotel, it was decided not to change any of the original features and room 42 is in what would have been the servant’s quarters, which had smaller windows and mansard roofs but which we feel add a unique character to the room. Perhaps on your next visit request a room on one of the lower floors to enjoy one of the original family rooms?

Yours sincerely

“Nice afternoon tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I brought my family for afternoon tea to celebrate my mum's birthday. We were made to feel very welcome and the setting for the afternoon was lovely.

The cakes, scones and sandwiches were all delicious and the price was very reasonable. Once all the food and drink had been served the staff seemed to disappear and there were no attempts to ask if we needed further drinks until we left the room in search of someone so we did feel it would be nicer if the staff stayed closer by. To their merit they were very apologetic and they were happy for us to take our time. I will definitely be back.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write a review on Trip Advisor about Afternoon Tea at Nutfield Priory; it is much appreciated.

I am sorry that you felt that the waiting staff did not remain close by; we feel that Afternoon Tea is a serious business and that guests like to be left to take their time and enjoy it with their friends so we try to be as unobtrusive as possible.

I do hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back very soon.

“you have to do this!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I arrived at this hotel last weekend thinking i was being treated to a spa weekend for my birthday with my daughter, imagine my surprise at seeing my whole family there!
AT 4pm we were taken into the gibson room for afternoon tea, i was surprised again to find we were there for a murder mystery weekend, im never stuck for words but this time i was gobsmacked!!! wonderful cream tea while the actors did their thing, they were also absolutely brilliant, i love this sort of thing anyway, but they were great, they involved us all the way, even tho i got it wrong and blamed the wrong person!!!
i have stayed here before for a spa, which isnt the greatest, but the hotel is gorgeous, the rooms are luxorious and the staff very welcoming.
Dinner that evening was fantastic while we mingled with the other sleuths, and the gibson room is ideal for it.
Breakfast was lovely, again, we had ours in the gibson room as part of the sleuthing, views are to die for, all my family had a wonderful time.
Roll on the next one im hooked!!! many thanks to the wonderful actors who gave us all a good time.

“amazing dinning experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We went to this hotel saturday in november last year with close friends as they recommended the food as a new chef has arrived, what can i say Me and Her dine out alot and stay in 4 & 5 Star hotels due to work commitments so are used to high standards, and to be honest have never been here before.
The meal we had quite frankly blew us away, from little pre starters to amazing freshly made bread rolls, the ham, butter poached chicken and foie gras terrine simply melted in your mouth and made you wanting for more, i had the 28 day aged fillet and quiet frankly have never had such a tender piece of beef and cooked to perfection, the better half had a seabass, mussel dish with chorizo mash which looked amazing and she informed us tasted likewise, the triple cooked chips we ordered as a side were the best chips any of us have ever tasted along with a scattering of we were informed red wine dried seasalt- mind blowing!, the Matre D, Peter i believe his name was made us feel like royalty and informed us he had worked with the Chef before and he had just been working for Heston!, and the beef was 'waterbathed' - wow - well from this visit we will all be recommending the food and service and definately be returning, keep it up simply stunning.

Thank you for writing your review on Trip advisor. I was so pleased to read your comments about Cloisters restaurant and I am delighted you enjoyed the new menu devised by our Executive Chef Roger Gadsden and that Peter Binder did what he always does in delivering a ‘wow’ dining experience.

I do hope that we will be able to welcome you back soon.
