“Tea 'delight' spa day. Really?”
I booked with my mother to go for the 'afternoon tea delight' spa day to celebrate my birthday. Normally I would have researched a bit more (and boy do I wish I had done) but having lived in the area and knowing the prestige of Selsdon Park Hotel I didn't. It seems that this once opulent venue has suffered some in the past few years.
We arrived and could see no signs to point us in the direction of the spa so we to main reception to ask. There, all we found was a cleaner pushing a cart of dirty laundry across the hallway who seemed anxious not to make eye contact. Eventually, a receptionist come out to help us from the back office and explained how to get there. The entrance to he spa is so very unassuming that we walked right past. Someone from behind the spa reception greeted us and asked us to fill in a registration form - without a clipboard. When I asked what time afternoon tea was, she said she didn't know as she was a therapist not a receptionist but that our treatments would finish at 3.45 so we could have tea at 4. When I asked if there was anywhere we might be able to get a sandwich at lunch time (we had arrived at 10.15), she was confused and said she would have to ask but that she could give us tea, coffee and biscuits! We were given robes and slippers but the robes were old and could have done with replacing.
We were shown to the changing rooms - a tiny, filthy room with a wooden bench backing onto a bank of rusty lockers. The showers we mouldy cubicles with old white shower curtains and there was nowhere other than the toilets to change privately if you wanted to. The pool area was grubby and dated. It probably might have been a bit flash when it was first decked out but I suspect this was about 20 years ago. The pool side furniture was the cheap, plastic variety you would expect at a low budget holiday camp and the cushions we frayed and stained. Coffee was served in paper cups and was instant. I understand health and safety might state that no breakables should be allowed by the pool but I have been to other spa venues and this has not been a problem. The pool itself was again, grubby. There was a 'tide line' where the tiles seemed unclean. The perspecs roof was tainted brown and there was staining to the over head pipes. I understand this happens over time but for heavens sake, you are trying to run a spa facility here - people expect clean and well maintained facilities.
We were told that the jaqcuzzi was upstairs but was broken so was out of use, I'm not sure we would have ventured up there anyway we were so disappointed with the venue. It was so awful and uninspiring that we decided to leave - we didn't want to return for the treatments as they were in fact booked an hour apart. For a spa day for 2, I find that really wierd!
We spoke to a manager and she seemed shocked by our disappointed of the surroundings and assured us that people really do like to spend 4 hours sitting around their pool. Really? I can't see that, maybe they did once, when it was new and nice. The photos on the website show the pool area looking clean, smart and bright when in reality they are dingy, dull and grubby. To try to make us change our minds, the manager showed us to the 'relaxation room' which is where people go to relax before/after treatments. This room I admit was nicely decked out but was tiny, dark and a little claustrophobic. Also, none of the read meant for relaxing (pool, relaxation room, changing room) have any sort of background ambience music.
All in all and having now looked at the comments on Tripadvisor, I can't see how this spa can ever hope to survive (and I suspect the hotel will fall along with it) unless there is a MAJOR overhaul and rethink of its management and decor. It is a beautiful building with lovely grounds but without any substance or proper service and professionality, how can it possibly hope to compete the the numerous other fantastic spa hotels in the nearby areas? What a pity such a prestigious hotel has fallen to such lows.

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to write your review.
I am disappointed to read that the Leisure Club was not to the standard expected. Please be assured that your comments have been passed to the Leisure Club Manager and Spa Treatment employees to addressed the issues you kindly highlighted. I have also requested that the receptionist on duty is identified and further training is ongoing to ensure that the high standards of service we strive for are delivered to every guest.
It was frustrating on investigating your concerns that you did not stay for the treatments booked and that this has been addressed directly by the hotel . I am confident that had you done so you would have been able to experience the high standards of service typically provided throughout Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club.
I would however like to thank you for your valued feedback, which does enable me to monitor the standard of services we provide.
