“Never ever, worse experience ever!”

I booked 7 rooms at the hotel, however on our arrival they told us that they didn't have our booking. It was when I produced my booking reference number, they reluctanly gave us 7 rooms in the basement and trying to get us to stay somewhere else on the second night.

Our rooms were on the basement floor. It was so hot inside that you could not possibly breath unless you open the windows. The windows were opened onto a back yard where they keep their bins! As well as hygiene issues there was a big concern with security. However we had no choice because the hotel was full and we didn't want to be cooked to death.

We went to the bar where they served us drinks in chipped glasses! A member of staff was dragging a bin bag across the reception with fluide leaking out from within!

To top everything else we woke up in the morning and stepped onto a cockroach. Further along the room we found cockroach number 2. Real Bad!

As you could imagine we were so angry at this point and we asked to speak with the manager who was equally was rubbish as the hotel. We ended up complaining to the general manager who's pa eventually refunding our money for the one room.

Trust me, you don't want to stay there. Look at the pictures that we took, it's no joke!

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to write your review.
After some four months since your visit to Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club, it was very frustrating to read the concerns you have raised regarding the the heat in the room, operational procedures and service.
It is therefore difficult to investigate your clairms at this point as fact however, I can confirm that as a hotel we regularly have independant audits and inspections by outside parties, the last being only carried out during the 2nd week of February and there is no evidence whatsoever that we have an pest control issues.
I apologise if you feel that your original complaint regarding the heating issues, your room and services throughtout the hotel were not dealt with as you would have wished, but do believe our PA felt our explanations and response at the time had been to your satisfaction and was therfore somewhat shocked to read the issues you have raised at this time.
Once again thank you for your feedback which does allow me to monitor our services although I am sure if your issues were addressed as per our operating standards at the time, the necessary improvements have been made.

“A lovely suprise.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

After reading the reviews of this hotel I was a bit nervous about our stay. We were orginally coming for one night for a dinner dance that was being held in the hotel but decided to treat ourselves and stay for two. The room was clean although slightly small but was very comfortable, the only complaint was that the toilet took a long time to fill and the extractor was very loud.
We had drinks in the lounge before dinner and because of a problem in the kitchen were given complimentary drinks because we agreed to wait an extra 30 mins for dinner ( no big problem to us.) Dinner was delighful and very reasonably priced (£27 for 3 courses).
The staff were very polite and helpful. Breakfast was delicious with a lovely wide range of fruits and yoghurts avaliable. Considering the amount of people staying in the hotel that weekend (there were alot of events being held) the food was delicious.
The gym and pool are lovely although considering it was snowing the pool temp could have been higher.
All in all it was a delightful stay.

Room Tip: Ask for an exectuive room as they overlook the gardens of the hotel.

“Tea 'delight' spa day. Really?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I booked with my mother to go for the 'afternoon tea delight' spa day to celebrate my birthday. Normally I would have researched a bit more (and boy do I wish I had done) but having lived in the area and knowing the prestige of Selsdon Park Hotel I didn't. It seems that this once opulent venue has suffered some in the past few years.

We arrived and could see no signs to point us in the direction of the spa so we to main reception to ask. There, all we found was a cleaner pushing a cart of dirty laundry across the hallway who seemed anxious not to make eye contact. Eventually, a receptionist come out to help us from the back office and explained how to get there. The entrance to he spa is so very unassuming that we walked right past. Someone from behind the spa reception greeted us and asked us to fill in a registration form - without a clipboard. When I asked what time afternoon tea was, she said she didn't know as she was a therapist not a receptionist but that our treatments would finish at 3.45 so we could have tea at 4. When I asked if there was anywhere we might be able to get a sandwich at lunch time (we had arrived at 10.15), she was confused and said she would have to ask but that she could give us tea, coffee and biscuits! We were given robes and slippers but the robes were old and could have done with replacing.

We were shown to the changing rooms - a tiny, filthy room with a wooden bench backing onto a bank of rusty lockers. The showers we mouldy cubicles with old white shower curtains and there was nowhere other than the toilets to change privately if you wanted to. The pool area was grubby and dated. It probably might have been a bit flash when it was first decked out but I suspect this was about 20 years ago. The pool side furniture was the cheap, plastic variety you would expect at a low budget holiday camp and the cushions we frayed and stained. Coffee was served in paper cups and was instant. I understand health and safety might state that no breakables should be allowed by the pool but I have been to other spa venues and this has not been a problem. The pool itself was again, grubby. There was a 'tide line' where the tiles seemed unclean. The perspecs roof was tainted brown and there was staining to the over head pipes. I understand this happens over time but for heavens sake, you are trying to run a spa facility here - people expect clean and well maintained facilities.

We were told that the jaqcuzzi was upstairs but was broken so was out of use, I'm not sure we would have ventured up there anyway we were so disappointed with the venue. It was so awful and uninspiring that we decided to leave - we didn't want to return for the treatments as they were in fact booked an hour apart. For a spa day for 2, I find that really wierd!

We spoke to a manager and she seemed shocked by our disappointed of the surroundings and assured us that people really do like to spend 4 hours sitting around their pool. Really? I can't see that, maybe they did once, when it was new and nice. The photos on the website show the pool area looking clean, smart and bright when in reality they are dingy, dull and grubby. To try to make us change our minds, the manager showed us to the 'relaxation room' which is where people go to relax before/after treatments. This room I admit was nicely decked out but was tiny, dark and a little claustrophobic. Also, none of the read meant for relaxing (pool, relaxation room, changing room) have any sort of background ambience music.

All in all and having now looked at the comments on Tripadvisor, I can't see how this spa can ever hope to survive (and I suspect the hotel will fall along with it) unless there is a MAJOR overhaul and rethink of its management and decor. It is a beautiful building with lovely grounds but without any substance or proper service and professionality, how can it possibly hope to compete the the numerous other fantastic spa hotels in the nearby areas? What a pity such a prestigious hotel has fallen to such lows.

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to write your review.
I am disappointed to read that the Leisure Club was not to the standard expected. Please be assured that your comments have been passed to the Leisure Club Manager and Spa Treatment employees to addressed the issues you kindly highlighted. I have also requested that the receptionist on duty is identified and further training is ongoing to ensure that the high standards of service we strive for are delivered to every guest.
It was frustrating on investigating your concerns that you did not stay for the treatments booked and that this has been addressed directly by the hotel . I am confident that had you done so you would have been able to experience the high standards of service typically provided throughout Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club.
I would however like to thank you for your valued feedback, which does enable me to monitor the standard of services we provide.

“Lovely stay”

The room was impeccably clean w/ nice linens and a very comfortable bed. Loved the bathroom, too, with a great soaking tub. The room was, as others have mentioned, quite warm at night, so make sure to pop-open your window. We found the breakfast to be delicious and the table service was excellent. The front desk staff were also very professional, welcoming and ready to meet our needs (e.g., when the public "office" area was closed for the evening they helped us to check-in to our flight on the front-desk computer). And the building and surrounding gardens were just beautiful!

“Pleasently Suprised”

Booked this hotel for 1 night and instantly regretted it when I looked at the reviews. However I was very happy with the hotel and the building itself is stunning. Room was clean, some of the furniture looked dated and carpet could do with being replaced but I often find rooms like this in period hotels. Definately would stay here again.
