This is a strange hotel with an unintended retro feel. Apparently first built in 1982 and if there is such a thing, it maintains its 80s charm. Although refurbished in 2002 and 2008, The decor, style, food and service are all throw backs to the 80s and 90s. The over the top use of shiny brass and tasteless chandeliers all give this hotel a dated feel. The hotel's web site decribes this as a "modern" hotel and whilst its not a Victorian or Edwardian building, modern it is not. To be fair though, it is dated rather than shabby and everything is in good order and not falling to pieces.
Perhaps where things go wrong the most is in the restaurant where the food is straight out of your 1980s cookbook. The cold buffet in particular is reminiscent of buffets of 20 years ago. For example, the "lobster" version of crab sticks, boiled eggs with an unidentified mousse piped on and cold meats. The buffet is muddled with desserts mixed in with soup and hot main courses and when it gets busy with a conference crowd, the queues are long and tedious. The quality of the food is not what it should be. It is was the same two days in a row and lacked flavour and if you have to wait its not worth it. The breakfast is much better and whilst still a buffet, the quality is the appropriate standard.
The bar is a little more charming although expensive. However on the day of my visit was hopelessly understaffed. I think they were also managing resaturant drinks. After 1/2 an hour of waiting, I gave up on my beer. Other guests were more vocal and angrily demanding the service improve; I actually felt sorry for the staff.
On the basics it is clean. I did not experience the smoke smell some report and the room was well cleaned and large. On site parking was good. I didn't try the leisure facilities.
This is one of those hotels that gets its 4 stars because on paper it has the facilities. It does not however, feel luxurious. It is well kept, clean, and functional and as such it is ideal for conferences and functions. This seems to be it's bread and butter: conferences, special events, wedding fairs etc. If you need a place to stay in Croydon, for the price its ok.
