“Beware, Terrible!”

My husband and I stayed here on the night of our wedding reception as a treat. We also paid for my brother in-law and his partner to stay.

We arrived back from the party at about 2am to find that our part of the hotel had no electricity! Myself and my husband had not been to the hotel before hand so had absolutely no idea what the layout of the room was like! I went down to reception but found no one to be around and no notice of what to do in an emergancy. As a taxi had dropped us off and I didn't fancy my chances of getting another one we had to just get on with it! This ment us having to unpin my hair which was extravagantly done by the light of my mobile phone!

Worst of all the hotel have made absolutely no apology let alone given any kind of compensation. We had pre paid for the rooms (both of which had no lights) and they have no intention of giving us a refund. They say that the TV's were working as they are on a different cicuit and that they should have provided us with ample light. They also say we should have called the off site night porter by dialling 0 from our room telephone! We couldn't even see there was a telephone!

“Trying to be Quaint”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2009

A nice looking building from the outside, inside there was a nice rustic bar, even though it wasn't overly full, the girl on reception was extremely busy and checking in took longer than expected.
The rooms were pleasant, clean and reasonably well appointed, I was quite confused with the image they were trying to create as I found the decor somewhat busy and kitch.
The bathroom had a very nice heated floor, but no door handle just a lock and several broken tiles round the toilet and a toilet roll holder that was just hanging to the wall.
The shower door was badly fitting and there were dirty tiles in the shower.
Breakfast was good and freshly cooked, checking out was better than checking in as we weren't in a rush.
The Pride of the Valley ist rying to be quaint, in my opinion it ain't!

“don't expect any sleep here!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2009

We were moving back to Uk and wanted a nice country pub with a good restaurant close to our new house. We booked for 2 nights, two rooms for two adults and two teenagers. We had a long journey but were confident after reading a few reviews that we were heading for a great destination where we could relax before the furniture arrived early the next morning.
First problem, despite having just travelled accross europe with our trusty sat nav it could not find this place!, it took us to a road with the same name near Farnham station, nearly an hour later after driving around every lane we found it totally due to asking a local, as we later discovered perhaps sat nav was trying to save us!
We went to checkin and of course mentioned the problem finding them and were met with total indifference and told it happens all the time, the man had a wry smile on his face as he said did you end up by the station!!, surely a note on the web site might help?
We had booked for 4 people and my son had gone back to Uni so there was just the three of us, they did'nt even notice, it was clear this may be not the charming experience we hoped for.
We were shown , actually no directed to our rooms, up a creaky staircase, he clearly felt no need to take us, first impressions, someone here is obviously keen at a bit of diy decoration or was rather fond of changing rooms, just not very good at it. No real theme just lots of tat. The first thing I noticed in our room was that we were right on the corner of the main road which was noisy beyong belief, nightmare as we were so tired and just wanted a good meal and restful night.. To make things even worse some of the windows did not even shut ..in winter, they were so warped.
I went to my daughters room, same thing , full of tat, everything you touched fell off, I kid you not, toilet roll holder, soap dish holder, the list went on.Also both the single beds were the cheap kind that rock from side to side. The four poster in our room was the smallest double I have ever seen, it was a cheap, flat packed four poster in mahogony which literally swayed from side to side. We all laughed though of course we thought ...help.
What I could not understand was the fact they clearly had other rooms so why put us right at the end by a noisy road?.
We at least hoped for a decent dinner, down we went to a fairly empty bar except for a few locals. It was made clear to us that chef was off soon so we had better order quickly, again we thought, is this for real? the place was dead apart from another gentleman who we discovered was the only other guest eating and was in the room next to my daughter and kept her awake all night with his cough, along with a boiler going on and off all night in our room.
We all ordered two courses, it was certainly not cheap and I could not believe the mains did not even come with veg!! I ordered extra cabbage and broccoli as a side at a ridiulous price, after all paying more than £12 in a country pub for so called duck confit that was just a reheated leg on a bed of tasteless mash they even forgot the truffle, I felt needed veg with it, though was less than happy to have to pay so much more for a tiny plate of veg, disgraceful. The rest of the food followed the same pattern, tasteless and very, very expensive.
This was getting worse by the minute when the manager came up and said, fore warned is fore armed, we wondered what on earth he was on about, I expected Basil Fawlty to appear any minute, he then told us that chef was off tomorrow and there would be no cooked breakfast!!!!! just a continental. As we were to find, cold croissants and a few cereals, no sign of the award winning sausages advertised!!!. What really promted me to write this is the don't care attitude, when we came down to the so called breakfast there was a woman behind the counter, the manager and a cleaner, surely one them could of fried us a sausage and egg or given us the option.
We were also offered no discount for not having had a proper cooked breakfast. Well enough is enough, my husband was fuming by now after an awful nights sleep, woken by traffic at around 6 am plus the boiler sounding off all night. We informed the don't care staff of our terrible night, and that we felt we could not stay another night, no offer of a better room so we checked out.
We simlpy could not believe our experience, what a return to Uk!!!. we are relieved to find many great pubs in this area since, just avoid this one.

“Not a Hotel - Unwelcoming and very deppressing pub with rooms”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2009

After finding the Hotel in the middle of a forest, we were greeted by a very sultry middle-aged lady that really gave us the impression that we were disturbing her. We were then sent off up some creaky old stairs and down some dark corridors to find our room. The room was bright red and filled with as many, old warn out, bits of odd furniture someone could obviously find.

In the evening when we came down for dinner we found that the restaurant was very expensive especially for the quality of the food and service we received. Probably why we were the only two in the restaurant.

After we ate we went in the bar for a drink to find it was also empty besides for a couple of older men stood round the bar. The problem is there was nowhere else to go as the hotel is in the middle of nowhere and is about 15minute drive to Farnham which is not really very convenient for an evening drink in a place with some atmosphere.

Clearly we wont be going back when in the centre of Farnham you can find much better accommodation and at a better price.

“Great small hotel for a countryside break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2008

Me and my partner wanted a weekend away from crowded London and have a rest somewhere in the country. We were told about the Pride of the Valley. What a gem!
Finding it at night was not an easy task, but then again I could not find my way out of a paper bag without a tube map!
The hotel is charming with a really smart restaurant and bar that was trendy and smart. The food was excellent and the service friendly and efficient.
The room was very comfortable and had an enormous bathroom with a fantastic bathtub (big enough for two).

The hotel is located in the Surrey countryside and there are amazing walks within a very short distance of the hotel.

I don't really understand how anyone could give this hotel a bad review. We thought that location, service, food and accommodation were excellent.

If you need to recharge your batteries and fancy a quiet weekend away from the daily grind but close enough to London, look no further!
