“Ideal for a Gatwick stopover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

I booked this hotel through Lastminute.com it was the best price I could find. A cab from Gatwick to the hotel cost 16 gbp, it was late and I decided to go with a cab rather than take the shuttle bus which is free from the airport to the hotel. I arrived to the hotel and there was no trouble getting my room. I just needed a bed to sleep in and a shower before I would continue my flight, I had come all the way from Australia so I was pretty exhausted and jet lagged. I didn't eat in their restaurant because I arrived too late and in the morning I decided to grab breakfast in the airport instead of at the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful.
The only but about this was the shower, I could not get warm water so I had to take a cold shower which was a bit annoying seeing as I just came from summer to ice-cold winter and was already cold.

I took the shuttle bus back and the driver was really nice and talked a lot. The fare back to the airport was 5 gbp and it took perhaps 10 min. but not more to get there.

All in all fine, I would use it again for a stopover!

“I wouldn't board my dog here!”

I was booked into this hotel by my Company's travel agent and was slightly apprehensive when I saw the price.
When I arrived, most of the car-parks were full, it had snowed the day before and no attempt had been made to clear any of it. The snow was over my shoes as I walked to the reception.
The next morning the car-park was completely frozen and very hazardous to walk on.
The hotel had lost the fax containing the travel agent's payment details, so made me wait for 30 minutes in the freezing cold reception whilst they awaited a replacement fax. They refused to give a key until they had received payment, despite a booking that they had received and accepted from a reputable travel agent.
The room was grubby, the carpet filthy and there was black mould all over the window frame.
On checking the bed I found what I am sure was the corpse of a bed bug, though without a magnifying glass I can't confirm this.
The hotel operates a strict 'pay as you go' policy, and despite meals and drinks charges being covered by the booking, they refused to accept anything other than cash, so I had to pay for everything up front, and claim it back from my employers later.
Food was adequate, though the beef and ale pie dinner was bulked out by a huge flaky pastry crust and a large pile of shredded lettuce, the sustenant part of the pie being actually quite small.
The bar and the restaurant are the best facilities this place has, and seem to have been refurburbished recently.
An alarm call is not necessary in this hotel, as the fire alarm woke me up with a fright at 5.40 a.m. It stopped shortly afterwards, so I assumed it was a false alarm, though a return to sleep was impossible.
The staff, if you can understand their strong accents are fairly arrogant and unhelpful.
This place must have been quite grand at some time in the past, but at present it's a stained, peeling, grubby, dump. Until it undergoes refurbishment and a major attitude adjustment of its staff it will remain that way.

Room Tip: Don't stay there.

“Good Hotel for Gatwick stopovers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We booked a one night stay for 22 January 2012 via the travel agent and were frankly very worried by some of the negative reviews on this site when we checked prior to setting off.
We found parking good and close-by. The Hotel room was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. There is a pleasant bar surving snacks and also a restaurant. The bus transfer was excellent. We cannot understand the negative reviews as we found this hotel good value for money and would use it again for parking and stopovers.

“a joke of a hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We arrived at Russ Hill at about 9.30pm to find the carparks crammed with cars and no space to park. The guy in charge of parking was very loud and arrogant. We drove around the carparks, which were more like disused council yards, numerous times trying to find a suitable space but to no avail. The duty manager then came to us and started breaking off branches from the trees and bushes to try to make enough room for us. I was very unhappy about leaving my car there for 2 weeks whilst on holiday but had no other option at that time of night.
When we finally got to the reception desk we were met by another very rude and arrogant man who told us there were security cameras in the carpark and if any damage to out car occured we would be able to see what happened. I think not. There are no cameras in the car park, a blatant lie!!
We found our room which I think at one time was a broom cupboard!! We had to put our suitcases in the wardrobe and the bathroom as there wasn't any room in the actual bedroom area. We resigned ourselves to the fact that it was just for one night and that the next day was the start of our 2 week holiday and fell asleep. Only to be woken up less than an hour later (approx 1am) by the fire alarm going off in the room. In panic we got dressed and went to the reception desk where the receptionist told us it was a false alarm and to go back to our room. No sign of an apology!! 5 minutes later, it went off again. So again we went to the reception to be told not to worry, its just people smoking too much in one of the rooms. Another lie, it was members of staff smoking upstairs just outside our room. Again no apology.
If ever there was a hotel to resemble Fawlty Towers it's this one!! A joke of a hotel that should not be recommended.
Having said that, on our return our car was not damaged in anyway. Probably due more to luck than anything else.
The building itself is quite nice and has some lovely features. With a complete refurb and new management it could be a good hotel. However we never intend staying here again and certainly wouldn't recommend it.

“Does what it says on the label”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

The hotel really needs to be refurbished but as a single traveller it was an adequate place to sleep over before an early flight. Beware I booked it through and internet site and got hung with an extra £15 cancellation charge (which was apparently to indemnify me if I cancelled) I only booked it 24 hours before staying so that wasn't going to be likely and the room and a weeks parking was only £60 anyway. Be careful how you book it and take it for what it is. Clean, convenient and a bit dog eared.
