My partner and I stayed at Babington House for a few days in February 2012. The staff are lovely and it's a nice place for a comfortable (if somewhat overpriced) and relaxing stay, though this is definitely not a place for an exquisite treat. If you count your money (in any way) or if it's a treat you are after, or simply a superb spa or hotel, then look elsewhere. My partner and I are not Spa regulars, but we stayed at a five star hotel in Germany recently, which was cheaper, had it's own spa, and made staying at Babington House feel like a weekend at Holiday Inn...
As of early 2012 the House itself is pleasant, but far from amazing. The communal areas feel tired and somewhat heavy-handed, the atmosphere is supposed to be really casual, but at times it just feels a little sloppy. Little things but they add up.
Our room had lovely views, furnishings and period features, but for some reason had really well used, visibly cheap and very squeaky laminate flooring. The reception hall is welcoming and ornate, but has large chunks of white paper crudely stapled to the ceiling to cover up holes in plastering. The food is not spot on, as you would expect it to be, almost always either over-seasoned or under seasoned, often overcooked. The House also offers complimentary afternoon tea, which is nice, but even here the quality of food is pretty inconsistent. The snooker room is used as luggage storage room by the hotel staff, which seems like a casual step too far. The landscaping of the grounds, considering it's a country estate, is pretty DIY and uninspiring.
The Cowshed Active which is the Spa area of the House is fine, but leaves a lot more to be desired. It has two heated 15 meter pools, one inside a barn-like building, one just outside. It also has cold and hot drench showers, a sauna, a steam room, and an aroma room. The Spa is cleanish, but has had its fair share of use. The steam room is tired but fine, a bit like any steam room in an outlet of a gym chain. The aroma room has slight hint of something herbal, but the dominant aroma is that of a warmish, tiled room. The sauna is on par with the steam room though the wooden benches are splintering in places. The best feature of the Spa are the pools, these are great to swim in, but are frustratingly unkept (for a luxury hotel that is) - the tiles have mineral deposits on them, and the panoramic windows on either side of the internal pool are not kept clean, so not much of a panorama. On a more positive note, the treatment rooms, are wonderful, as are the treatments (for which you pay separately).
Overall, staying at Babington House is a nice experience, with faint glimmers of luxury. Unfortunately, it does not live up to its reputation or its well-presented website, and is not worth the money. For a genuinely exquisite country retreat, or an amazing spa, look elsewhere.
