“Charming, Friendly, Marvelously Atmospheric”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2010

It was well past dark, and we were afraid we would not make it to the hotel where we were staying in time for dinner. So we stopped at the Gwesty Minffordd. It was misty and cold, and this charming little hotel welcomed us like a sparkling jewel of warmth and character.

The owner could not have been friendlier, and we enjoyed chatting with him while we waited for our meal to be prepared. And, we learned so much from him about the history of the hotel and its beautiful location. When we travel, we like to enjoy as much of the uniqueness of a place as possible. Otherwise, what is the point of traveling? So it is experiences such as the one we had at the Gwesty Minffordd that makes a trip so very special. I might add that our meal was delicious, cooked to perfection.

One of the guests staying at the hotel was traveling with her dog, and we were delighted with how accommodating the owner of the Gwesty was. The lady didn't like leaving her dog alone, and he suggested that instead of taking her after-dinner coffee in the dinning room, that she have it in the lounge where her dog could join her. When we left, we could see the two of them through the large windows. The lady was sitting on the floor, holding a book in one hand and petting her friend with the other.

All in all, we got the impression that the owner could not do too much for his guests. We plan to return to Wales very soon, perhaps next October and shall plan a route that allows us to stay at this wonderful hotel, with its Old-World decor, exposed wooden beams, and friendly owner.

“Superb location, cozy, friendly small hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2010

Ideal location right at the foot of Cadair Idris, probably my favourite mountain climb in Wales. The hotel has 8 rooms and it is easy to mingle with the guests in the bar or find a more quiet corner in one of the two guest lounges. Bar meals were good value and the breakfast was excellent for choice. Slept very well, possibly because there are no TVs in the rooms, which makes it quieter at night.

“Wonderful location, dog friendly, overpriced.”

The hotel looked somewhat tired from the outside and dated at reception, but our ground floor 'dog' room was surprisingly pleasant, spotless, with no odours from previous 'guests', great views, good facilities, and plenty of space for our dog. The location is superb for hikers, dog walking or just admiring the beautiful scenery. Breakfast was very good though we received a little too much attention from the owner. Having stayed in many hotels (this was more like a B&B), we would only recommend Minffordd Hotel to dog owners, as we felt the service and quality received did not equal the cost.

“Poor customer relations”

I had booked a double and single room for Sat 27th Sept and had paid a £75 deposit on my credit card. I confirmed all details last Wednesday and was advised to book a table for the evening meal as the hotel only had 7 tables for service and this I did. I was travelling from the midlnds and two friends coming from Ipswich. We were walking up Cadair Idris on the Mynffordd Path. Having completed the long walk and going to the hotel looking forward to a pleasant evening meal and no panic about trying to find accommodation. To our horror and absolute disgust we found that our rooms had been relet and we would not be accommodated and worse still they would not be able to seat us in the restraunt. Other than a very poor sorry and no offer of trying to assist in finding other accommodation we left in total disgust. On leaving and speaking to others sitting having a drink outside we believe the same had happened to others as they tried to book in.
So not having the experience of the hotel and restraunt I would definitely not book this hotel again and warn others about the double booking as even confirming days before is no certainty you will have your room on the day.

Minffordd, Owner at Gwesty Minffordd Hotel, responded to this review
27 August 2009
We have owned and run Minffordd Hotel very successfully for over 8 years now with very few complaints, We see it as rather strange how people will not complain or inform us of any problems during their stay, were maybe we could put things right, but they will online afterwards.........., anyhow with regards to this review, this is the first time we have overbooked a room like this while we have been here and we aim for it never to happen again, a problem with online bookings on many different sites makes is hard to keep track of which rooms have been let sometimes, the dates in question were fully booked accommodation and restaurant, we pride ourselves on a family / friendly run establishment with a casual relaxed atmosphere we try to create, there are 3 of us in total that run the hotel, unfortunately on this occasion human error which is only natural came into effect here. We did apologise and tried to help the guest in question in any way we could, however this was not required by the guests in question, and it just was not possible for them at the time to dine in our restaurant.

With regards to other people complaining on the same date that we have overbooked their rooms as well that is a total lie, like we said we have never overbooked before or in fact since this occasion.
