“Room above very noisy pub - avoid!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

This hotel is actually a set of rooms above a pub. I say pub, more of a disco. Don't stay here unless you don't want to get to sleep before midnight. Ironically, the "family room" is closest to the noise so you'll be lucky if your children sleep. Manager was absent in the morning and didn't call back to discuss a rebate. Avoid this place.

“Just do it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

I stayed here just for the one night, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel. My room was clean and tidy and the bed was comfy. Downstairs is the bar / dining area. The beer is good (as well as reasonably priced) and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff or Collette, the manageress. She has obviously put some effort into teaching her staff the value of offering good customer service. The choice of food is of a decent range and whilst I opted for cod and chips, everything else looked just as mouth watering. I will most certainly book again should I have another reason to visit Oswestry in the future. Go ahead and book! What are you waiting for?!!

“Excellent service from all of the staff, rooms are adiquate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011 via mobile

We saw A review saying this hotel was terrible, after we had booked! But I think that some people want 5 star hotels for a 2 star price. We found the staff could not do enough for us and were all very friendly. (especialy for our 1 year old). The only thing we could Mark this place down for was the beds were a bit lumpy, and the kitchen extractor fan was a bit noisy in the evening. Having said this the rest of the review would be good if I carried on.

“Basic but OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2011

Stayed here for 1 night recently in a single room. Check in was at the bar as others have said, no problems on this front. There's a free car park behind the hotel, although this doesn't have many spaces and was pretty jammed when we arrived (travelled with a friend).

The room itself was clean enough although the paintwork in the bathroom was looking pretty rough as was the decor generally in the room, but I've seen worse. The room I had faced the road and although the windows have seen better days, it wasn't too noisy. I've also never seen a sink so small, but at least it worked. The shower was also pretty good. I should also point out that although the rooms are basic, there was a hairdryer, TV, telephone, tea/coffee and Wifi.

Location wise it seemed in a good spot. This was my first trip to Oswestry but it was near to plenty of bars and takeaways and what I think is the main shopping street.

I didn't take breakfast unfortunately as didn't get up in time, so can't comment on this.

Overall, although the hotel is basic and the decor tired, it was pretty cheap (£55 inc breakfast on a Sat) so no real complaints. Would probably try somewhere different if I went back to Oswestry, but wouldn't object to staying again.

“Pub with rooms - basic but clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2011

When I first arrived to the Smithfield Hotel, I just wanted to drive past and keep going! I hadn’t realised that it is basically a pub with rooms upstairs, and some clientele didn’t look like you want to be leaving your car anywhere near them (car park and smoking yard of the pub are in the same place).

However, I’d pre-booked and they had my credit card details, so we parked up and walked in. There was no separate reception for the hotel, you just get your keys from the barmaid. Both the restaurant and bar were done up in an attempt to be modern and trendy and so were the rooms, although it was obvious that this was done on a budget. The bedrooms looked nice and stylish enough, and bathrooms were massive, but both were freezing cold and there were problems with the shower (lukewarm water only, but bath taps worked fine). The mattress was hard and uncomfortable and all you get is a blanket and a flat sheet – forget a down duvet or full quilt covers. You get some traffic noise from the street and, if you are unlucky, you also hear bar guests going to their rooms late at night. There was no internet in the rooms (although advertised) but it worked fine downstairs in the public areas.

Having had my moan, I need to say that staff were both very helpful and professional, and also that the Smithfield offered the cheapest rate I found in Oswestry (including breakfast and free parking). It was clean and centrally located, and if you are not after luxury, it was a pleasant enough experience.

Another thing is that if I was in the area again, I wouldn’t choose to stay in Oswestry. It might market itself as a historic town with several tourist attractions, but it seemed completely dead to us. We arrived about 6pm-ish and couldn’t find anything to see or do – couldn’t see any other tourists either!
