When I first arrived to the Smithfield Hotel, I just wanted to drive past and keep going! I hadn’t realised that it is basically a pub with rooms upstairs, and some clientele didn’t look like you want to be leaving your car anywhere near them (car park and smoking yard of the pub are in the same place).
However, I’d pre-booked and they had my credit card details, so we parked up and walked in. There was no separate reception for the hotel, you just get your keys from the barmaid. Both the restaurant and bar were done up in an attempt to be modern and trendy and so were the rooms, although it was obvious that this was done on a budget. The bedrooms looked nice and stylish enough, and bathrooms were massive, but both were freezing cold and there were problems with the shower (lukewarm water only, but bath taps worked fine). The mattress was hard and uncomfortable and all you get is a blanket and a flat sheet – forget a down duvet or full quilt covers. You get some traffic noise from the street and, if you are unlucky, you also hear bar guests going to their rooms late at night. There was no internet in the rooms (although advertised) but it worked fine downstairs in the public areas.
Having had my moan, I need to say that staff were both very helpful and professional, and also that the Smithfield offered the cheapest rate I found in Oswestry (including breakfast and free parking). It was clean and centrally located, and if you are not after luxury, it was a pleasant enough experience.
Another thing is that if I was in the area again, I wouldn’t choose to stay in Oswestry. It might market itself as a historic town with several tourist attractions, but it seemed completely dead to us. We arrived about 6pm-ish and couldn’t find anything to see or do – couldn’t see any other tourists either!
