“Spiders' Paradise”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Don't stay here - it's awful. We arrived to a closed pub and had to work out how to actually get into our room. The room itself was tired and smelt damped, and worst of all it was dirty. The bed wasn't clean - there were unidentified 'bits' in there and the mattress felt like it was made of concrete. The bathroom didn't seem to have been cleaned since the last people stayed - their shower gel and hairballs were still in the shower. Worst of all were the cobwebs which were everywhere - clearly the room hasn't been properly cleaned for ages. However, the seven spiders that we counted seemed very happy. We had a note in our room saying they weren't doing breakfast the following morning. We were initially quite cross but after seeing the room, quickly decided that there was no way we'd risk eating there! Oh, and we were charged £60 for the pleasure.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs.

“Appalling Customer Service - Avoid”

I am writing this review on behalf of two elderly relatives who do not have access to a computer.
They stayed on Saturday, 23rd July, having travelled to the area for a family wedding. Initially they had booked for two nights, but owing to a change of plan they advised the landlord that they would only be staying for one. Apparently this was not a problem,
The subject of a time for breakfast was brought up. My Uncle suggested "8.30 to 9ish", only to be told quite bluntly. "We don't do ish." So 8.30 was agreed on. However, when they went down to breakfast there was no-one there, and the place was locked up! Not a soul in sight!
So, two elderly people had to forgo their breakfast. Absolutely appalling!
Years ago this place was famous for its warm welcome, but alas no more. Shame on you, landlord, for leaving these two people hungry.
Avoid if you want breakfast with your bed!

“Beware!”

Couldn't fault our first night, friendly welcome, comfortable room, Overheard the manager and the bar staff moaning about booking.com not notifying them about bookings, but we have experienced that it is the manager himself!

We booked our stay (one night) through booking.com with no hassle at all. After arriving we thought it would be worth staying a second night, so we asked if they had any vacancies, they said they would let us know in the morning, half an hour later they said we could stay a second night but would have to change rooms (from double to a family) we agreed that would be ok. So off we went for the day, arrived back only to be told by a different staff member that they didn't have a room for us and that they were already double and treble booked and had to send their guests elsewhere!!!!! The bar staff said that the manager had not told them that he arranged for our 2nd night, and quite incidentally, the staff were left on their own as they couldn't get hold of the manager!!!!! Guess he knew what he was doing!

We were also told to phone them if we were going to be late back so that we could order dinner, when we phoned them at 8.30pm they didn't know what we were talking about even though I showed them the note (on their notepaper) that the bar staff the previous night had written.

So at 9.00pm in the evening we (and a child) had to make the 4 hour journey home.

We were going to book there again next year (ready for the Fairford Air Tattoo) but we will definitely not be staying at The Star Inn. I have a feeling that they double book to make sure that they know they are going to be able to fill the rooms on the basis of whoever turns up first!

“Umm, work in progress I think”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

Although the resident drunk was friendly it's not what you'd list as a must have in a B&B. The landlord apologised for him and generally the service was excellent and they were very keen to ensure we had a good stay. The food was excellent in the evening though the fry up in the morning was 3/10 cheap sausage, manky bacon and dusty cups. The room was clean enough but the bathroom has damp and needs decorating, their was no hair dryer available, the radiator didn't work and one of the electrical sockets was burnt and clearly not functioning properly which meant we had to pull the bed out to get to the other two to charge phones, cameras etc. As well as being dangerous. Mentioned it to the landlord and he was going to get a local electrician to sort it. Unfortunately from our first conversation with resident drunk we knew he was the electrician. Don't want to run this down too much as I know he'd only been the landlord 6 months and had refurbished other parts of the Inn and you can't do it all at once, but it wouldn't choose to stay here again. Walls were pretty thin as well and sound did carry

Room Tip: Try the white hart Inn - it looked idyllic!

“Cheap and Cheerful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2010

We had a very pleasant stay here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't eat there because the new owners were changing the menu at the time. When we arrived we were put into a very dark twin room having asked for a double room but were moved to a family suite which was certainly an upgrade! With the cost being £65 a night - you get good value money.
