“Good value for money”

My partner and I stayed at the Abingdon Four Pillars after deciding to treat ourselves to a spur of the moment weekend away. We found the hotel was well positioned for our visit and was very reasonably priced. On arrival staff were efficient and welcoming and gave us some very useful information regarding visiting Oxford. Our room was a reasonable size and we found it to be clean and comfortable. We opted to stay in the hotel for our evening meal and were impressed with the variety on the menu, I chose the salmon tagliatelle and thoroughly enjoyed it. The drinks in the hotel were a bit pricey but in line with other hotels we have stayed in. The breakfast staff were pleasant and well organised, especially as we arrived during the rush and the items on offer were of a good quality. I had not read any reviews prior to going to the hotel, and I was quite suprised to read some of them. My partner and I felt the hotel was very good value for the money we paid and we would be more than happy to visit again.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We stayed here for a 4 day Christmas Break. The room was OK and fairly clean although I found an old cigarette packet under the bedside cabinet when looking for a dropped earring! As Christmas lunch is one of the most important meals of the season we were very disappointed. It was no better than a school dinner. The meal was ready plated and looked as though it had been reheated in the microwave. One piece of turkey joint which was dry, one broken carrot and a square of stuffing with 3 hard sprouts and a couple of hard roasts was not the best dinner I had eaten. On the other 3 days we had breakfast which was always luke warm and nothing more until 3.30pm when we had a choice of a scone or sandwich before dinner in the evening. The entertainment was very good in the evening but nothing during the day other than a quiz on the last afternoon. Would not go there again as I had to take my life in my hands to cross the road when out for a walk on Boxing day.

Room Tip: Ground floor

Dear JohannaSuffolk. Thank you for reviewing our hotel following your recent stay with us. I was disappointed to read that there were some aspects of your stay which you were not happy with; for these disappointments I offer my sincere apologies.

All of our food is freshly cooked to order and we do not reheat or microwave any items on our menu. I have taken on board your comments about the temperature of our breakfast buffet and will be reviewing this with my Head Chef. With the exception of Boxing Day, we do not offer daytime entertainment on our Christmas or New Year packages, however I was pleased that you enjoyed the evening entertainment offerings.

I would be more than happy to discuss your feedback further if you wish to do so.

Yours sincerely,

Ben Sanders

“Better than last time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

My last visit to this location was a good one. It has improved.

The rooms remain as they were, which is good.

Breakfast was fine.

The big difference was that we had dinner there this time. The dinner menu was very good, indeed, better than expected.

It remains a good option for an en route stop over for families and is ideally located for business travellers.

Prices were reasonable too with free wi fi in all rooms and plentiful parking. There is even a fuel station next door !!

Recommended ? Yes.

“Not Bad, not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Good Points: Got a really good deal on the price as i booked last minute; staff friendly - especially night porter; free parking; free wifi in room; good for A34, clean room.

Bad Points: I had to wait 15 minutes before anyone arrived at the desk (11pm), and rang the courtesy phone which rang out. The check in procedure took more time than expected when it finally happened. Function in the hotel meant i could hear music until 1am at least. This was not explained to me on check in, nor was any pre-emptive apology made. No bedside plus sockets in the room meant charging phone on the desk, was not ideal.

Generally, good for the cost and convenient for business, but a few down points.

“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Very good hotel for the money, especially the 2 night leisure promotions. Rooms are always clean and tidy, and staff are always friendly at the desk. we had the three course meals in the evenings and they were always brilliant. Only problem is it is very difficult to find and isn't well sign posted and is hidden behind loads of trees!
