“Friendly staff and excellent food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I booked to stay at the Upper Reaches Hotel in Abingdon as part of a business group. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with all the usual amenities.

We came for dinner that evening; the menu had plenty of choice and at a reasonable price.
The Waiting staff were helpful and friendly, everything arrived in a timely manner, we were the last table to leave but we did not feel rushed or like they wanted to us to leave. Due to the price I expected small portions and cheap ingredients, but this was not the case at all, the food was excellent and everyone cleaned their plates, but still managed to squeeze in dessert.

I will definitely be going back and recommending to my friends.

stayed here before about 18 months ago, and thought it was great, now WELL, still a great location, but paid £97 for a single room when only 10 people staying here, can hear everything that is said in the next room, and the room itself is small, with only one flat pillow, then charged £5 for internet, that has dial up speed at best or no signal at all, drinks over priced, food not great at all, and im sorry i would never stay here again, unless it was a £50 a night hotel, gets £100 a night simply because of location, i will not return , and that is a shame, could be a top hotel!!!!

“Should have taken note form the other reviews.!!”

Well,, what can I say. The reviews were so bad that I rang the hotel to make sure the reviewers had got it wrong. I have to say, my mind was not put at rest as the person I spoke to was jumpy to say the least. However, I needed to book something at short notice so I booked a suite at £150.00 per night for D/B/B. Upon arrival a receptionist checked me in and I made my way through a run down corridor and up flights of steps which had a lovely thread bare carpet and where shabby paintwork was clearly visable. The "suite" had tatty, old fashioned furniture and side lamps that had to be turned on ( when they worked) individualy. The bathroom was very nice, I have to say but again, thread bare carpet in the bedroom/ lounge was not what I was exepcting for this kind of money. I went down to the bar to get an ice busket. I was told that they did not have an ice bucket.... end of conversation.
In the evening, the restaurant was empty , except for 4 pople who were just leaving. The food was OK , nothing special and I particulary liked the butter in wrapped portion packs ( are you kidding) ??
The wine we ordered was not the one bought to the table and tasted really rough , we sent it back and ordered something else. The creme brulee was tastless..... we gave up at this point. It was not helped as we were served by someone with TRAINEE on her apron who struggled with English..
Breakfast ....... was very good and the waiter was superb, The croissants were stale so he had fresh ones baked. He is the only asset this hotel has. Thank God he was there. I went out to find the receptionist to sort out the wine bill......but she was having a cigarette with her "mate" outside the hotel.
Enough said I think?..... please, please dont bother.

Room Tip: Not sure what the other rooms were like..... if you are going to book, book as suite.

“perfectly adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Done the job fine for me . Everything was acceptable ,but i didn't eat in the restaurant ,apart from breakfast , but suspect the food would be adequate too .
Tried to charge me £100 xtra for smoking in my room ,(because the house keeper said it smelled of smoke). Queried this as me and my partners r both smokers ,so the room would possibly smell of smoke ,and secondly i had lit the candles that were in the room and this is possibly why it smelled of smoke. The £100 was taken of the bill.
Overall i thought the place was fine and met my expectations. Good B&B .

“will try to avoid in future”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

I will try to avoid this hotel in future but unfortunately there are not many places to stay in central Abingdon so choice is limited. The room is tired the bathroom small with a poor shower . The interior and exterior need attention. You can see it used to be Post House or THF hotel as you can the outline of the old sign on the gable end . It is well located and could be nice ...but it isn't. The breakfast was the worst I have ever had. Unbelievably the fruit cocktail was tasteless , the coffee a sludge that left a ring around the cup and the egg and bacon sandwich was neither fresh nor toasted possibly just stale. Whoever let it leave the kitchen should be ashamed. For £ 112.50 it was terrible. I should day that the staff were pleasant and welcoming although they should tell you you need a token to exit the carpark. I was not the only guest to make the walk back to reception to get the token having been uanble to exit.
