Having known this place some 40 years ago, when it was a very different set-up, it was useful to find that the place now had the essentials for a touring holiday.1: Good Beds, 2: Good Breakfast, 3: Good Evening Meal. Other things can help to make it even better and the Ryecroft did try to supply them.
The Bedroom for a single person was comfortable, with shower-toilet ensuite, miniTV sets (Freeview Digital) and tea/coffee making facilities (only 1 biscuit supplied!). The walk-in wardrobe I had contained, as well as a hair dryer, an Ironing Board and Iron, something not found everywhere. The room was on the warm side and negated the need for Duvets, fortunately the windows were easy to set open! The bedrooms are on the upstairs floor and there is no access for disabled people and the main door is not wheelchair accessible either.
The Breakfast was a mixture of buffet service for cereals/muesli and orders were then taken for other items. These ranged from Full English (from which you can omit items) through a variety of egg dishes to grapefruit, fresh fruit and yoghurt. Fruit Juice is served in a well-filled jug for your table and there is tea or coffee with toast. Kippers are not an option, a pity as Craster is not too far away.
Evening meals are of good quality and the items can sometimes be adventurous. The menu has Starters, Meat Dishes, Fish Dishes and Vegetarian Dishes plus a choice from “Our sweets selection”. My one disappointing dish was a Game Casserole which came with a large puff pastry topping. I think the item would have been better attempted as a Steak and Kidney Pie. The Sizzling Chicken dish lived up to expectations and a provided a gentle surprise when, as the steaming, sizzling dish was brought in, the heavens opened and seemed to be delivering a celestial fire extinguisher. The Conservatory style dining area, which normally picked up the evening sun beautifully, resounded to the downpour.
The bar area is open in the evenings to guests and locals and provided a small selection of beers, including Farne Islands, a light beer, which I found well worth sampling each night. Wines are ordered by the bottle and their standard red was well worth spreading over the 3-night stay.
Lunches are not served at the Hotel, but they will make up a packed lunch to order if given notice at the evening meal. For walkers, of which we had two groups in during my stay, this is a useful option and even car tourers might take advantage of them rather than finding a pub.
Afternoon teas were not advertised as being available but, as I was sitting in the lounge after a day out and about, Linda did come up and ask if I would like a pot of tea. That was a nice touch and added to the general air of helpfulness and friendliness of the Hotel.
Check-in and Check out were swift and efficient and the car park had room enough for the guests’ vehicles.
