I read the reviews on tripadvisor after having stayed here, and wondered if the recent reviewers were talking about the same place, though perhaps the staff have changed. I travel quite a bit and I have never had such a rude reception from the only staff member we encountered.
It started with our keys being plonked down on the desk and not even directions to our rooms, let alone any assistance. When I asked if there was anyone to help with the luggage she said "no", nothing more. After a long pause she said "it's only me" and after a longer pause she said "I suppose I could help" but since it was clear this was the last thing she wanted, we declined.
The rooms were adequate, but very dated and small. Since we arrived close to dinner time (we chose not to eat at the hotel because the receptionist was so unfriendly) I decided to have a bath after dinner. At 10pm I tried to have a bath, but there was almost no water pressure and after 30 minutes there was only about 2 inches of barely warm water. I gave up and went to bed. I decided to have an early shower at 5.45am only to find very poor water pressure and barely warm water again. So I had to give up. At breakfast I asked the same receptionist if there was a problem with the hot water. She got almost angry with me, and told me that she had asked other guests and they had had hot water, implying that I was lying. She said the hot water was switched on at 5am and off at 9pm. She said she expected walkers to bathe as soon as they arrived, not late at night and I couldn't expect her to run the hot water all the time. When I said the water pressure was poor, she said I should have told her I wanted some water pressure and she would have put me in a room with a power shower. She was quite angry and aggressive about it, and just about threw our breakfast at us.
We were walking St Cuthbert's Way, and our taxi driver had organized to pick our luggage up for transfer to the next B&B. Despite the receptionist knowing the time he was picking up the luggage, the hotel was locked. He had to return four times before he could get it which really was unacceptable.
