“Fawlty Towers, with hot water rationing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

I read the reviews on tripadvisor after having stayed here, and wondered if the recent reviewers were talking about the same place, though perhaps the staff have changed. I travel quite a bit and I have never had such a rude reception from the only staff member we encountered.

It started with our keys being plonked down on the desk and not even directions to our rooms, let alone any assistance. When I asked if there was anyone to help with the luggage she said "no", nothing more. After a long pause she said "it's only me" and after a longer pause she said "I suppose I could help" but since it was clear this was the last thing she wanted, we declined.

The rooms were adequate, but very dated and small. Since we arrived close to dinner time (we chose not to eat at the hotel because the receptionist was so unfriendly) I decided to have a bath after dinner. At 10pm I tried to have a bath, but there was almost no water pressure and after 30 minutes there was only about 2 inches of barely warm water. I gave up and went to bed. I decided to have an early shower at 5.45am only to find very poor water pressure and barely warm water again. So I had to give up. At breakfast I asked the same receptionist if there was a problem with the hot water. She got almost angry with me, and told me that she had asked other guests and they had had hot water, implying that I was lying. She said the hot water was switched on at 5am and off at 9pm. She said she expected walkers to bathe as soon as they arrived, not late at night and I couldn't expect her to run the hot water all the time. When I said the water pressure was poor, she said I should have told her I wanted some water pressure and she would have put me in a room with a power shower. She was quite angry and aggressive about it, and just about threw our breakfast at us.

We were walking St Cuthbert's Way, and our taxi driver had organized to pick our luggage up for transfer to the next B&B. Despite the receptionist knowing the time he was picking up the luggage, the hotel was locked. He had to return four times before he could get it which really was unacceptable.

“Great hotel !!!”

This is the fifth year that we have stayed at the Ryecroft, and yet again we were not disappointed.
Owners, Clive and Linda go out their way to make sure that your stay is superb in every way.
Very clean hotel, great food, and a well stocked bar is all you need to make your holiday complete
With only 10 rooms, this is a cosy wee hotel, that no traveller or holiday-maker should miss.
This is an honest review to all who read this.

“We were made so welcome on our first visit we will come back.”

We stayed for two nights and if work hadn't been a problem we would have stayed another night. The beds were so comfy and the bedroom was spotless as was the bathroom. The breakfast and evening meals were beautifully cooked and the service was lovely. We were made to feel very welcome by our hosts and we will definitely go back. From Joyce and Ann from Bradford.

“A great base for doing St Cuthbert's Way!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2011

I took a walking group of nine up to the Borders to do St Cuthbert's Way over Whitsun and we used The Ryecroft as a base. I can't speak highly enough of the Hotel with Linda and Clive being very welcoming and great fun. Food was excellent (we ate in 3 nights out of 5), and the bar (with one real ale pump) very enjoyable for evening relaxation. All the rooms were very comfortable and represented excellent value. The Hotel is a 5-10 min walk from the centre of Wooler where there are other facilities & options for eating if you want a change (e.g. Milan Italian was superb). Wooler proved to be a very good base for doing the St Cuthbert's Way - we used Ron's taxis to ferry us to and from start and end points each day which worked perfectly.

Thanks to everyone at the Ryecroft who made our overnight stay a good one, twenty hungry cyclists arrived after a 65 mile trip cold, wet, tired and hungry to a warm greeting and a wonderful wholesome meal, we asked for plenty of food and thats what we got. We all slept well, the rooms are very comfortable but a special mention from those who stayed in the bungalow,a lovely quiet place to stay.
