“Very special”

We found this place in the Good Hotel Guide but it isn't a hotel, it is a farmhouse B&B and a superb one. It is in a remote location on a large working organic farm and is surrounded by cattlesheds, fields full of sheep, tractors, farm implements etc. On arrival we were greeted by our hostess, Enid, who was warm and charming throughout our stay. Our room was comfortable with a generous sized bathroom, TV, fridge with fresh milk, home made shortbreads, tea and coffee. We were there for 2 nights and on the first night had dinner - this was a simple, tasty, 3 course meal cooked by Enid and consisted of soup, one of their own chickens and steamed treacle pudding. This cost £20 pp including a glass of sherry. Wine was £10 a bottle. Breakfast was equally good. Places like this are rare and we loved it.

“Best B/B we've ever stayed in.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

The family make you feel completely comfortable and their hard work makes it so you can relax and meet and eat with the other guests. The breakfasts were great and suppers were perfect home cooking, sourced mainly from the farm - delicious. Its hard to find but if you are anywhere nearby, have a treat and stay there.

“Lovely rural B&B with great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2009

Thistleyhaugh is a family run B&B. The rooms are furnished in an eclectic English style mixing antiques with art and antiques of all eras. The bedroom we occupied (Rose) and the public rooms were all spotless and very comfortable.

Food is a real highlight. The focus is on locally sourced high quality produce. Breakfast is excellent with a good choice of cereals, fruit, etc and then all the elements of a full English breakfast or local craster kippers. The 3 course evening meal is good value at £20 and there is a small selection of wines at reasonable prices. There is no choice for dinner but you can specify food dislikes when booking and there is some flexibility e.g. offering ice cream as an alternative to the hot pudding.

Thistleyhaugh is at the end of a very long drive. It would be impracticable to try to walk there from the main road and it might be difficult to find at night. We had no difficulty in the daytime following the directions given carefully. Dinner is not available on Saturday evening so you need to be prepared to drive or take a taxi for that one night.

There was a real houseparty atmosphere. All guests sit at the same large table for meals. Complimentary sherry is provided before dinner and this encourages the guests to mix.

“delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2009

we stayed at Thistleyhaugh for 3 nights and thought it was wonderful. Our two girls enjoyed the free run of the garden - with trampoline and dog. in particular our 9 year old enjoyed sitting in the garden chatting to Enid whilst keeping an eye on one of Enid's grandchildren in the pram. There are cows, pigs and chicken. The cows are beef , not diary and the pigs on a continuos feed system. Again our 9 year old enjoyed seeing all the animals.

The inside of the house is done out very gracefully with fridge in your room as well as cold bottle of tap water in the fridge, kettel and a jar of shortbread biscuits.

we found the holiday very relaxingg and there is a lot to do nearby.

breakfast was excellent - the kippers in particular are recommended.

Supper was good both nights and we always felt warmly welcomed without being smothered.

Note mobile phone signal is weak in the area andn as i had to receive some emails Zoe( Enid's daughter in law who cooks the suppers) was very patient and kind in helpig me access various emails by sending them through to her account and then copying them onto a memory stick.

“Relaxing spot away from it all!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2009

We just spent a week at Enid's lovely organic b&b farm, in room Mary which was large and nicely decorated! the house was comfy and elegant as well; all the guests sat at the large communal table for meals. For Breakfast Enid served upon request deliciously moist smoked kippers with scrambled eggs. We had 2 dinners at home, very delicious, cooked by her daughters. It was lambing season so it was a delight to drive along the road of the property or walk around. They have a few (outdoor) dogs that are super friendly too! The house is a fair drive from the main road but except for around Newcastle, there was very little traffic and crowds anywhere! Other delicious meals at Cook & Barker Inn, Alnwick! Very friendly corner of the country!
