“brilliant,quirky little place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

My husband and myself stayed here for one night only but wished we had stayed longer. Our room,The Calfpen, was small but perfectly quaint and very welcoming. This is a perfect place for a short stay and Evelyn is so friendly and helpfull, nothing is too much trouble for her as she offered to show us around the whole place.I think the reason some reviewers think it is a bit untidy and haphazard is that the owners are constantly changing and adding to the originality of the place. Its not the Hilton but if you want a warm friendly place to stay in beautiful surroundings with second to none hospitality, this is the place for you.

“Awful Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

I wonder if the other reviews are about the same place ! Our reservation was on a torn scrap of paper and we were ticked off upon arrival. The hotel is dark and very untidy. It is surrounded by a junk yard and filled with junk, everywhere. We booked the 'premier room which had no lock on the door, just a big hole in it. The toilet was broken and took 15 mins to refill. The sink was mounted on a 1/2 piece of plywood that was bending under the weight. The glass to the windows was held in with pins and bits of plastic. The room was cold with no gas fire despite the room description. Route to the room was through rooms full of junk and broken old furniture. The main lounge, where our welcome drink was served was nothing less than, grubby and in need of a complete makeover. There were tatty carpet tiles on the floor that weren't even joined up. The gardens are shabby and overgrown.
At £110 a night, I expect quality not quirky and grubby. Sorry to have to write this review because the owners are really nice. If you enjoy this hotel then you clearly will accept anything.

Room Tip: Don't book the 'Premier room.

“Fantastic Quirky Unusual”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

Stayed here with my husband and dog for 3 nights. This place really is a little peace of paradise in Alnwick. Its so unusual and friendly. The rooms are not massive but they are really clean and tidy. There is no bar at this hotel but Evelyn puts a couple of wine glasses in your room and you can take your own if you want to. Nothing seems to be a problem if you ask for it here. As soon as we arrived we were offered a brew outside in the lovely courtyard area. Which was most welcomed. They also sell a few antiques here aswell, if you are so inclined, would defo go back here if I go back up this way. Makes a change to see a place with some character instead your run of the mill hotel chains, which this is definately not. Very reasonable, nice breakfast, loadsa choice, and if you want extra bacon, eggs etc then just ask, nothing is a problem.
Also a nice place to eat which isnt far, 5 mins, is The Cook and Barter. Good food, and friendly locals, as soon as we walked in people were talking to us....... would defo recommend . But i would book, it gets incredibly busy. Seahouses is quite a nice little place to visit, and you would normally get your boats from here to go and see the grey seal colonies etc and there is a great pub right on the front, cant remember the name now, but you cant miss it, its quite big but does a great lunch/dinner. And not to overpriced either. So, if you had any doubts whatsover about Alnwick Lodge, please dont, im quite an avid traveller so ive stayed in an awful lot of places and this one is really worth it. Enjoy!

“Unusual- We are unlikely to stay there again.”

We were disappointed with our room- the dovecote. We had been told we would have a room with good lighting. In fact it was very poor lighting- one tiny window in the main bedroom. We had expected a bath in the ensiuite and there was only a cramped shower room. One of the towels had holes in. Although we had booked for 3 nights we were not offered a reduction on the price of £75 for a double for the first night.
The breakfast was also disappointing. No croissants on offer- just white or brown bread which took an age to cook in the one self service toaster. The fried breakfast was mediocre.
On the positive side Evelyn was very helpful with suggestions for places to eat in the Evening . Also it makes a change to stay in a place with character. I think this would appeal to North Americans fed up with bland motel rooms. We also felt the car was safe in the car park ,in spite of the warning notice about valuables. We liked the welcoming cup of tea. The offer of a glass of wine would have even been more welcome.
