“Great Castle”

Stayed here the 25th Nov with my husband. We came to the halloween family event and were desparate to stay after that. We booked in for the ghost tour £20 pp and the Guard room which was £120 per night and sleeps 2. We arrived the day after the snow came and even though the roads were being regularly ploughed driving conditions were bad and some of the roads leading to castle are very small. Got there though without any accidents. We got upgraded to The Dairy apartment which was so big and nice. I loved the log burning fire it was so cosy and atmospheric. The kitchen is well equipped, everything you need (apart from an oven tray). Everything was very clean. I love the old style mis match decor but if people want modern then just don't come! (Aimed at previous reviews!). I don't know what staff ruined other peoples visits because we found the staff very friendly, informative and helpful. The ghost tour was ok, i would have preffered to have moved about the castle a bit more and gone to a few other rooms as it seemed to drag out a bit. I would like to do a proper ghosthunt, not just a tour. So may well return for that. Also would like to return to look around the grounds. Take everything you need food wise as it is a drive to get provisions. Tea and coffee is in the apartment, also sachets of milk in case u forget. A good nights sleep even after being spooked out after the ghost tour, had a few orbs on pictures as well. Overall had a great time and would love to go back, just need to save up!

“Great location ruined by the staff!!”

We pulled in to the grand and somewhat spooky grounds of Chillingham ready for an excellent night with great atmosphere. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who showed us to our room. The room was adequate and no less than you would expect for the age of the location, however the price was FAR FAR too much. We were hoping for a ghost walk, this didnt happen as the staff were busy with another event. Once you've walked round the dungeons (the only attraction open after 5) we were left with little to do. We roamed the corridors to try and get a feel for the place and were greeted most unwelcomingly and in the end confined ourselves to our suite. The real horror came the following morning as we were confronted by a very unfriendly and quite frankly rude member of staff who wrongly accused us of disturbing other guests all night when we had retired at 10pm! they then charged £35 for a Z-bed we had used and to add insult to injury had attempted to charge £50 for 'sick' in the room, considering we cleaned the suite top to bottom in the morning and certainly noone had been ill at any point. We had been looking forward to this break for 3 months since we had booked it. TOTAL waste of cash, massively over priced and the only ghouls we came across were in the office in the morning!!

“Unique experience!”

Chillingham Castle offers a unique experience for a stay-over guest - staying in a 12th century castle is very special. Stay over guests are offered free entry to the museum so watch that you arrive early enough to spend time before closing. You are also free to wander through the gardens and grounds which are lovely. We stayed with our two teenage sons in the Grey Apartment which offers huge rooms, and nice big and comfortable beds. The main problem for us was that the hot water system was very small - really not able to cater for a family of four. For us this was one of our most expensive nights of accommodation during our three week holiday in the UK. I felt that staff friendliness and welcoming was one area that could be improved. The ghost tour was enjoyed by the whole family but was really too long - 2.5 hours. I would recommend staying at Chillingham Castle as a unique experience though 1 night was enough for our family.

“An escape from reality”

Had a fantastic time at this wonderful castle. The staff were great, when we arrived we were told we had been upgraded which was very nice so we stayed in the landseer apartment. The apartment was full of character and had a very homely feel. The rooms where very warm and cosy and the helpful staff provided logs so we have a fire burning which added to the atmosphere. The castle itself was open until five and we were free to wander around and explore this historic and interesting building. The grounds and woodland walks were also very pleasant. Reading up on the restoration was very interesting and sir humphry's description of the decor as being 'ragged wonderful' sums it up very well. If you want something that is pristine and perfect with no cobwebs and furniture that all matches go to a travel lodge. It's an 800 year old castle so of course it is not perfect (yes it smells a bit musty and there is cracks is walls etc) but this all adds to the charm. I loved it and can't wait to go back.

“Wonderfully quirky”

We stayed here for 4 nights in August and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Never having stayed in a castle and with the mixed reviews on here I was a little apprehensive.
My only complaint was the sofa in our apartment (the Lookout). I dont think it had any springs left as when I sat down it felt like I was sitting on the floor.
The apartment slept 5 in 3 bedrooms with lovely views over the grounds and gardens. It was very clean and there was none of the smells mentioned on here
To sum up I'd say that if you want something different from your usual multi-national chain hotels then do consider this. We thought it very good value and if there are 3 or more it is even better, and how often can you claim to have stayed in an 800 year old castle.
