We arrived in the evening and were shown to our apartment called "The Stable". There is a reason why The Stable was not pictured online, because it was painted four different shades of pink, had garage sale picked furniture, mold growing in the guest book, and dead insects in the sink! There is a reason why The Stable was not pictured online, because it was painted four different shades of pink, had garage sale picked furniture, mold growing in the guest book, and dead insects in the sink! Not only that, but it had a terrible smell. One of the caretakers warned us that sometimes bats sneak in. On the floors were numerous scraps of carpet (some literally nailed to the floor).

We upgraded to the Tower and were a lot happier. However, we began to notice mold growing in the space between the ceiling and wall. We found dead bugs in the window sills. The pull out double had a huge yellow stain on the sheets. And in the bathroom the stone wall had giant cracks running through it.

There were no ghosts or hauntings. A clipped magazine article in our guest book had the owner quoted as saying that the castle was running out of money but then the ghosts starting showing up and we had found a solution.

The castle is also a long distance from town and restaurants. Stay in a nice B&B instead of Chillingham!!

I love Chillingham castle, it is by far my favourate place in England.
I have been to stay at the castle two times and in Febuary my four friends and I are booked into the Gray room for two nights for my 21st birthday.
I have not yet seen any ghosts but i have felt strange things on both my trips.
I highly recomend the ghost tour, I have never been so spooked!!!!

Me and my family stayed twice at Chillingham Castle. In Jan 04 and Jan 06. I don’t think anyone can expect to find high standard, modern furnitured, completely renovated hotel there, because it is a castle. And it is great that in Chillingham you can experience medieval atmosphere. To my opinion the in-suit shower there should be considered as complimentary option, because price of apartment for four guests is more than reasonable. I agree that many people will not find the castle comfortable, but for those who like fireplace cosiness, antique furniture and adventures with ghosts Chillingham is really good place.
Kitchen was equipped with everything we needed: we had breakfasts and dinners at our temporary home. Good advise will be to come to Castle with own/rented car, then you’ll have the opportunity to explore neighbouring lands, which are very beautiful.

We will go there again to celebrate my anniversary and will bring 5 our friends with us.

We made a booking for a once in a lifetime stay at this Castle hotel. Upon booking we were told we had the run of the hotel room wise as we were booking so well in advance all rooms were available. A reservation was made and a deposit paid. Weeks before our departure from Australia ( months after the booking was made and months after the deposit had been made ) we were sent an email asking us to re-arrange our holiday and informing us " the booking dates were not accepatbale " anymore to the owners of the castle / hotel. That we " could " stay if we delayed our plans by two weeks. After lengthy phone calls and so called excuses we were advised that a mistake had been made, a wedding was now being held ( with more rooms being let ) and therefore our prior booking meant nothing to the new owners / management. Frankly the management would not honour it's reservation and basically told us to get lost !

Dreadful place, damp and cold, supposed to be self catering, but, luckily we only stayed the night as the facilities were awful. It was supposed to be haunted, perhaps it was, but, nothing that a bit of heating would not have cured. The furniture and beds must have come from the local house clearance depot, they were "old furniishing" in the worst possible meaning of the phrase, the place was dirty and the shower room most unappealing. The people who own the place have all my sympathy, it must cost a fortune to live in and they really do need all the visitors who are daft enough to stay to bolster up their finances, I am sure, but, if I were you, don't be foolish enough to help them out, they had my money, let that be a lesson to you, I made a mistake, we all can, just learn from me and stay well away from the "apartments", particularly the gatehouse! It is, without doubt ,the worst place I have stayed in, ever, including my 1960's borading school, which tells you something if you know what those establishments were like! Having said all this, just may be, by now, the place has been sorted out, if so, it could be super. I hope it has, I would not like anyone else to still be able to bring to mind the dreadful smell of damp after nearly two years. Perhaps it was ghost perfume and I just didn't appreciate the subtle difference, I am not going to go back to find out.,
