“Fabulous food, weekend retreat, highly recommended”

We stayed here for one night, booked in at 2pm and we were given a lovely suite with a separate sitting room which opened out into a garden area.

Our meal was beautiful, we enjoyed all 3 courses. Good wholesome food which was thoroughly enjoyable.

The owners took their time to chat as well as giving us plenty of time to enjoy our child free night.

We will be going back x

“Delightful Northumberland break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

A lovely place to stay for a relaxed few days away. The room was comfortable and nicely furnished. Good value B&B with the added bonus of a restaurant on site. We dined at the restaurant both nights and the food was of good quality. Lovely family run business and would recommend it as a place to stay.

Room Tip: It is rural so transport is a must.

“A Modest Retreat in a Great Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

The Masons Arms is well located for an easy drive to some of Northumbria's top attractions and is only ten minutes from the town of Alnwick. The hotel seems a little tired and may be is suffering from falling trade in the recession. The Forge annex has good sized and traditional bedrooms which need a modest upgrade to keep up with the times. The rooms are slightly over-priced. There is no residents' lounge which was a disappointment on an extended weekend retreat. The restaurant itself offers a limited but well priced menu and the food itself is consistently of an excellent standard. The service can be variable and at times slow and unattentive. If you want somewhere homely and cosy - as a couple - give it a look.

“One night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

Comfortable and clean room and en - suite in stable block at rear. Good parking area - easy to keep an eye on vehicle. Friendly, helpful staff. Good food but a little cramped in dining / bar area. Very nice full English breakfast. Nice rural, historic location but you need to follow the directions off the A1.carefully.

Room Tip: Ask to ensure heating on in room before arrival. This was done for us.

“Will reluctantly give them a second chance.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We only dined here so I can not comment on accomodation.
The bar and restaurant area, the toilet area and entrance hall desperately need updating. The staff were pleasant but we felt they only did as much as they needed to; nothing more. I was surprised by how plain the menu was and how it lacked ANY dish that I wanted. I settled for the medditereanean chicken on the speacials board after being told it was a pasta dish. The tiny amount of pasta on the plate was the only thing i ate. The chicken was dry and the sauce flavourless and watery.
My co-diner agreed with all my comments and although she preferrered her lamb cutlets to my dish she would have prefered them to ask how she would've liked them cooked and thought a sauce would have gone well with this dish.
We did not stay for dessert.

I will say that I feeling a little under the weather this particular evening and based on this I will reluctatly give them a second chance. Perhaps it was just me having an off night (they do happen after all), as most of the reviews praise them highly.

Firstly I am sorry that this diner did not enjoy her experience with us as it is always our intention to make each evening a pleasurable one.
To respond to the critisisms in turn, our entrance hall has been recarpeted and further work will be done at the end of the season. The bar area was refurbished at the begining of this year and is in a traditional theme so maybe not to everyones taste. We have a rolling program of refurbishment which to a large extent has to be carried out in the winter months.
Our staff always try to make guests welcome and the majority of our 'staff'' are family so they know the importance of this.
As for our menu we have a varied and extensive menu which uses good quality local produce in a good traditional style. If diners would like their food masked in heavy sauces or a nouvelle cuisine then perhaps we are not the establishment for them. Although I must add that the lamb cutlets are served with a light jus.
I believe that we epitomise a country inn which I accept is not to everyones taste and we will always endeavor to make everyones stay with us a pleasurable one.
