I'd been staying at the Rothwell House Hotel regularly for almost 12 years, but stopped three years ago when the prices went up and the standards went down (someone on trip advisor said at the time, "only stay in this hotel if there are no park benches available" - he was right). However, having read some of the more recent reviews, particularly that it's under new management (yet again), I booked a colleague and myself into the hotel for two nights (14 & 15 September). I am pleased to say that there has been a considerable improvement.
No longer do you need to cart your luggage to a bar full of less than sober individuals to book in, which is a major plus.
The bedrooms we had (10 and 11, both doubles, although I'd booked singles) were clean and tidy, although the shower/toilet in room 11 needs a bit of work. The toilet bowl is loose and the wallpaper is hanging off the walls, but Rome wasn't build in a day and the new owners are at least trying.
Breakfast was excellent, as was the meal we had in the hotel on the second night. Staff couldn't be faulted and the girl who cleaned the room even folded up my clothes.
On the down side, several of the taps in the bar had no barrels connected to them and the bar itself shut at 9.30 p.m., as does the actual lounge, so there's not even an option to sit somewhere (other than the reception area). This will need to change if they want business customers. The car park is woefully small, although there's not a lot the owner can do about it and, in any case, there's free parking in the main town carpark about 50m from the hotel.
I'd stay there again and happily recommend it to anyone else.
