“Wedding reception & party”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

Our wedding reception and evening party went without a hitch. We found that all the staff especially Steven (function manager) & Rita could not do enough for us all, anything & everything we asked for these two people delivered it.
Absolutely nothing was too much to ask for, the sit down meal was excellent as was the evening buffet. We would personally like to thank both Rita & Steven for there help throughout our wedding preperation, our day was fantastic and we really appreciate there efforts.

We cannot comment on the accomodation at the George Hotel, as we all stopped at the Royal hotel (sister hotel) 100 yards away.

“not fit for humans”

after travelling 5hrs we arrived at the hotel with friends, only to be told that there was only one room available when we had booked two, so our friends had to use the sister hotel,. After a bit of a disagreement with the receptionist over this were given our room key, room 23, .The corridor was badly lit properly to hide the flaking paint and dingy carpet, the room we were given was horrible, grubby greyish towels wallpaper hanging off walls ,stinking carpet, but the bathroom was the worst , the light was broken so only the shaving mirror light was working, no handle on door just a hole with the bar which used to hold the door knobs on, if you sat on the toilet you could see the bed through the hole, the sink was chipped in 4 places and there were stains from the tap drips,. the windows in bathroom wouldn't shut and were plane glass. we could here a constant loud high pinched bleeping noise coming from the smoke alarm .
I was so unimpressed that I went to reception and asked to be moved to a room that was fit to sleep in , the receptionist asked why ,when I told her the reasons stated above her reaction was " well i can take the battery out of the smoke alarm if you like" she also said they were refurbishing which I found out later off one of the staff was not the case at all and its what they say to customers as an excuse for the poor quality,
We decided to ring around to find another hotel and luckily we got into the premier inn for £5 cheaper per night, . I would not recommend this hotel (The George) to anyone it is appalling, If there was a minus rating it would be-3...

“Hotel from hell”

We have recently stayed at the George to attend a funeral which was held at the church opposite. Having booked on line through Hotel.com we were mistified to find they appeared to know nothing of our booking. The evening was spent on my laptop trying to prove to a foreign girl that we had paid at the time of booking. The info said there was a restaurant where we could have dinner that evening but they had no chef and so no meals. The room was horrible and dirty. The bed was a single base upon which someone had put a very old three quarter mattress whiuch sank in the middle. There were hairs in the bed! The room smelt and was very shabby. We had only one bedside cabinet, one chair and one mug and this was after booking a double room with breakfast. Incidently there was only one tub of milk too. On entering the bathroom it got worse for it reeked of smoke. The dust and dirty on the ceiling was unbelievable. The towels were hard and had stains on them and we certainly didn't feel it safe to use them. As if it couldn't get any worse we had to suffer a noisey party going on in the room above, well into the early hours. I looked for a phone to ring reception to ask them to investigate this awful noise but there was of course no phone in the room! I didn't sleep much at all firstly for the noise but also I didn't feel safe in the hotel. We were woken at shortly after six by skips being emptied outside and then the noise in creased as the delivery lorries started arriving at the construction site opposite. Breakfast, when we got it, was disgusting. It was as if it had been cooked for 7am and kept warm until we came down at 8.30am. I would never stay here again or at their other hotel up the street The Royal.

. The angles of the promotional photographs are incredible i.e. They bear no resemblence to the hotel environment, which is shabby. This hotel is the worst hotel i have every stayed in.Place is falling apart and is very dirty and for 60 pounds a night is a joke i would of excpected the t.v to work and sleep in a bed that is not broken. And that is after changing rooms. Our veiw from our room was dirty with old take away packs old windows and some birds shoes. it looked like we where staying outside the local tip!!!!
I left without eating breakfast and I would not stay again.THIS HOTEL NEEDS CLOSING DOWN FOR HEALTH AND SAFTEY REASONS.

“In desperate need of TLC, outdated and breakfast was awful”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

We stayed here with our toddler because we got last minute tickets to Rockingham and everywhere else was full. I was a bit worried when we phoned to ask directions and they weren't very helpful. We got there and it seemed a lovely building opposite the church, the bar seems very new and it looked like they were updating downstairs, it went downhill from there. We got to the room which smelt musty and unused and the bathroom was horrendous, broken vinyl floor tiles and the bathroom suite was ancient with the enamel coming off the sink and a rubber tube that fits on the taps if you wanted a shower. The window was broken and paint peeling off the frames, although we did have a lovely view of the church through the french window.
The beds were comfortable (had a double and single) and sheets were clean, although not matching and so we had a good nights sleep, however there was no way I would venture to use the bathroom, except to brush our teeth or use the loo, which wasn't overly appealing ( glad we had the little ones toilet seat ). At breakfast the bacon was greasy, the sausages were tinned and the toaster only toasted one side of the bread if you put it through twice. Some people who came down for breakfast later hadn't got a clean table to go to as there was obviously not enough tables and at one point I thought people would have to wait to get a table. Staff in general seemed OK and friendly enough but not sure if any of them knew what was going on
