Well, just had a look at the other reviews and wondered if we'd upset someone because we found this a very poor hotel and therefore so was our stay. We stayed at end of July on our way back from Essex to our home in Aberdeenshire. We were on our way home after a funeral which I promise you didn't affect our opinion! We are looking to relocate from Scotland, being originally from the South East and Richmond was looking like a contender and this was an opportunity to go and have a look. The location of the hotel on the square looks good and the photo of the hotel bedecked with hanging baskets was exactly as it was. Sadly outside the hotel is just a car park, we found the Market Place disappointing and the Saturday Market was even more disappointing, took all of 10 minutes to look at all the tat! Anyway, back to the hotel - Reception, dark and dull, with an otherwise occupied Receptionist. We made our way up the stairs, beautiful chandeliers and a hint of Georgian-ness, it all looked promising at this point. The room overlooked the Market Place and was a disappointment - looked like it needed a makeover, maybe more pictures, a vase of flowers - anything! The flat screen TV was wall mounted with a fetching thick black lead snaking along the wall. In the bathroom we had a shower holder but no shower!! The shelves in there were dirty too. My husband went to Reception to try to change room but what we were offered was at the back of the hotel, substantially smaller although much better appointed, with a view of a back wall. They looked like before and after decoratively.
For our evening meal we found a nice restaurant nearby. Breakfast which was included in my booking was possibly the worst I have had in an hotel, ever. Ordered and served to table it would have fitted on a slice of bread! Very skimpy. On checking out we realised that we were actually interrupting the Receptionist talking to a couple about a Wedding reception - so it didn't get any better. Parking is around the back. Anyway, could not recommend anything here and will not stay here again.
