“Might be nice in summer - freezing cold!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

My immediate impression of the hotel was very favourable. The Golden Lion is an olde-worldy hotel on the main street of Northallerton, right opposite the famous Betty's tea rooms. There is plenty of parking, both on the street outside and in the hotel car park behind the hotel. I was welcomed very professionally at reception and the open fires in the bar and lounge rooms looked very inviting.

My room (Swaledale) was towards the back of the building up numerous flights of stairs - not a problem for me, but might be a consideration for some as there is no lift. It was nicely furnished in a country cottage type style and very clean. I agree with some of the previous reviews in that some of the furniture and fittings were a bit dated and could probably do with an upgrade, but overall the room was fine. It did, however, have one major problem - it was freezing cold! The room was quite large and there was only one small radiator hidden under a decorative radiator cover, which looks nice but doesn't let any heat through!

The temperature didn't improve much when I went down to the bar (which is lovely) for a meal. Despite sitting right next to the open fire, the room temperature was on the chilly side and draughts were coming quite strongly through the window frames. Thankfully, my meal was piping hot and delicious and the bar staff were very friendly.

The following day, I was attending a full-day meeting in the Mowbray suite of the hotel. Again, the room was spacious and well laid-out, lunch and refreshments good and very helpful staff, but the room was freezing cold. The heating hadn't been put on until just before we arrived for the meeting and I think that two fan heaters for the large size of the room is simply inadequate. Hotel staff did bring in four additional mobile radiators, but this really didn't have any affect on the temperature inside and we all spent the day wearing our coats! Some attendees actually went home at lunchtime and returned with ski-wear to keep warm!

Admittedly, it was January and it was a "cold snap" - the outside temperature at 08.30am as shown by my car was -2. However, it wasn't unseasonably cold outside and I don't think that it is unreasonable to expect a hotel in the north of England to be able to keep the temperature inside comfortable.

It was a real shame that this temperature issue really spoiled my stay at the Golden Lion. i wouldn't dismiss it as a place to stay in future, but only in the summer!

“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

This is a very old hotel so the layout wont suit some guests. There is no lift and some steep stairs but that helps give it character. The public rooms downstairs have all been refurbished. It has a multitude of nooks and crannies where you can sit for a drink or to work or read. There are also at least 3 separate real fires to relax beside on cold nights.

The rooms are large with good bathrooms and clean if a little old fashioned. There's a decent TV with multiple channels. At the rear there's a huge free car park with easy access

You can eat in the bar or the restaurant or there are literally dozens of restaurants within about 10 minutes walk. THe menu in the Golden Lion (like all of Northallerton) is extensive and good but this isn't fine dining. Its good quality Yorkshire cooking in huge portions! When you consider the prices it is excellent value.

Again the staff make the place, They are kind, helpful and look after their guests

The biggest problem is internet coverage . Its great downstairs (and free) but many of the rooms have no internet at all. If this is essential ask in advance for a room with a signal

“Living on its reputation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

Beautiful old property with a good reputation which is soon going to be worthless unless some big improvements are made. The staff were very friendly and helpful, but the room was a big disappointment. The hotel bills itself as non-smoking, as indeed all public places are in England nowadays, but my corridor and indeed even the room smelt appallingly of smoke, to the degree that all my belongings contined to smell even after I had left. Even when taking a shower the shower curtain smelt of smoke. I asked reception about this and was simply told that 'there were some smokers in that part of the hotel'. This was not just the smell of smokers who were limiting their smoking to the outside of the hotel. In addition, the heating did not come on in the room until the evening, so my arrival and shower were of necessity a cold and unpleasant experience. I live in the Caribbean so I notice the cold very easily, so perhaps this would not have been as bad for other visitors. Wi-fi was supposed to be available, but my room could not receive a good enough signal so I had to go down to the bar to get online - hardly ideal in this day and age. Breakfast was good and plentiful, but this is a hotel I will not be revisiting on future trips to England

Room Tip: Ask how to avoid the smokers' wing!

“Terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

This place is an absolute joke, we stayed for a wedding this summer and being related to the happy couple we expected a fantastic stay. but sadly it was anything but.
The management of the hotel is completely lacking and the food poor, the service is by 15 year olds who sadly are being led by the blind.
The wedding was nice and the food average but my recommendation to everyone is do not stay in this hotel the rooms are awful and getting a reduction due to damp, wet smells and dirty rooms just don't happen

“Bit pricey for what it is perhaps”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

Stayed here for one night. Staff were all very friendy. The room was small but acceptable. Maybe a little dusty as felt a bit sniffly in the morning. I think £95 for one night B&B is a bit pricey for what it is. Breakfast was good, full english or other options available. Right on the high street s a handy location. All in all, a good hotel, but I think a little over priced.
