My immediate impression of the hotel was very favourable. The Golden Lion is an olde-worldy hotel on the main street of Northallerton, right opposite the famous Betty's tea rooms. There is plenty of parking, both on the street outside and in the hotel car park behind the hotel. I was welcomed very professionally at reception and the open fires in the bar and lounge rooms looked very inviting.
My room (Swaledale) was towards the back of the building up numerous flights of stairs - not a problem for me, but might be a consideration for some as there is no lift. It was nicely furnished in a country cottage type style and very clean. I agree with some of the previous reviews in that some of the furniture and fittings were a bit dated and could probably do with an upgrade, but overall the room was fine. It did, however, have one major problem - it was freezing cold! The room was quite large and there was only one small radiator hidden under a decorative radiator cover, which looks nice but doesn't let any heat through!
The temperature didn't improve much when I went down to the bar (which is lovely) for a meal. Despite sitting right next to the open fire, the room temperature was on the chilly side and draughts were coming quite strongly through the window frames. Thankfully, my meal was piping hot and delicious and the bar staff were very friendly.
The following day, I was attending a full-day meeting in the Mowbray suite of the hotel. Again, the room was spacious and well laid-out, lunch and refreshments good and very helpful staff, but the room was freezing cold. The heating hadn't been put on until just before we arrived for the meeting and I think that two fan heaters for the large size of the room is simply inadequate. Hotel staff did bring in four additional mobile radiators, but this really didn't have any affect on the temperature inside and we all spent the day wearing our coats! Some attendees actually went home at lunchtime and returned with ski-wear to keep warm!
Admittedly, it was January and it was a "cold snap" - the outside temperature at 08.30am as shown by my car was -2. However, it wasn't unseasonably cold outside and I don't think that it is unreasonable to expect a hotel in the north of England to be able to keep the temperature inside comfortable.
It was a real shame that this temperature issue really spoiled my stay at the Golden Lion. i wouldn't dismiss it as a place to stay in future, but only in the summer!
