“beautiful retreat with homerly atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We stayed here for the weekend and really enjoyed it. Friendly staff and great little touches like free to borrow DVDs . Very atmospheric building and decor. The bathrooms are a bit dated but very clean. We had a comfortable stay eating in the Hotel one night and going into the village another. The food was good and the staff helpful. The location was pretty and a great base for walking.
I would recommend this asa good place to stay.

“Nice location, not sure about the room though”

I booked over the phone at late notice and got a deal from the owner, for a conservatory room. I was expecting something bigger and better - to be honest, we thought the room was pretty poor. It was divided into a bedroom and a conservatory overlooking the dales - which was fantastic (the sunset was amazing). The problem was that the bedroom was tiny, the bathroom even more so. You cant have two people in the bathroom at the same time and the bath itself was extremely small - my wife is only five foot two and she struggled to relax in the bath. Anyway, the owners are really welcoming and friendly and our rate was for dinner bed and breakfast so we got into the restaurant for our meal. Your table is designated for your room and the service is really good and friendly. The bar and restaurant is really nice but we thought the food was average, which let it down a bit. We enjoyed our stay, but felt that we'd over paid for what we got - despite that, its a lovely location with a great team and very friendlily owners.

Thanks for your review. Stone House Hotel has been converted from an Edwardian gentleman's residence and is not a purpose built hotel Consequently some of our bedrooms are quite small. We are doing some refurbishment work this winter to try to maximise the space available both in the bedrooms and bathrooms. We do have larger bedrooms upstairs - the Four Poster rooms are the most spacious and the Suite is bigger still although im not sure i could offer you the same deal on that room! Pleased to hear that your overall impressions were good and hopefully we will see you back next season.

“Midweek break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

Made a return visit to the hotel as we were so impressed the first time. Service was great , the room was lovely and the food super.I'd had a massage at " The Ginger Tree " on our last trip and it was so good that I booked another one this time. It was brilliant. Unfortunately Kathy ( the therapist ) is relocating to Simonstone Hall Hotel as the Stone House is having some alterations done. All in all a superb midweek break.

Room Tip: The four poster room above the library might be a little noisy if there is a larger party

Thanks for your positive review and we hope to see you return next season. We are developing the Ginger Tree into a new ground-floor bedroom , but we do hope to build a new treatment suite sometime in the future - so we can offer a wider range of therapies - including spa treatments.

“Beautiful olde worlde hotel in the Dales”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

A lovely place in the middle of nowhere it seems, very friendly, and enjoyable. The first night we had a tiny room which was very difficult with the dogs, we could hardly move around and was surprised that they allocated or allowed such a room for dog owners. The next day they moved us to a conservatory room which was fine and lots of space.
Food was excellent but they do stop serving dinner pretty early, I recall last order were about 8.30pm.
We had booked the place for 2 reasons, primarily because it was dog friendly (and there were plenty of dogs of all shapes and sizes) and also because of the Spa. I tried several weeks in advance to book appointments at the Spa for the Saturday but was told there was a wedding and they would let me know nearer the time when they could fit us in that day. They never did so I called again the week before we were due to arrive and was told that after all they couldn't do Saturday but they could fit us in Monday 9am. I confirmed this booking by email so there would be no misunderstanding. We waited and waited on Monday morning but the therapist never turned up. The hotel owner advised that the Spa was separately run but he called her. I spoke to her and she denied that she knew about the bookings. On my return home I copied her with her confirmation and my emails, which were quite clear and specific and she then apologised. I did suggest that to the owner of the hotel that as it was advertised as a Spa hotel/Inn he did have some responsibility in all this.
So that part of it was very disappointing.

Room Tip: Garden/Conservatory rooms are a must if you have a dog

Many thanks for your review. The conservatory rooms are certainly the number one choice if you are bringing your dogs and we do try to accommodate guests in these rooms whenever possible.
With regard to The Ginger Tree (Spa) unfortunately we are not involved in the appointments and were unable to help with the mix-up. The Ginger Tree has now closed and we will be developing the rooms into a luxury ground-floor suite which should be available to book in the spring of 2012.
Hope to see you back next season.

“The atmosphere here is just right. Comfortable, friendly, and attention to detail without being pretentious.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

Three generations of our family stayed for a 3 night D,B and B break, and all had a relaxing and very enjoyable time. As others have mentioned, the atmosphere was great - genuinely friendly and helpful staff, plenty of cosy areas to sit with a book or glass of wine, and arriving back after a day out just as the log fires were being lit, made us feel like we were arriving home! In addition, we enjoyed the quality of meals, and the quiet location.

My parents ( in their 80's) had a ground floor conservatory room due to my fathers difficulty with stairs.Though the conservatory gave them a sitting area, the bedroom was disappointing as it was so cramped, and didn't live up to expectations. We had a standard double ( No 15) which, while small was comfortable, and we liked it. Our 18yr old daughter had the single room which she liked and described as 'cosy', and our 23yr old son had a small double which was fine for one person.

The food was very good, our only comment is that it would be a real asset to offer an a la carte menu, or a set price for two courses as an alternative to the four course meal. Only my husband consistently managed the cheese as well!

Room Tip: If space is important to you, opt for a more expensive room.

Many thanks for your very positive review. Delighted to hear that all your family had a an enjoyable stay. Our rooms do come in all shapes and sizes and the conservatory bedrooms are smaller than some of the rooms upstairs which is why we added the conservatory to give a seperate sitting area. We have been asked several times if we offer a lighter menu with less courses or an a la carte option - at the moment we have no plans to change from our table d'hote menu as we feel this still offers exceptional value for money and is a great way to showcase not only the talents of our chefs but also the wealth and quality of the ingredients on offer within the dales.
