“Excellent!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

The Cross House Lodge is an amazing venue, you relax the moment you step through the door.
Complimentary afternoon tea, very srumptious.
Our room was lovely and Molton Brown goodies was a nice surprise.
Food at The Star Inn was fantastic, all of the staff both in the Lodge and the Pub are very friendly and made us feel very welcome.
We would heartily recommend the accomodation and the restaurant to anyone.
In fact we have already booked our next visit!

“Disappointing accommodation”

Very poor standard of accommodation for the price, we stayed at Cross House Lodges room 8 as I don't want to ramble on I will make a list. Level of lighting in room and bathroom so poor it was difficult to apply make-up or style hair, handles fell of wardrobe, bathroom door stuck and only opened half way bathroom toiletries not replenished and poor choice, dusty cotton wool balls and Tampax. No foam bath for the bath, poor quality hospitality tray (contained in unhygienic basket) and a small amount of milk literally a table spoon in a smelly flask we had to ask for milk on both days as this was not replenished this bed very uncomfortable to get in and out of due to large wooden surround, overall room and bathroom were not as clean as they should have been. 1st nights evening meal was lovely we were seated in the new part of the restaurants near the kitchen and the service was also excellent however on the second night we were seated in the old part and left some of our meal and did not stay for dessert as there was awful smell of chimney smoke which completely put us off our food.Breakfast is a communal affair, again not consistent we ordered a Yorkshire breakfast both mornings 1st morning 2 rashers of bacon 2nd morning 1 rasher! we found the bread to be on the stale side and the jams and butters were in open pots which attracted flies! add to that the resident dog begging at the table. Even though the food was nice we would not make a return visit

“Thirty Three ecstatic guests”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

I took a party of 33 for Sunday Lunch. The whole of the afternoon was perfect from start to finish. We received a warm welcome for the Head Waiter, who immediately arranged for us to relax and have drinks in the bar. The bar was busy, with a lively and friendly atmosphere. I had a superb Black Sheep Ale, it’s obvious they keep their cellar in tip top condition.
We then walked through the garden and greeted by Chef/Patron Andrew Pern, who spent time with us showing us his new and most impressive vegetable garden.
We then made our way to the restaurant and again received by polite, attentive staff.
The meal was superb. Every course beautifully presented and served with panache. Every single dish a work of art and the flavours – wow!
We chose a very nice Sauvignon Blanc from the extensive wine list, and although our bottle was at the cheaper end, it was spot on.
Would we go again? Absolutely! Some of the members of the party have already booked to return, and we are going to repeat the party trip again.

After watching this programme on Channel 4 the other night it made me remember reading some bad reviews about The Star Inn...and I feel they are completely unfounded, and a little bit sniffy!

It's a fantastic place to stay. Great food, great hospitality, a great room (we stayed in Room 8), and I loved the fact there was an honesty bar in the snug.

I can't recommend The Star Inn enough.

Room Tip: Room 8 is large!

“Excellent food, accommodation disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

Our stay at the Star Inn was a wedding gift. We ate in the inn and had a fantastic meal, good service and lovely atmosphere. We stayed at the Cross Houses accommodation across the road and for £200 per night it was disappointing. The only toiletries in the bathroom were a shower cap; we had to go and ask for others at reception. Breakfast is at a beautiful large round table which is shared with all the other guests. This means you have to ask for milk, jam etc. to be passed to you and means that private conversation is just not possible! Our order of an omelette and porridge took over half an hour to arrive, albeit very tasty when it did. Lovely, lovely food and pub but stay in Helmsley and get a taxi!
