This was the first time we had stayed at The Royal but we were not disappointed.The bar/restaurant serves typical pub food but the menu is extensive and the food really good.
The rooms while not on the large side heve been recently refurbished and are clean and tidy and the bathroom is more than adequate.The staff were polite and helpfull. We arrived well before the check in time and merely wanted to make them aware that we were in town and would not return until late evening but although we had to wait a little while they arranged for us to check in at that time. We will definitely stay again.

I can sympathise with some of the earlier reviews - However the Royal has just been refurbished, both the rooms and the Bar. We stayed last week - the rooms are essentially the same size but there has been a nice upgrade to make them fit into the goodnight inns brand. The hallways have been re painted with new carpet. (not keen on the colour but it's freshened it up.) The rooms have had new upvc double glazed units in and this does make a real difference. All the rooms have been painted, and cleaned. The leather bed heads, new beds / linens and lighting does make a difference. The local art on the wall is a nice touch if you like local heritage (steel works :-) ) I was born here - I loved it. The bathrooms have been decorated but not replaced. The new flatscreen tv's have vastly improved choice of channels including sky, al jezeera etc. It has made a great improvement. You can sometimes find the reception empty as it isn't staffed 24/7 - just wonder through to the bar - they will ensure prompt service. The staff are great, always been 100% helpfull and friendly. The location is handy for a walk into town. The bar refurb looks good too. It's currently very good value and nice to see the investment going in .

The staff were so helpful and polite. Nothing was too much for them. The food was wonderful, the sausages and mash...yummy and the size of the pies...wow!!! The rooms were nice, maybe needing updating but clean and warm and cozy. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to all friends and family.

Well where do I start? On arrival I stood waiting at the reception for nearly 15 minutes as the staff were too busy serving all the 'punters' at the bar, when eventually I was checked into my room the lady was very rude and didn't make you feel welcome AT ALL.
My room was disgusting. The bed dipped, the sheets were RIPPED and like tracing paper, the carpets were filthy, the wall were stained and wallpaper was hanging off, the bathroom smelt awful.
I had my dinner in the Hotel and the food was probably the best thing about the entire stay however, not enough to make me ever return.
The staff were very rude and more concerned in their appearance and having a joke than they were in working. Definite 1 star from me!
