“Best Country Hotel in the North”

My wife and I have just returned from a stay at Stirk House celebrating our wedding anniversary. and what a brilliant stay we had. From the warm and friendly greeting from the reception staff who personally showed us to our room (we upgraded to a manor suite) to the fairwell chat with the owner the whole stay was a complete joy!
Upon arrival you are greeted by a warm fire in the reception area and an even warmer greeting from the staff. Our room in the main hotel was modern, well decorated and well appointed, with a seperate lounge area and a "to die for" bathroom.
Food at Stirk House is 5*
Having had a pleasant afternoon tea (part of the Groupon package) we settled down in the comfortable lounge next to the log fire to work up an appetite for dinner.
Dinner was truely excellent, the staff we helpful and attentive, we requested a cheese board as an alternative to a sweet and it was one of the best we have ever enjoyed.
Breakfast from freshly squeezed orange jouice, organic muesli to the local sausages was again superb.
But however good the food and hotel itself are, the stars of the show are the staff themselves, We have never experianced a hotel where everyone seems to take so much pleasure in being there to serve you. It would be unfair to single anyone out for special praise, but Jason the barman was excellent taking a pride in his knowledge of local beers and the fine selection of malts on offer in the bar.
We hope to return again in the future for a longer stay so that we can explore the extensive grounds and experiance the wildlife which is being actively encouraged by the owners.

Room Tip: We were in room 16

“Excellent service, excellent food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012 via mobile

We have just returned from an overnight stay at Stirk House. From the moment we entered reception to the point of leaving we were treated with excellent service. Afternoon tea is lovely, dinner exquisite and breakfast was presented in a very friendly and professional manner. Would definitely recommend.

“fantastic groupon deal 😄”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012 via mobile

managed to get a very good groupon deal for £100 dinner bed breakfast and afternoon tea. on booking the stay we were offered a £30 upgrade to a suite which we took. on arrival we received a warm welcome and were shown to our room (gisburn suite - room10). it had a spacious seperate lounge with tea coffee making facilities, seating area and large wall mounted plasma tv. the bedroom was also spacious with lovely views across the open countryside. the ensuite bathroom had shower and whirlpool bath which we loved. the hotel is clearly old and showing some signs of tiredness. however we felt this added to the character in many ways and certainly didnt see it as a negative. nonetheless the hotel is undergoing some refurbishment which can only be of benefit in the long term. we had afternoon tea in the bar area in front of a roaring open fire. this consisted of tea/coffee, small selection of finger sandwiches with a scone each and small piece of chocolate cake. the quality was very good and although on the small side it was part of a very good deal so happy with what we got. we used the leisure facilities next door. the gym looked fine but we didn't use it instead choosing to have a swim followed by steam room and then sauna. the place was showing some signs of age but was fine for a quick chill out and relax before dinner. dinner was superb both the choice and quality. certainly restaurant standard food rather than run of the mill hotel fare. breakfast the following morning was again first class with lots of choice and freshly cooked full english... mmmm. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed and FULL. the staff were brilliant, really pleasant, helpful and seemed to be happy in their work. we would certainly recommend stirk house to others especially if we can secure a similar great value deal. Try it you won't be disappointed.

“A fantastic hotel in a lovely location.”

The service at this hotel was faultless. From a warm reception, being showed to our rooms, great waiter/waitress service for afternoon tea, dinner and breakfast. The staff were very accomodating and made every effort to find anything that you needed.
Our room was in the lodge, a luxury to have down pillows and duvet. The pipework in the bathroom was a little noisy but not disturbing. The view out the window across the fields was stunning.
The fitness centre was small but enjoyable. It shut at 6pm on a weekend, so the swim was earlier in the evening that it might have been.
We couldn't have asked for a nicer break - but what topped it for my husband was the complimentary shortbread as we left. He's already checked out if there are family rooms so we can come back again soon.

Room Tip: The lodge rooms are simple but very nice. The rooms in the house, especially the suite rooms were a...
