We stayed at this hotel for 1 night for a birthday celebration. The rooms are clean and spacious, with all the facilities you would need for a short stay. The decor is slightly old fashioned but what does it matter? The bed was comfortable and the shower was amazing.
Our stay included breakfast which was a great selection of full English, continental and cereals. The food was good, but at breakfast the service was slightly slack - I queued for 15 minutes to get my hot breakfast as virtually the whole restaurant sat down at the same time. Not the fault of the staff that everybody came at once, but maybe a staggered booking system would be more effective. There we're no glasses for juice and the waitresses didn't seem to know where to find any as apparently there were none in the bars either! There was no milk near the tea/coffee - instead you had to push through the food queue to where the cereal was.
Dinner the night before however, was fantastic. We had a small function room and the service was outstanding. We had the £19 a head 3 course menu, and given the reasonable price the food was wonderful. A good selection of starters and desserts are ordered at the table, all of which looked delicious. For main course you go to the food stand to select your meal, and once chosen it is carried to your table for you. The waitresses were very attentive and made the evening go very smoothly.
The main bar is in the foyer of the hotel with plenty of seats. It remains open until 1.30am for residents. My only criticism is that guests from a Wedding in one of the function rooms filled up the residents bar rather than using the facilities in the room, and we're constantly in and out of the front doors for a smoke. Normally that would be fine, but given the snow that was heavily falling, the cold came in easily and the smokers actually remained inside the building meaning the bar quickly filled with smoke. Nothing was done by the bar staff or reception staff to stop this.
Overall this is a nice hotel with excellent food for an overnight stay. I would definitely stay there again overnight, and would visit just for lunch/dinner in the future as the food was really good. I do feel that more care needs to be taken to
ensure that large functions such as weddings do not infringe on the enjoyment of other guests stay though, as they seemed to have free reign in the hotel.
