“Basic, but good enough for an overnight stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

The Glenwood Hotel is an old-fashioned B&B which has grown across 4-5 properties into a much larger building, and as such has its own individual charm.
I found the staff to be very welcoming and even quite amusing at times, particularly on the front desk.
We stayed in a double room which was very basic and quite small, although as we were only staying for one night, was adequate, but did not give the most comfortable night's sleep - which was not helped by noise from the street.
Breakfast was filling, quick and tasty enough, and overall for the price we paid extremely good value for money.
Overall a worthwhile and cheap place for a short stay, but spend a bit more cash if you are planning on staying in Margate for a longer period.

“Horrendous”

Horrible, out of date, dirty, run down...

I feel sorry for the hotel and area in general, it is clearly suffering in the economic climate but there is no excuse for the state of this place.

The worst example of a seaside hotel.

“Brilliant hotel - shame about the location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2010

We stayed for 4 nights at The Glenwood and have only praise for the time we were there. In common with so many other hotels a bit like a rabbit warren but by no means the worst and once you found your room it was no problem or you could use the lift.We were welcomed by the owner with tea and coffee and told about the hotel and the facilities. We were made to feel welcome from the start. If we found any problems we were invited to tell them first so they could correct it rather than have any of us go away unhappy. A small problem with the tv was corrected the next day but a large screen tv was available in the lounge anyway. The room though basic was clean and comfortable with the usual tea/coffee tray and small tv. The shower was clean as was the toilet and sink. The bed was comfortable and clean with freshly laundered sheets. The food was excellent with a lot of choice. Breakfast consisted of a variety of cereals including porridge if requested, fresh fruit and fruit juices followed by a full English breakfast and finally with toast and marmalade (as much as you needed) tea or coffee. The evening meal was three course with fruit juice, soup of the day (again with lots of bread), pate or melon. This was followed by a proper cooked dinner turkey, pork, fish etc. depending on the night. Again it was well-cooked and tasty. After this it was a pudding which was ice-cream, a proper pudding (I love my puddings!) such as steamed syrup with custard or cheese and biscuits followed by tea or coffee. The bar was open at the same time so a drink could be enjoyed with dinner - which it was. The pleasant waiter staff were brilliant and never stopped during meal times making sure that we had everything and that we were happy. Our thanks to them. The entertainment although the usual bingo followed by a musical turn appealed to most of the guests who were elderly although being a little bit younger wasn't really to my taste but we're all different aren't we. To our surprise, clean towels were automatically provided halfway through our stay which was a good plus point when you have a shower every day. Overall, this hotel can be given a hearty recommendation and we would stay there again. It's just a shame about its location in a run-down suburb of Margate but the owner certainly does his best to make you forget that once you're there and with The Coach Holiday excursions this didn't seem too important. Recommended.
