“What a fine fellow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Stayed here overnight on the way to France, just the one night so only tried the evening meal and breakfast, food was excellent and the service superb, being on my own for a business trip it gets a bit lonely at times, so the reason I am writing this review is to say a special thank you to the staff, they made a special effort to make me feel at home and one young lad in particular a Mr White spent some time with me talking about their range of fine wines, some of which I tried.
If the effort these people put in to pleasing me, extends across the spectrum of staff, then this is a hotel worthy of another visit for a longer period.

“Exceeded my expectations from reviews on this site”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I stayed here purely because of its location, and having read many previous reviews nearly changed my mind but as they were so mixed decided it may be an older quirky hotel which some will like whereas others much prefer modern bed box type places. Very pleased I went with my instincts and enjoyed my stay.
It is an older hotel but that definitely doesn't detract from the experience. The only problem I had was it was far too hot and I couldn't turn the radiator down (room 423) and therefore despite it being a very cold -6 with wind blowing off the sea I had to sleep with window wide open, quite pleasant really!
The bed was comfy, everything (apart from radiator not turning down) worked well, towels were decent size, in fact just what I need for decent nights accommodation.
Only contact I had with staff was in the BR and they were most pleasant and helpful.
We had a very basic bar meal steak, not momentous but very eatable and good value.
I will be staying again, I usually stay up the road in holiday inn express which is very good but I like the sea views and if this standard is maintained, this hotel will become my one of choice when in this area.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

“Stress break not spar break”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Was given this hotel Spar break as a Christmas present very disapointed. The heating in our room did not work the bathroom radiator worked but went off at 9pm and never came back on. House keeping gave us a grotty electric fan heater! Curtain fabric torn, very shabby finish to room, dead flies in the light fittings, the room was very poorly cleaned, dirty carpet with dust you could write your name in. After complaining was offered another room but declined because we wanted to keep our sea view which was great, the only thing that was. Spar facilities disgraceful, the whole spar was cold including the pool,(too cold to use) jacuzi was not working. Asked on two seperate occasions to be shown the spar facilities but staff were unable to oblige.no extra dressing gowns available. Was told to wait in our room until time for our treatment. Was not shown relaxation area or given complimentary drink. Did not get health screening or questonaire as stated in the brochure. My partner had to leave his clothes on the floor during his treatment. We complained to the duty manager who did offer us a new room and said she would check the spar and get back to us. She did get back to us in the dinning room infront of all the other guests during our meal, Unbelievable! She could offer no resolution to the poor Spar experience and offered no solution or apology. The dinning room is no place to be dealing with complaints. Could not get out of this Hotel quick enough. As it was a gift a full complaint was made by the person who purchased the gift to Mercure and the co op with whom the holiday was booked. The reply was also very poor and full of excuses which failed to address the problems and experience we had. Feel very let down and disapointed would and could not recomend this hotel or any other Mecure hotel.

“Flagging by the Seaside”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

My partner and I booked a spa weekend with the hotel through an intermediary. We looked up the reviews here before we went, so were aware of the renovation work had been carried out last year, and were looking forward to modern facilities.
Well they weren't modern. We were placed in a double room with a seaside view and you couldnt throw a cat accross the living space. We requested an upgrade to a junior suite at out own expense, it overlooked the plant room and you still couldnt throw a cat across! In the end we settled for a generous double room with a view to the construction site behind the hotel.
The corridors are stale and hideously carpeted, and the stairs are creaky and lopsided-all we needed was for Basil Fawlty to come bundling down to the reception desk and it would be complete.
The pool and sauna were even more disastrous with paint peeling off the walls of the faux-Grecian decor, cracked ceilings, rusted metal grates in the shower area, and a faulty heating system that meant the jacuzzi bubbled cold water in the middle of December (which of course you werent told about when making your bookings, and for which there was no discount)
ON a more positive note, the spa treatments were gorgeous and we loved the warm stones where we could chill after a treatment. The town itself was lovely, and the hotel and spa staff were quite friendly and obliging in sorting out little things that made a big difference to our stay.

The hotel itself needs to modernise to the standard of the spa below, or continue to risk being a summer and ice-cream hotel.

Room Tip: Try the suite next to the Admirals on the 3rd floor.
