“A budget stay with home comforts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

This place is a market leader in what it does: it offers comfortable, clean accomodation for a very competitive price. You could not get better value for the money you pay.

We've stayed here several times, and not just because of the value - because of the convenient location, the homely feel and the welcome we've always received from Diana and Dave. That makes it a bit more than your average budget B&B.

If you pay cheap rates you can often expect a dirty experience. Not here. I'd say the expectations of some of the reviewers here are a little out of touch with what one realistically can get these days.

We'll be back!

“My Excellent Stay at Seward Nov 2011”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

I am amazed reading all these reviews as couldn't have stayed in a more friendly more cosy B and B right in the center of Ryde if I tried!!!!!
My room was cozy with clean everything :mugs/teaspoons/towels/basin etc and I had a really comfy clean bed with hangers in the wardrobe and a very quiet room: No 2 at the back of the house.
Breakfast was great - Either toast and cereal or full English- I had both and both was lovely and because my hours were tricky that week I asked about different times for breakfast every day and I was always accomodated.
Diana and Dave took care of me and made me feel at home. They also took interest in my stay and helped where they could with car parking advice and info on places to visit. Neither were gruff!!! and very much reminded me of my own mum and dad so I totally relaxed and would have no quarms about staying again. I had not one bad night sleep.
The shower and toilet facilities were fine for a b and b what you'd expect with both being walkable from the room and I the toilets were never unclean/smelly/without loo roll.
Therefore I am amazed SO many guests have had an unpleasant stay and I would definitely reccomend this b and b to anyone. Thanks Dave and Diana and Hope to see you next year
:-) Emma

Room Tip: I stayed in Room 2.

“I would never stay here again and advise no one else too.”

Our room was the 1st door on the left of the ground floor. It smelt and felt damp, the whole place could do with a refurbishment and clean. it was dirty even though the chamber maid had been in our room!! My husband and I slept in our clothes as it wasn't clean. The breakfast wasn't grilled it was fried and tasted awful, the plastic flowers on the table had cobwebs and dust that looked like it had been there for months!! Unfortunately we had no choice but to stay here as the island was fully booked due to the IOW festival. Would rather of spent the weekend in a tent!!! I don't like to write a bad review but feel it's not fair on other paying customers as I always go by tripadvisor, on this occasion I felt the reviews I read on seaward were very misleading!!!

Yet again, a problem which could have been resolved with a little communication. The breakfast is not fried, but grilled. The room could have been re-cleaned. The good thing about Trip Advisor is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We can't please everyone, and in this business, as has been pointed out by these reviews - you get what you pay for. We don't pretend to be something we're not. If you want five star treatment, you need to pay five-star prices.

“PLEASE PLEASE DONT BOTHER”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

I can honestly say that this is one of the worst guest houses i have ever stayed in ,and i have been stuck in Kuala Lumpur during a volcano erruption two years ago ,and was forced to stay in a few flea pits along the way. After arriving and being informed that breakfast was served between 8.30 untill 9 .00,which is laughable considering we are supposed to be on holiday !!,We climbed the stairs to the top with no offer of help with our suitcases ( myself and my 10 year old daughter ,are strong for girlies ).When opening the door to our room ,my heart sank,oh my goodness ,where do i start ? filthy carpets, filthy curtains, lampshade which you couldnt tell what colour its even meant to be it was so dirty. The bed was so old it had a mattress (the brown and orange kind from the 70s) that had more spings than Zebadee. The bathroom was a discace, the toilet gurgled and ommited unthinkable smells, the vanity unit with basin was chipped and, wish i didnt do it,but i opened the cupboard underneath OMG !!! ,The shelf above, fell off the wall when you put your toothbrush on it ,and belive me this is just the tip of the iceburg.... One morning we dared to go down for breakfast for 8.28 and were scolded like children,by the lady owner ,who i have to say is a very gruff lady ,which leads me to the reason why nobody speaks up to the problems they are encounting at the time.......YOU ARE UNAPPROACHABLE !!.Also since returning i have realised the these are not new faults to the rooms ,reading past reviews ,the problems and filth have not been rectified ,even in the quiet months when there is no excuse. In short i am supprised Seaward is still open ,in this day and age ,so please save your money and stay elswhere !!!!

Room Tip: please dont even bother

How very lucky you've obviously been with accommodation over the years. Breakfast can be served earlier if wished. We do not serve breakfast after 9am as we are both very busy people, with other things in our lives. We are always open to talking to guests, and the most I ever say if people are in the breakfast room when I arrive is 'Oh, you're up early today', or something similar. I have dealt with the general public all my life, and can say there wouldn't be any point running a Guest House if we were 'gruff and UNAPPROACHABLE!' We decorate on a rolling basis, and have paid out several thousand pounds for a new fire system, this month have had the outside of the house painted back and front, and renew linen, curtains, carpets on a rolling basis. We can't afford to refurbish the whole house at once...therefore there will always be at least one room, which looks more tired than we would like. It's always the same - lot of people leave telling us how much they've enjoyed their stay, and the moaners who fume and spit, (and pull the bed to bits to examine the mattress, for heaven's sake!) and write on sites like these. Thank heavens for the former, they restore our faith in human nature.

“Very cheap but price isn't everything”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

First of all, this review is from September 2009- a long time ago. I only recently discovered trip adviser but when I stayed here I made notes as I wasn't impressed with the place. When we first checked in I noticed that many of the posters advertising attractions in the hallway were out of date from previous years. Our room (family) on the top floor had dusty mugs for tea and coffee that we had to wash first and the bedding, whilst clean, was old and stained. The room was also by a noisy main road with traffic all the time and the mat by the washbasin was also stained and was one of those £1 offcuts from a carpet shop.. The washbasin also gurgled repeatedly throughout the night. The door to the room also didn't fit and had to be yanked very strongly. The outer guesthouse door was also very very difficult to open.

On our 5th day the public toilet on the 1st floor didn't have any toilet tissue although there were tiny flakes of toilet tissue on the carpet-not nice. There was also no hot running water in the basin this day. The lightswitch in here also had dirty fingerprints on it.

The twin shower cubicles had dirty fingerprints inside both and the mats in the shower room were gunged up with some white sticky substance. The mats were changed 6 days later! On our 7th and last day the left hand shower cubicle only had cold water.

It could be that it's a nice place to stay now and it is very cheap so is it right to complain?

However, we've been back to Ryde twice since and stayed at Trentholme which is just as cheap but clean, spotless and I would definitely recommend this establishment instead.

How sad that someone should keep notes from a trip two years ago....however, good to hear the Trentham has met your demanding standards!
Bedding is renewed on an ongoing basis, as are towels and mats.
Sadly, we have no jurisdiction over traffic on the road outside, but we do not hide the fact we are situated on a main road.
Toilet tissue is replaced on a daily basis, and each toilet has two rolls at all times. Sometimes guests take rolls to their room for whatever reason, but that can easily be resolved if someone comes to mention the deficiency to us. End of problem. Our chambermaid comes in once a day, so there will be times when fingerprints appear on surfaces. These will be removed when she next arrives.....obviously!
Showers are electric, and have instant hot water at all times, wash basins are also fully supplied with hot and cold water.
If people communicate any issues with us when they're here, we're happy to work together to resolve the issues. Complaining after the event is such a great waste of time - especially so after two years have elapsed!
