My partner and I stayed at the Ryde Catle Hotel in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
The trip was booked through a promotion offering cut price accomodation and breakfast for 2 nights.
The initial impression is one of a grand building, overlooking the sea with good parking, outdoor space, a pleasant reception, bar and restaurant. The impression however goes downhill once you climb the stairs to the first floor, stepping onto heavily threadbare carpets and creaky floors that are not so much character but a sign that the building has not been properly mainatained. This is also eveident on most of the windows where paint is flaking and mold becoming apparent.
The food in the Brasserie was good, quickly seved and the menu, as with the chain of Olde English Inns, was imaginative and nicely presented. The Brasserie staff were also very attentive and friendly. This was also the case at breakfast where the menu was good and the quality of the food good also.
The let down was the accomodation. The room was too small to be classed as a double, the general condition of the room was poor with dirt in the poorly equipped bathroom. The toilet appeared to have a leek, the roll holder was missing, the shower a trickle and the taps in need of attention. The bathroom also had a badly patched up window which also had flaking paint. The carpets in the room and hallway were worn, there was a lack of adequate sockets and space to operate the iron and the sheets were not changed during our 2 night stay. The general condition of the building seems to one of slight neglect with flaking paint, poor fittings and botch jobs abound, even in the Brasserie/Restaurant
Our room (Room 2) was at the back of the building with views over a flat roof to the rear or the fire escape to the side.
This could be a very nice location for a short stay in the Isle of Wight but it is in need of modernisation and some attention in order to complete with the many other tourism businesses in the area.
As this was a promotional trip, I would have expected a better room in order to prompt return visits but alas, the cheap rate was reflected in a vary substandard room. Very dissapointed.
Room Tip: Go for a room at the fron of the building for views but check everything is in working order before...
