“Good for those on a budget”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We normally stay in 5-star hotels twice a year for birthdays/anniversaries. However this year we are (like many others) on a bit of a budget and came across a deal at this hotel for a 4-poster room in main house with set menu dinner and full English breakfast for £129. There is also a facility for spa treatments at this hotel (although not what I would call a proper spa) and these were also reasonably priced.
There is however a vast difference between 4 star and 5 star - not just in price - and we really noticed! Although our room was a lovely size it had not been updated for perhaps 30 years (80s decor). It was all rather tired looking although perfectly adequate. There was no mini bar/complementary water (there is kettle etc) but luckily we brought our own drinks.
I had not brought a dressing gown, having been so spoilt in the past and assuming that these would be in the room. On contacting reception, they did bring these up for us but there were no slippers.
Whilst my husband went for his spa treatment, I had room service lunch in the room which was OK. He came back a little disappointed with his massage but he is pretty hard to please,,,the pressure has to be just right etc. I then went for my relaxing back treatment with Laura which was wonderful, I really enjoyed it. The spa is really just a couple of rooms next to the pool and there is no chill-out area as such and I didn't really fancy a swim given the arctic temperatures.
There is just the one restaurant at this hotel, and it is in a beautiful room with lots of period features. It was pleasantly busy which is good as we don't really like eating in a empty dining room! Included in our deal was the set menu at approx £27 which looked good value, but us being us, decided to order from the main a la carte. Both our starters were fantastic and we were really looking forward to our mains. It was a real shame as they were not in the same league as the starters. My husband opted for the steak which at £32 was the most expensive dish on the menu. He was not impressed with the quality of the meat or the taste generally, I had the vegetarian option which sounded nice on the menu but was just so tasteless after my lovely tasty starter. The desserts were good (lemon souffle).
All in all, one night away with 2 spa treatments cost us just over £300, still a tidy sum but a substantial saving on our usual breaks. However we have decided that we would rather have one expensive break per year rather that 2 cheaper ones! Once you have experienced complete luxury it is hard to enjoy anything less.

Room Tip: Ask if there are any recently updated rooms. If you prefer modern, the executive rooms may be better...

• Coffeecreme Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. As you rightly say there is a difference in both price and range of facility between 4 and 5 star. I am pleased however that you felt your stay with us was both enjoyable and represented good value for money. Chef and I are concerned that your husband did not enjoy his fillet steak, the meat is locally sourced from indigenous livestock breeds and is hung for a minimum of 28days, therefore should be of first class quality. I don’t believe you mentioned this at the time? which is a pity as it would have allowed Chef the opportunity of both replacing the steak and also assess its quality so that he could discuss it with our butcher. Having said that it is good to read that you found the other courses to be excellent.
Thank you for your balanced feedback, it is valuable to us in assessing our product and in identifying areas that would benefit from further attention.

“Daughters First Birthday Party”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We were looking for a special venue for our daughters 1st Birthday Party, our main criteria however after visiting several venue's turned out to be the staff and how flexible and understanding their approach was in relation to working with us. We understood that the venue's we were looking at were not your 'typical' party venues and were hoping that the venue's we visited understood this and would accommodate us accordingly.......how wrong we were with several of them!!

After our first meeting with Kristina it was clear she understood what we wanted, I could actually relax as she took us on a tour of the Harcourt Ballroom and Dorian Bar where our daughters birthday was to take place. The grounds were a beautiful backdrop to the room and the entrance with red carpet gave an extra special touch to our guests as they arrived. Kristina did not try to bend our wishes to suit Pendley Manor, she made Pendley Manor suit us!

Our guest list consisted of 110 adults and 40 Children, were as other venues had quoted foie gras, caviar extra, Kristina worked with her Chef to create a very cute and very kitch children's menu that they loved (including the adults!!) followed by a wonderful adults buffet. It was Kristina's keen ear and thoughtfulness that I loved, I knew she understood what we wanted and she was always on hand to discuss anything with me.

The tricky part of our daughters big day was all the entertainment we had booked and the fantasy play areas that needed to be built for the day - finding suitable space and working to make sure everything flowed. We had hired a party planner, but Hugo the events organiser for Pendley Manor was sublime, he knows the layout so well and I can not stress enough to anyone who reads this review and is planning to hold an event at Pendley Manor, please speak with and listen to Hugo he knows what he is talking about and his suggestions lead to a better more organised day!! I especially loved his little touches that created such talking points like the dinner table set up with high chairs around it for the very tiny members of the party, so cute and adorable!

Hugo's thoughtfulness showed no bounds as he was on hand through out the day making sure our guests were attended to and that my partner and I were always made aware of things whilst still enjoying ourselves (it was great to know our daughters gifts would be taken to our room for us!!)

The food was of an exceptional quality, i know I have touched on the children's menu that was created especially for our daughter, but the adults food was thoroughly enjoyable, our guests were very complimentary about the variety and freshness of the food, I think some even asked for the recipe for the lamb!!

In relation to the accommodation at Pendley Manor we had originally asked Kristina to put us near the ballroom, however Kristina placed us in one of their suites which was a lovely touch as in actual fact when you work out how to navigate yourself around the hotel the suites are not to far away. Our room was above the main reception overlooking the main entrance, the night before our daughters birthday you could hear the occasional guest coming and going but nothing to grumble about. I loved the 'feel' of the room and after reading some of the reviews I understand that some people feel the rooms need updating but what they state as 'tired' I refer to as cosy - ok the TV was a few years old but who goes away to watch TV!! This was the first time away from home for the night for our daughter and the cot provided proved most comfortable for her as she had a good night sleep albeit after falling asleep on our bed!!

Kristina added even more of a personal touch by placing my parents in the second bay widowed bedroom, our daughter loved waving to them, we did not ask for this, Kristina just thought on her feet and it gave us a wonderful start to the weekend.

Whilst at the hotel we opted for the Buffet breakfast, the food was fresh, plentiful with a good variety. The waiting staff were excellent and many stopped to speak with our little girl, which was such a lovely friendly thing to do.

Overall I would like to say that Pendley Manor is a Charming venue with the staff to match, everyone is friendly and willing to do that little bit extra to make sure their guests have a great stay. I can only guess how they felt about holding a child's first birthday as I know it was a new experience for not only us but them to!! All I can say is that Pendley Manor thrived at the challenge and proved what a family orientated venue they are.

Pendley manor was one of several lovely venues that we visited but they were the only one to have a genuine friendly professional approach, so much so that when my partner and i do eventually find the time to marry we will seriously be considering Pendley Manor.

Thank you again to everyone who made our daughters first birthday such a wonderful day

Mylittlebear: Thank you for your very kind comments, we are all thrilled to read that your daughter’s first birthday party was such a success and enjoyed by all.
I do appreciate your recognition of my colleagues, who I suspect enjoyed the party almost as much as your daughter!
We look forward to welcoming you back for your next celebration

“Very accommodation and lovely staff”

I stayed here for one night in November with my husband and two young children.

We used the swimming pool and jacuzzi for after work/school unwind. Although we did have to leave by 6pm because they don't allow children after this time, and children are not allowed in the jacuzzi at all much to their disappointment.

Our room was a very spacious traditionally decorated family room with a four poster and two single beds. All the things you would expect were there.

We had dinner in the Oak restaurant. This is where they excelled.
I had pre-requested a special menu for dietary reasons and this was accommodated effortlessly. The Maitre d was really attentive and any request of my children was too much trouble. The food was delicious.

We had room service breakfast and this was a very nice treat.

I highly recommend this hotel.

• Mummy-Bubble-Luton – Thanks for posting you review, I’m pleased that happy memories of your stay last November are still with you.

Glad to read that you found your accommodation satisfactory and particularly pleased that my colleagues in the restaurant and kitchen were able to meet your dietary needs, whilst delivering a delicious meal with attentive service.
I’m sorry that we are unable to allow young children in the spa bath – health and safety advice I’m afraid.
Thank you for your recommendation – it is appreciated.

“Thoroughly enjoyable stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We stayed at the Pendley Manor for one night, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the manor had free parking and free wifi. The staff was accessible, helpful, and friendly. We had the full afternoon tea and room service later, and we were very pleased with both. Be sure to see the peacocks roaming the grounds! The small town of Tring nearby is also worth a visit.
