“Very Good Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I made last minute booking for NYE and only afterwards saw what other people said about this hotel. Been quite concerned about going there but...

Only after arrival I realised that AA marked it with 3 starts and, considering this, it was very good hotel and overall stay.

It’s true that rooms are in urgent need of makeover. On the other hand there’s so few hotels in UK that don’t need anything to be done with them, that this should not be a reason to complain.
Four Poster Bed Suite I booked was spacious comfortable and decently cleaned. There was space to sit and relax, Jacuzzi bath was definitely a plus and room contained everything you need in a hotel room for one night. It’s true that choice of tv channels is poor (and tv set itself remembers Margaret Teacher probably) but we did not go there to watch telly.

Breakfast was very good. Nicely presented, definitely cooked and with good quality products on the plate. We did not have to wait for our order log either. Toast’s could have been hot when brought to our table though.

What this hotel is lacking in some areas is most definitely compensated by staff working there. We felt welcomed right from the start, recognised by name by receptionists during the stay, everybody extremely polite and friendly and all requests we had were met in timely manner. Atmosphere staff creates around their guest is rarely seen in other hotels.

Would not hesitate to call them again and book if in area.

“Complete mix of excellent to very poor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

My 2 night stay was exceptionally mixed!! My room was very small, rather shabby and the bathroom was miniscule with loo, handbasin and a shower. It was quite a walk from the reception, with 2 lots of steps, a walk outside, then through the restaurant and up a staircase. Breakfast was lovely! I was unable to get out of the carpark (no fault of the hotel, but parking of other guests). I was in a rush to work and the 2 members of staff on reception were outstanding in their help, to get me out quickly. However, on return later that evening, I went to reception to pay for my evening meal and to get an invoice for my stay. The girl on duty had a very poor customer attitude (first with the customer before me, then with me). It went from bad to dreadful, with me ending up very close to anger and/or tears (let me add that I love people and it is very very unusual for me to have any problem with hotel staff). The issue was not being able to show VAT (which I can reclaim) then I thought my rate had included breakfast, which it hadn't. I could write a lot more, but will just add that it was quite unbelievable how most of the staff were exceptionally good, yet one person on reception should be so clearly lacking in customer service (insufficient training and/or unsuitable personality to greet and help customers?). On the 2nd night, I ended up in another room, with a bath. Much larger and much nicer. But too many little things were not in order: lightbulb not working, shower which dripped constantly (I ended up wrapping it in a towel, to stop the noise) and the TV remote control did not work (so only 1 TV channel available). The bed was uncomfortable, with large, hard springs that you could feel through the mattress (in a twin room, I put a duvet between me and the mattress - which solved the problem, but not really what you would expect from a MacDonald hotel).

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room with a bath if you want one. "Outside" rooms are noisier, appare...

Stayed last night in a four poster room. Clean, tidy and spacious but in great need of a re vamp, very date. Bath leeked, taps were mouldy and did not match and jacuzzi bath squirt holes were rusty too! Room very cold. Staff lovely and service and food excellent. Not stayed at a macdonald before but don't think we will be staying again.

“Damp and Rat Droppings”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011
2
people found this review helpful

warm greeting from receptionist. first room was full of damp, second room had rat droppings in the cupboard (which actually contained a hot water tank and was not a wardrobe) and the third room (the honeymoon suite!!) was cold, damp and no hot water. decor is very dated - peeling wallpaper and scuffed paintwork throughout. food in the restaurant was excellent as was the customer service received from the receptionist. will never stay here again - not what i expected from a hotel chain that i have used previously. will be reporting the hotel to environmental health

“Disappointing apart from the staff!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

I had to stay in this hotel recently after a mistake with my booking at another hotel. I was only staying for one night, but if I had been staying for longer I would have cancelled the booking.

Firstly though I had a very warm welcome at Reception, but after that it went down hill. The room that I was give was very close to reception, which from a convenience point of view was good, however, it did mean that every noise from the reception was heard and every time the fire door opened and closed again this was heard in my room. The room itself was from an era that I thought had long gone. The ill-fitting green carpet was a little too stained for my liking, and the decor very dowdy. The bathroom needed attention, the shower was extremely week, to the point where you had to put your arms and legs into the path of the "drips" to get wet. Fortunately as the shower was so week, it meant that the there was no need to have a shower curtain that completely enclosed the bath. The wet seat of the toilet, which was at the end of the bath, was caused by my energetic washing of my hair!

When I visited, the restaurant was nearly empty, indeed for breakfast there was only me! My evening meal was quite ordinary and expensive, as was my breakfast. I think that £10 for an average English breakfast is quite strong, and although I would have been happy with a continental (and therefore assumed) a cheaper choice, was told that "breakfast is £10 whether it is continental or full English"! The decor in the restaurant involved peeling wallpaper, broken bits of mouldings, and grubby chairs.

The one saving grace in my stay were the exceptional staff. They were friendly, and extremely courteous, in fact I would go as far as saying that they deserved to be in a much higher class of establishment than this one.

I hope that this hotel is just due for a refurbishment and I caught it at the wrong time, because it could and should have been so much better.

Disappointing and a shame.
