We went for a murder mystery dinner and room. On arrival the room wasn't ready. We were directed to the bar with the promise it would be ready in 30 minutes. After 45 minutes I went back to reception who said it still wasn't ready. I complained that it was too expensive to sit in the bar and we were given one drink. Eventually got into room at 4.30. The bathroom light was flickering so badly we couldn't use it. I rang reception 3 times before it was fixed. By then we only had 15 minutes before dinner so no time for a shower. I asked to speak to a manager who was offhand. I have since emailed the hotel twice to complain but have never had a response. Don't go there

This is an excellent venue for a wedding. My son got married there on January 21, 2012. The staff really go out of their way to assist you with all your plans and are very friendly. A Master of Ceremonies is available to help guide your guests through your wedding activities. As you can expect, there was a little tension, but the wedding planner was so calm and organized and the hotel was beautiful so any tension just disappeared. We could not choose a red wine that we liked so were able to try nearly every type of red wine the hotel had available. They were very patient and we finally found the perfect red wine. We did not have any trouble with the white wine or the bubbly. The wedding was in one room which was set up perfectly and the reception was in a larger room. The wedding planner helped with the arrangement of the tables for the dinner. There was a brief cocktail break in the beautiful sitting area while the room was changed for the dancing. The bedrooms were very large and beautifully furnished. The view from any room was spectacular. Needless to say, the guests were very impressed with the hotel, the meals and the service. The rehearsal dinner on Friday for 20 was in a lovely room with the bar in the next room. The wedding breakfast was a buffet in yet another beautiful room. I would highly recommend having a wedding there or just spending a few relaxing days in this beautiful property.

Room Tip: I believe that every room is beautiful. If you are handicapped, it is a long way from the entrance...

“A bit overpriced for what it is”

Very nice looking house from the outside and the ground floor is lovely with huge common areas, interconnected lounges with fireplaces and a bar. Our room (203) was a bit tired and needed redecorating, with shreds hanging down from the curtains and no mini-bar/fridge. I have stayed in nicer rooms in cheaper hotels.

The breakfast buffet was excellent, with a wide range of hot food, cereals and fresh fruit salads and fruit juices. We had afternoon tea too, which was delicious but with only four finger sandwiches/person a bit meagre. Wifi was supposed to be available, but I had to sit down next to reception with my laptop for it to work.

The swimming pool is relatively small, but nice, and the sauna was good and clean. They are separate for men and women, but nobody minded us (boyfriend and me) sharing the womens' sauna together. Great games room with a snooker table, chess, backgammon etc.

The hotel was a bit busy with a wedding on each night and a murder mystery. The hotel grounds are very nice and we hiked around the area for hours each day in the snow.

We paid 70 pounds/night with a LivingSocial deal and I would not recommend paying more than that due to the poor condition of the bedrooms.

I regularly stay at down hall sometimes for 4 days at a time and I always find the staff very welcoming and the service to a high standard. Although its a large older hotel the place is always very clean and well kept. We have chosen this as our companies corporate venue.

“A stately home experience!”

My sister and I went to Down Hall Country House Hotel mainly because she was flying in from France and the hotel was not far from Stansted Airport. To be honest, we were a little put off by some reviews but the special offer for January was excellent so we decided to try it. We were so glad we did! It was like living in a stately home for a few days. There were so many lovely places to sit amidst grand furnishings and artefacts that were of real historical interest. Our bedroom was lovely, the food was superb and the staff were friendly, efficient and attentive. We enjoyed the pool and sauna and a walk in the extensive and well-kept grounds. I shall definitely go back with my husband!
