“Ignore negative reviews posted on this site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Please don't take notice of negative views that have already been posted regarding this hotel. We have just spent a great overnight stay with friends at this hotel. We were abit apprehensive about going after reading some of the reviews. We were welcomed by friendly staff, our rooms were both excellent very clean and warm, one was in the annex and the other above the reception area certainly no complaint about any noise either from the odd train passing by or noise from the pub. We spent the afternoon sitting by a lovely log fire, then had a swim although the pool is very small it was nice and clean with adequate facilities Our evening meal in the restaurant was first class, all produce freshly cooked and puddings to die for. The staff were attentive at all times.Breakfast again was excellent as well, we will definately return hopefully when the weather is warmer and we can walk and see more of the surrounding area.

Room Tip: we had room No1 and room 27 both excellent

“Satisfactory!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Used our groupon voucher last night, room fine clean and water hot. Staff friendly. Wouldn't advise eating in restaurant wasn't very special,we went to pub next door for a drink afterwards and the meals there looked lovely!
Good location but glad we had a voucher would have been disappointed if I'd paid full price!

Room Tip: Ask for a high room very creaky floors!

“noisy hotel room 15”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

This review mirrors the review by Caroline who stayed in room 15 the night after we left. We complained to the manager who said he was unaware of any problems which was a lie because when we came home and looked at the reviews someone had also complained in |December for the same reason and the same room. This is disgusting that they are still putting people in this room after we complained on the 26th January. Not a very good advertisement .we have contacted head office who thanked us for our comments but that was all they said. The reception was not manned and unable to contact anybody through there phone system.

Room Tip: dont have room 15

“superb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We had 2 nights b&b plus evening meal. The meals were wonderful, excellent steaks, and the breakfast was superb. We had our dag with us and had room 25. This was great as it had a door to let the dog out to the car park, plus it was quiet, clean, and the bed was like floating on a cloud. The staff were extremly pleasant and we had no hot water on arrival but was very quickly sort out. no noise, no creaks, no train noise, no noisy people next door as it is the swimming pool next to us. The star gazing was brill as it is so dark and the location lovely. No complaints at all, i will be back

“Not for those who want a decent night's sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We went on a Groupon deal and stayed Friday 27th January.

Arrival & check in fine. We were given room 15 which is right at the top of the hotel. On first inspection the room appeared fine, large, decent clean bathroom and all the amenities you would expect. However we could very clearly hear the sound of the TV and people talking from the room next door - the walls were paper thin. We could also heard every footstep as the floors were awfully creaky. We went down to dinner hoping this wasn't going to be an issue during the night ........

We wre going to have a drink in the hotel bar before dinner but when we went in there it felt very cold so we decided to go straight into dinner.

We ate in the hotel resteraunt. The food was excellent and had a good selection, service was also very good. I have to agree with another reviewer though that it didn't have a lot of atmosphere.

The trouble started when we retired for the night. We soon realised that the loo in our bathroom made a dreadfully loud noise when we flushed it which went on for a full minute or so, we decided that if we needed to use it during the night we had better not flush it otherwise we would wake everryone else up on our floor.

Then at about midnight this awful pulsating / vibrating noise started, I think it was also from the plumbing. It went on and on and on, I went out into the corridor and it was even lounder. After about half an hour of this we were driven to distraction. I phoned down to reception only to get the recorded message "reception is now shut, if it is an emergency press 1" I pressed 1 only to have the same message repeated again, and again, and again ad infinitum. It was obviously caught in some sort of loop. I dread to think what we would have done if someone had been taken ill. There was no way of contacting any member of staff, I'm not even sure if any staff remain in the hotel overnight?

Eventually at about 1:30am the noise stopped but after having to put up with it for 1 1/2 hours our nerves were in shreds.

After breakfast we asked to speak to the duty manager who said she was completely unaware of any noise issues with our room and apologied. Having seen other reviews on this site which point out noisy plumbing and thin walls this is rather hard to believe.
She was very nice and did agree to take the costs of our wine and coffees off our bill but in all honesty I would have preferred to pay the full price and had a decent nights sleep.

We were planning to do some sightseeing in the area on the Saturday but both felt so tired we went straight home which rather spoilt the whole point of having a weekend away.

So overall I would be very hesitant in either staying here again or in recommending it to friends. The hotel seems to have real problems with noise levels from plumbing / thin walls / creaky floorboards. Most hotel guests expect to get a decent nights sleeep for their money and this hotel needs to address this issue.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I am sorry to read that you were disturbed by the noisy plumbing during the night. Our Maintenance Manager is looking into this problem as a matter of urgency. The telephone Engineer has fixed the problem with regards to the telephone system as although this was working for external calls it was temporarily out of order for internal calls.
