The hotel itself was fine, beautiful setting and garden. The room was ok, although like the hotel felt slightly outdated.
However, the main problem with this hotel is the staff. We were staying in the hotel for a wedding just down the road, and were informed when we booked that we could check in at 11 as we were with the wedding group booking. So we turned up at just after 11.30 to find some of the rest of our party sitting outside. They told us we should stay outside until 12 as the receptionist was "having a break down" and they had been informed to wait outside until she had less to deal with (I might add here how quiet the hotel was - I would hate to see how she copes on genuinely busy days!). So, we waited patiently until 12, upon which we went inside to check in. The receptionist looked at us as if we were crazy when we asked to check in as check in was at 2 at the earliest. When we explained we were told this when we booked, she laughed smugly and said no we couldn't have been told this as there was no way this was true. Although it was apparent it was a memeber of their team's mistake, she seemed in no way ready to help us deal with the situation, informing us there simply wasn't a room for us and we'd have to wait until 2, which when you have to get ready for a wedding at 1.30 is certainly not what you want to hear. To cut a long story short, of course once she realised we weren't prepared to just wait until 2, she managed to find us a room, much to her contempt. But her manner throughout was extremely unhelpful bordering on plain rude.
This treatment wasn't just saved for us. Upon speaking to a couple later in the evening who had arrived at 2, they were told thir room still wasn't ready, forcing them to spend the whole afternoon in the garden and get changed in their car! Luckily it was ready when they finally got to check in at 11.30pm.
I also should add, this hostile treatment continued with the staff at breakfast. One waitress made no effort to conceal her contempt at having to get us some cutlery, with copious amounts of eye rolling and sighing at simply having to do her job.
Having said this, the night porter was very friendly and helpful, and when, upon checkout, we asked to speak to the manager about the fact we had been overcharged by about £30 for the room, she was polite and helpful and immediately refunded this for us.
Overall, incredibly disappointing, would definitely not stay here again. There is no way the receptionist should be working in any field involving customer service!
