My PA booked me into this hotel as I had an early meeting the following day just down the road. I gather there isn't much choice in the immediate area, which would explain how I (and it would seem, many others in the past from other reviews) , ended up here. After a long day and a flight from Manchester, I was ready for some room service, picking up email, and watching the Man Utd Champions League game.
Problems :
1. There is no restaurant and the receptionist (who looked from her uniform as if she worked in a nail salon!) suggested that the room services was 'limited' - so "why don't you go 3 doors down the road to the Harvester, or order some take away for delivery?" The limited room service menu offered looks as if it had been chosen on the basis of what someone who can't cook can put in a microwave or under a grill. 'Oven chips - £1.50 a bowl' for example. Nice.
I actually ended up driving to the local ASDA at 8 p.m. and buying a salad and some snacks.
2. They have wifi, but I couldn't raise anyone on reception to ask for the code (it's locked), so no email.
3. They don't have Sky Sports - only freeview channels - so commentary on Radio 5 only.
The hotel is effectively a large 1930s private house, bang on the A27, which has been extended and converted. It has had some cash spent on the reception area, but the staircase etc is poorly carpeted and decorated : the room I had was one of the old 'house' bedrooms, with a small bathrooom shoved in the corner. The 'headboard' was actually a kitchen 'pine' laminate worksurface, which had been screwed to the wall. Anaglypta (or 'blown vinyl' as I believe it's know these days), 1980s furniture and a wall mounted 19 inch TV/DVD combi.
If you are used to staying in good 'business' hotels - don't bother with this, it's awful by comparison. However, if you want a cheap and cheerful (£65 RO, Breakfast +£7.00) room for the night for a nearby wedding (for example) - it would be OK. It was clean, the shower was hot, although good old 'sandpaper' cheap and over laundered towels were provided unfortunately.
They are trying - but it needs a lot of money spent and its never going to be a Hilton. If you are on business and flying in - stay at the Premier Inn at Southampton Airport and either rent a car or a taxi to Fareham is about £29.00. A much nicer option than staying here.
